Often when people make tutorials they are either unhelpful, contain way too much "personal" dialogue, or contain information but are shot horribly. This is literally one of the best tutorial videos I have came across. Way to go!!
Gary , I love you Man !!! Just wanted to show you some appreciation.I am someone who has a difficult time learning technical stuff from reading textbooks or instructional manuals. But I actually learned about the 600EX-RT and the 430 EXII and how to use them from watching your videos. That I am totally excited about. Thanks Man !!!!!
Barbara - yes absolutely. The 600ex-Rt has built-in infrared slave mode. If you have a Canon Mark III 5D, you have the ability to trigger via radio without the transmitter. I have a video about this - just do a search in my channel for 600ex-rt.
one of the best videos out there on the 600EX RT- covered all the functions- i went form shooting HDR real estate on my camera to using flashes and now have 3 600EX RT's and the E3 transmitter and this video made it so much easier to understand all the concepts!! THANKS GARY!!! by the way- love your diffusers!!!
You rock! I have owned 5 of your Fong Domes and they have saved my life on several thousand shoots over the last 10 years! Thank you so much for these videos too. :)
do you have a 600 flash? You would use the popup flash on the 7D to trigger your remote Canon - ex flash, and if you were shooting outdoors, have the flash very close to your subject (as close as you can) and shoot on high speed sync. All of this instruction is on this channel in the HSS or off-camera flash playlists.
I should've done that when I had the STE3, but I got rid of it. Using a 580exII requires a hybrid system, and this is really tricky. When I get one, I'll do a video.
High speed sync requires that you use a snoot and have the subject pretty near to the flash if you are going to take it all the way up to 1/8000 of a sec. I have a ton of videos teaching this on my off-camera flash channel
I thought I know my Canon 600EX-RT but a learned more cool and useful functions and configurations from your awesome and very informative tutorial. Thanks Gary for this great video tutorial.
"This covers the universe of the entire world." You said it! Awesome tutorial, far more than I'll ever be using mine for, I suspect. Thanks a lot for helping me understand my flash unit! :)
Merrick - you cannot trip the hybrid system reliably. I actually tried this in Toronto during a demonstration after I bought my 600ex/rt, and it wouldn't work. The Canon CPS reps were there, and they concluded that it was radio or IR, but not both.
Great video, I just bought two the 600EX RT and love them already. I'm impressed with your video(s) as I've watched a number of them just to refresh some of the stuff that this old photographer has forgotten. I'm from the "good ole days of film" that's a bit of an oxymoron because film was nothing compared to what we have today. Great work Gary keep it coming.
Hi FilmstudioX - I have a video on this. The 600ex-rt has a great menu system which makes disabling the hot shoe flash from contributing to the exposure. This is one of the great features of the 600
Thank you for this video, made my new speed light and radio transmitter easy to understand. Much easier than 2 owner's manuals. The speed light did show "TTL" instead of ETTL for a while and wouldn't expose right, wouldn't go to ETTL...then eventually went back to ETTL. Not sure if I bumped something or had funky setting. Yes I am brand new at this.
Thanks Gary, that was a real informative tutorial. The 660ex-rt is a lot more involved than I would have imagined. It helps to understand why the system is so expensive. I guess it's another example of getting what you pay for. jim.
Hi Gary, thanks for this great and informative video! Im having great success with this and your lightsphere kit! My Strobe photography has never looked so good!
I love this flash, There are so much more to this flash, haven't even covered External Flash ETTL mode, External Flash Manual Mode etc. Just barely scratched the surface.
Hello Gary, Just wandering with the zoom on a canon 70d. If i have say a 50mm lens it shows as zoom 50 but due to the crop sensor it is more like an 80mm lens with the 1.6 crop factor.
Hi Gary, thanks for doing this great tutorial! Ive got your lightspere Collapsable kit & loving it! It has rejuvenated my interest in flash/strobe photography! Thank You!
Thanks for your reply. Yes it is, its shown being as simple as pressing the link button 3/4 times. Mine only switches, to master radio, slave radio then ETTL and so on, am thinking the flash optical function may be at fault
This is so helpful thanks so much Gary! I have been using my two flashes with the trigger for a while now and just basically following my nose but not getting the full functionality out of it. Very helpful!
The 430ex has a guide number of 43, whereas the 600 has a guide number of 60. So yes it is quite a bit more powerful. If you are shooting at ISO800 indoors however, the 430ex should have plenty of power, even diffused.
