My contract clearly states I can't freelance. I've heard from other people that people have been fired for freelancing (even when they have informed the company). Why is it fair for your employer to dictate what you're worth (salary), and then also tell you what you can and can't do in your own time?
My situation, my full time job is a permanent job which is under the government. I am thankful for that. I still wanna make art commissions/ freelancing and getting paid because that is my passion since I was a kid. I love doing them apart from performing during full time job. The turn off is, my work from the permanent job are a huge work load and sometimes I need to bring the work home and always sleep late even during weekends. Hence, I don't have the time to freelance. Even if I do have time, I don't have the mood and guts because I have been tired from the day job the whole week and it repeats. So I will go hiatus from months and years on my art project I feel sad because I am getting older and wasting time.
I think no one should be signing any full-time contract if it tries to limit my freelance work, because I think everyone can decide how much work they can take to stay productive on a day job and on freelance works also. But I think it is one big problem with working full-time + freelance - the problem is that there is a very little bit of time left to learn something new, so I think the main thing is just to find a balance. And I suggest for everyone in creative industry - find a balance to stay happy in your personal life and in professional life also, otherwise it can lead you to burnout. Peace!
So true, burn out, like I can work on longer hours on my personal jobs and gigs, but when it comes to office work anything after 5 is just burnout for me, and that is because I dont get paid for extra hours, if I was paid for that i would not mind doing the extra hours.
hi can we work freelance while working in a job . when we sign the employment contract it states we can't work without written permission from the copy . so if one freelance should take permission from the employer or do it behind back . what do you suggest? what kind of risk can employeer comes to know anytime
Hey man! I just want to thank you so much! I was recently about to full dive in freelancing after my training as a designer in print & web. I was very very motivated and i am still but i now after your videos about freelance you gave me a good sense about that topic. Now i will apply for an agency to get experience. I am just 21 years old but when i learned something then its listening to experts!
That is a very good advice, nice way to saying that if some boss is not so happy with your decision. I think as far you don't steal clients from your boss, you are ready to start your freelance!
This is just what i need it! I'm working and trying to freelance after work, but how do you manage to do it? I came late home, i only have like 3 good hours before i have to go to bed and on weekends i only have sundays free. Since i use my saturday to recover from the week. I mean how do you dedicate the time and caring a client would need if i only show up during nights? What kind of work have you done when working freelance while pulling a fulltime job?
I would came up with one more perspective. I’m on full time right now and I’m totally love my team, product and company that I’m working in. But as a side income I do freelance. In future perspective I would rather do freelance of course. But I want to build best skill set of industry practices before I’ll switch to 100% freelance. Also if you are foreigner in USA full time job can give Green Card.

There os one mpre thing I would like to mention. From perspective of your boss, it can be limiting and unwanted for you to do freelancing. Maybe your boss invested in you in such way he don't want you to share the knowledge outside his company/agency, or doesn't want you as competitior. All this should be said in contract. But, if this is not the case, i fully support freelancing!

Thankyou for such a informative video. I'm working as a full time employee now and got a chance to work as freelancer i have a doubt. Actually according to company policy of my current employer, employee should not engage in any paid work without the specific agreement to the director. So, if i will accept the freelancing project and work on the same then, is it legal or illegal, please make me clear on this.
Hi Ran, There's another problem I'm facing where my company might be threatened by me doing design freelancing because I might steal some of their design clients. Since the work I do and freelance in is the same.
@@FluxAcademy Well Obviously, but for them its more about loosing my concentration on their projects. Or applying all my 'good' ideas my freelance career
What’s the point of working full time if you still need to freelance for more income? This happened to me, I end of leaving the company and working full time at a place that pays me double. Better work / personal time ratio.
justshady I would argue your statement. I’m on a full time right now. That gives me a great Health Insurance, stable income, stock options etc. But like Ran just told us in terms of network is really crucial. I grow my LinkedIn profile with a niche specialists. Other then that my 9-5 gives me an option to get a GreenCard. Job is not only $
It depends on what drives you, freelance on the side helps to build you up in weak areas, for me, I was crap at being a PM, client management, and accountants, I didn't learn theses from working full-tIme. Also over time, your drive changes so you will want to have freedom, flexibility, choice of clients and creative freedom. its good you are in a position of a well-paid job and flexibility but you just don't know without the time to develop yourself and career.

Yup I agree. I tried it, and all I remember is working. Even though it’s creative it’s still job on top of another job

Hey guys. Please be aware of your contract. Not all contracts allow to work on the side if you are employed 100%.

What shall those people do whose companies write that their employees can't do any partime job, transact business, etc in their rulebook?

Same!!!
