  • If you are like me and you're a natural light wedding photographer, you may not love using the Canon 600 EX-RT flashes. But they are so necessary! Sometimes all these buttons can look super confusing but I'm going to a simple setup guide for these flashes, only explaining the things you need to know to use them professionally at your next wedding.

    Wonderful video. I use these flashes for work too but was curious to see your setup but wanted to say you explained it really beautifully. I can’t stress enough how great the Canon RT system is compared to the mess of third party triggers I used to use. The biggest problem is something you mentioned in passing - as it’s so easy you can pretty much forget all the set up malarkey and just get on with shoot after shoot. Then if you nudge a button and mess up your settings you can suddenly find you’ve ended up in a backwater of the menu you’ve not visited before and it takes a bit of thought to work out what’s what. Not a big issue as the menu is relatively (by flash standards) intuitive, but its more a sign of how the plug and play simplicity can mean you don’t have to get that familiar learning the awkward parts of the system!

    Hey Katelyn! Let me start by saying THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of your wonderful education! You are such a good teacher and you explain things so concisely and clearly for us right brained creatives who need a little help with all the technical stuff! Thanks to your videos I have been using the two light setup and it's been working great, except for last night. My two flashes will be linked, working fine, and then randomly my off-camera flash will stop firing. If I turn off both the master and the slave they will reset for a few minutes but then inevitably the slave stops firing again. I know it's not a battery issue, I was using fully charged eneloop batteries. It happened last night during first dances and I was so frustrated. Me and my husband believe that it may have been a problem of frequency interference with the DJ's set-up. Have you ever had this happen before? If so, do you know of a solution? We have switched channels now and we're hoping this won't happen again, but any other solutions you can offer would be fantastic!

    • @kristieschram7741

      I’m having the same problems. The speed lights time out after about four or five minutes . And they do not reconnect by the test button. Only way I can get them to reconnect to turn everything off and then back on which defeats the purpose of having them. I hope there is a solution a check my settings, and turn off all of the sleep mode on the camera and swell as the speed of light and transmitter

    I so need help with the R6 and strobes. Canon doesn’t even know what to do. When I put my strob on to use as a trigger or a fill, it reduces the exposure simulation a lot in the viewfinder and it doesn’t always allow me to see enough due to the automation. Do you disable ESimulation? I like to use fill while shooting events and this is such a problem through the viewfinder. Even when i disable it, it still darkens in the viewfinder. How have you adapted from using your mark iv???? Please help lol

    I tested mine out while watching and it was a big help! Question: Do you keep both the head flash and 2nd one both on ETTL settings for receptions all the time? I couldn't tell from your video if had that setting on for each flash. I did see below that you keep it on 24 mm to get as much width as possible. Thank you!

      @KatelynJames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I keep everything on manual.

    • @waynosfotos
      @waynosfotos 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just got two canon flashes and seems to work well on ETTL . The only thing I can't work out is for fill, i.e. sunny day but the subject is in the shadow. I then put on my ND32 on the lens (so to use a fast aperture in bright sunlight without going into high speed snyc) and then turn the master flash off. I then expose for the background or sky. I then turn the flash back on with ETTL on both flashes. This works well as a fill but i am sure there must be a easier why to do it 🤔. If you don't turn the flash off you can't manually expose the camera.

      If it does not have the RT in the name you can't connect by radio. You can use optical but. Unfortunately it doesn't work in bright sun light. Also point the red flashing sensor at the master flash to ensure a trigger.
      To get to this setting press the link button till you see a lightning bolt in the top right hand corner. It will then trigger your other flash optically. Remember it must be line of sight for it to work.

    OMG this video could not have come at a better time! I just bought two brand new canon 600 ex-rt ll! However, the past two weddings they have randomly NOT been firing! I use them with 2 5d mark ivs and have been having an issue on both cameras with both flashes. And I carry brand new batteries with me, and went 3 new sets within 15 minutes and had the same issue. I did notice one time when I went to switch the batteries they did feel warm to the touch. Have you ever had any issue like this before? Do you know how to trouble shoot this? I have three of the v1 models and noticed from this video that the mark 2 seems to have more clear and self-explanatory menus (for example, the menu for the different linking options seemed more straightforward on the newer ones). Everything in this video applies perfectly to the mark ones so buying a handful of used ones is an option if you’re a bit put off by the high price of the canon flashes. One thought, I don’t do weddings but have done headshots using the v1 600 RTs (when studio lights isn;t practical) and I have had some issues when taking lots of shots and working very fast when the recycle time catches me out and things don’t fire. No big deal for portraits to lose the odd frame but for a wedding I can see why that extra peace of mind might be essential!

      Small flashes like this aren't powerful enough to keep up with 12FPS shooting. The batteries just can't cycle fast enough to keep up with that much output. If you need to shoot that quickly with flash you may want to look into some studio strobes!

    I use strobes usually 4-6 and slave flash everything..... I hide the strobes behind plants and anywhere they fit and I put diffuser umbrellas on all of them and jack them up sometimes as high as 12-15 feet all pointing straight up ..... when I shoot light is bouncing everywhere and the people seem to not care, or better said they get used to the blast of light.....

    What power is the master flash putting out and how is that adjusted if needed? What if you want the master to be on a lower power than the slaves? You explain well how to adjust the power of each slave and even how to shut the flash of the master off... Thank you for that.