I'm having trouble getting continuous flash as the recycle time is very long... My flash has only been used a handful of times. Is there a setting that will help with this? I think I have tried everything.
If FEC is a no-no, how do you correct the amount of flash when the E-TTL metering selects too much or too little power? I find that using FEC almost always allows me to account for that.
Hello Gary I have the 600ex-rt flash, camera is a canon 6D. I am trying to use my 600ex-rt as a slave just to fire of the light from my Bowens flash unit. I just want to use it a hair light, can I do that if so help please.
Hi! What mode do I have to use if my master flash is off camera? Is it possible to trigger via radio from my camera to my master flash (I have a canon T5i) and not by using the red photosensitive cell on the flash triggered by my camera flash?
4:40 Gary, Where does the zoom set it's self when pointed up? And roughly what would you suggest (manual zoom?) when shooting into say 30" umbrellas. Thanks.
Thanks for answering!! Well.. I looked for the video twice, but I can't find it. I have the 5D mark III. You mean I don't need to buy a radio trigger? I' m so confused right now. How does the Mark III send radio signal to the Flash? And if I have to buy a transmitter, why does the Flash have a radio receptor inside? Can't understand it. I just want to set 1 flash out of the camera with umbrella... to learn.
do you have a tutorial 600 ex rt , Canon ST-E3-RT, and 580 ex II demo. i want to know how ti communicates. i know 580 uses ir to communicate. i want to know it's limitations and adv.
Gary, I need your help on camera remote trigger shooting. How do you turn off the ATG AF Assist Beam (blinking) on the flash that acted remote? 600EX-RT (Master radio ETTL II) on ten ATG Canon EOS-1D Cr. 600EX-RT (Slave radio- use as Remote Camera Trigger), I am holding this flash. We also have the ATG Phantom Underwater housing modified for camera & flash. That red blinking light will not be safe when Jaw and his friends are around.
im going to be getting the 600ex-rt speedlite and then getting a Lightsphere Collapsible Pro Kit will the 600ex-rt work with it i have the 580ex ll, i just want to know if it will work for it , let me know as soon as you can thanks
Great Tutorial on the 600Ex-RT. It help me to decide to purchase one. I would like to see it in action off camera using the ST E3 RT. If you have the Time. Thanks
Hello. Im a beginner, and i just want to know if there is a way to shot with 600ex-RT out of camera ( + umbrella..). without buying the 400u$d canons radio transmitter. Thanks
The ETTL does not work great in low light conditions with stage lighting - I have actually tried using the ISO to boost the camera exposure and this seems to help but I've found moving down the stop also helps.
Hi Gary, i am going mental with my 600ex-rt. I can flick through the radio wireless no problem, however when i am pressing the link there is only the radio option. I cant seem to get the optical option, either on flash on in camera, its driving me crazy! any ideas? thank you
Help ! I run this flash on a 5D mark III With the 17-40 f4 L Lens. The flash in TTL mode but the zoom doesn’t change on the flash, even if I zoom at 40mm with the lens. What do you think ? Thanks, great video !!
Question+ I have this flash but when I try to set the HSS in ETTL Mode it won't apply. Menu 4 Sync, no dice. This is when I have it being triggered by an X1-C receiver unit, set to Master via the X1-C transmitter and fitted to an EOS 5DSr. I have all the Chanels and groups set as needed and the Flash controls on the camera menu are good. I'm just stumped...
Honestly, we've never used the X1 controller, so we're not sure if that is interfering. That said, HSS is a function only made possible by TTL metering, so if you're camera is firing and the flash is keeping up, the function would seem to be working despite the display. Is that the case?
Two questions, please reply if you know the answers: 1. How do you set 600EX-RT or 600EX-RT into radio Slave "Ext. A" mode? 2. How do you set 600EX II-RT in a wireless remote camera trigger when "Remote release terminal" is missing? Those questions can not be found on the internet or manual.
Hi Gary, I have to shoot a wedding this weekend in a church with low or dim lighting, what setting should I shoot in? I'll be using a Canon 7D and Canon 50D.
Good Day Gary. I have 2 YN600ex-rt, 1canon 580 ex ii and a YN e3 rt (Transmitter), is it possible to use the optical on the 580 and the RT on the 600 at the same time using the YN e3 rt transmitter?
Hi Gary, I just want to know that is it possible to use two different makes of Speedlight's at the same time when use of -camera flash? As I have YN568exII as well as canon 600ex-RT as sometime I want to use both at the same time. How do I set it up..... Please let me know... Thanks
I'd like to know what ISO and F stop do in any speed light? What's their functions. BTW, thank you! I have learned a lot from your tutorials, they are very informative and easy to understand. Keep up the good work Gary!
Don't know if you ever got the answer for this but essentially the only two components of the exposure triangle that affect the output of the flash are Aperture and ISO. Both either increase or decrease how much light your Speedlite puts out. Your shutter speed only affects ambient light and has no bearing on your Speedlite output.
***** Thanks Gary - I'm still not using this flash properly - ETTL never works the way I want it to and I always end up dialing up the ISO or stepping it down on the flash to try and capture more of the ambient light.
nice tutorial,, my canon 5D Mk2 is attached to 600EX without the RT at 01:09 i saw there is 24mm, how do you set it? My display shows only ETTL ! WP. Please advice, thank you cheers from Brunei
Great video Gary I have 2 speed lutes 600 EX rt. I just got the transmitter ste 3. Do u have a video on how to use the transmitter ste 3 as a master to trigger the speedlites slacked ??
Sorry if someone else already asked this but since this has a radio receiver/transmitter built into it, does that mean I can get away with using one pocket wizard for off camera flash? Also, I noticed a lack of a power meter. Battery life improved over 580 ex II?
Hey Gary, love your stuff. I have a question. I have these flashes and the transmitter. I can connect the flashes to the transmitter and fire them with the test button, but, when I put the transmitter on my camera it wont fire the flashes. Can you give me some info on why this happens? thanks
i can get my 600ex to trigger off my 430exII a I'm doing something wrong? it was doing it in the beginning but once i shut the 600ex flash off to use a remote it wont set off my 430ex
Thanks Gary - I'm just beginning to look at the complex features that are available on these flashes - it will definitely take awhile to master. I have a 580EX (not II) - will the 680 work in sync with my model (I am thinking of purchasing the 600 to start using synchronized multiple flashes)?
Often when people make tutorials they are either unhelpful, contain way too much "personal" dialogue, or contain information but are shot horribly. This is literally one of the best tutorial videos I have came across. Way to go!!
This is how tutorials should be 👏👏👏
I’m returning to photography after a long break and had forgotten everything. This was perfect 👌
Your video is the best and simplest explanation of how to set up a speedlight and transmitter so far, for CANON and YOUNGNUO. Thank you!
Gary , I love you Man !!! Just wanted to show you some appreciation.I am someone who has a difficult time learning technical stuff from reading textbooks or instructional manuals. this is way better than reading the manual - You Rock Gary!
I had to sift through several terrible tutorials to get to yours. Your was worth the wait!!! Thank you!

This was an amazing tutorial. Extremely easy to follow and the “hierarchical” bit had me in tears. Thank you!

yes Jonathan - just do a google search for a video I posted on mounting the LSC to a 600ex
"This covers the universe of the entire world." You said it! Awesome tutorial, far more than I'll ever be using mine for, I suspect. Thanks a lot for helping me understand my flash unit! :)

At 11:14, you edit out how you got the unit to display a, b, and c on separate lines.
How do you do it?
Hi there. You can always purchase on my e-store, we have the full inventory and we ship same day :)
Hi FilmstudioX - I have a video on this. The 600ex-rt has a great menu system which makes disabling the hot shoe flash from contributing to the exposure. This is one of the great features of the 600
You made a tough subject easy....Superb job Gary!
Very simple and straight forward tutorial ..... thanks Mr. Gray
glad to hear! I'm with you on the non-manual reading.
Thank you for this video, made my new speed light and radio transmitter easy to understand. Much easier than 2 owner's manuals. Phottix does have a Sony dedicated system, and I use it all the time.
Hi Gary, thanks for this great and informative video! Im having great success with this and your lightsphere kit! My Strobe photography has never looked so good!
I love this flash, There are so much more to this flash, haven't even covered External Flash ETTL mode, External Flash Manual Mode etc. Just barely scratched the surface.
yes, use the infrared version
Gary,. Simplified a complex topics. Great! Love to watch other video tutorials.
Mike, I don't know about the 580 non exII. I'm sure that can be found on google.
Hi Gary, I'm a big fan. Thanks for your great tutorials, they are very helpful.
This should be in the video. I don't know how far into the video I explain it, but it's the part where you disable the "lightning bolt" icon.
Hello Gary, Just wandering with the zoom on a canon 70d. If i have say a 50mm lens it shows as zoom 50 but due to the crop sensor it is more like an 80mm lens with the 1.6 crop factor.
Definitely best video on youtube about this flash.
Hi Gary, thanks for doing this great tutorial! Ive got your lightspere Collapsable kit & loving it! It has rejuvenated my interest in flash/strobe photography! Thank You!
Great Video! How can I get the Triger Mode switch back to changing the mode. It seems to be going into radio signals.
The STE3 is exactly the same menu system as the 600ex-rt in master mode. Super simple.
Outstanding. Simple, clear and logical. Thank you for this excellent video.
I purchased one today and this was very helpful!!! Great video! Thanks!
Thanks for your reply. Yes it is, its shown being as simple as pressing the link button 3/4 times. Mine only switches, to master radio, slave radio then ETTL and so on, am thinking the flash optical function may be at fault
very helpful and concise information. Thank you.
This is so helpful thanks so much Gary! I have been using my two flashes with the trigger for a while now and just basically following my nose but not getting the full functionality out of it. Very helpful!
This was great. I just bought a Canon Speedlite and I'm trying to figure out how to use it.

Thank you for that wonderful tutorial. I was having trouble understanding the manual and you made it crystal clear!
I'm having trouble getting continuous flash as the recycle time is very long... My flash has only been used a handful of times. Is there a setting that will help with this? I think I have tried everything.
This is fantastic! I just rented this light and this was very helpful.
If you're in ETTL, and you want to bounce flash on the wall to your left, does it accurately know the right amount light?
Its still going to determine the amount of light the lens sees -- bounced off the wall, ceiling, etc. .
If FEC is a no-no, how do you correct the amount of flash when the E-TTL metering selects too much or too little power? I find that using FEC almost always allows me to account for that.
This is great guide! Easy to understand.
Hello Gary
I have the 600ex-rt flash, camera is a canon 6D.
I am trying to use my 600ex-rt as a slave just to fire of the light from my Bowens flash unit.
I just want to use it a hair light, can I do that if so help please.
Are thete any other radio systems that it works with, or can you only use it with other 600ex units?
Hi! What mode do I have to use if my master flash is off camera? Is it possible to trigger via radio from my camera to my master flash (I have a canon T5i) and not by using the red photosensitive cell on the flash triggered by my camera flash?
sure does!
Is it possible to change flash power in 600ex-rt while in Master mode independently to its Slaves?
Gary or anyone, how do you adjust to shoot wireless radio in EXT.A & EXT.M?
4:40 Gary,
Where does the zoom set it's self when pointed up?
And roughly what would you suggest (manual zoom?) when shooting into say 30" umbrellas.
Thanks.
Thanks for answering!! Well.. I looked for the video twice, but I can't find it. I have the 5D mark III. You mean I don't need to buy a radio trigger? I' m so confused right now. Sooo well explained Gary!!
Thanks Garry, you've helped me understand my flash a lot better :)
thanks for this video gary its so helpful and a brilliant demonstration
do you have a tutorial 600 ex rt , Canon ST-E3-RT, and 580 ex II demo. i want to know how ti communicates. i know 580 uses ir to communicate. i want to know it's limitations and adv.
Gary, I need your help on camera remote trigger shooting.

Great info and love all your products through the years.
Thanks
Hai sir , can we play Master and slave in Manual mode. This video shows ETTL M&S mode??
The ETTL does not work great in low light conditions with stage lighting - I have actually tried using the ISO to boost the camera exposure and this seems to help but I've found moving down the stop also helps.
I cant use ETTL to save my life. It is worthless to me.
Hi Gary, i am going mental with my 600ex-rt. I can flick through the radio wireless no problem, however when i am pressing the link there is only the radio option. I cant seem to get the optical option, either on flash on in camera, its driving me crazy! any ideas? thank you
Thanks so much, helped a lot!
HI please let me know which is best setting for indoor room :)
I want to have the flash on Manual and Slave (radio transmission, not optical) How do I do this? Thanks anyone for your help!
camera ,still using mark3 or mark 4 which one good
Help !
I run this flash on a 5D mark III
With the 17-40 f4 L Lens.
The flash in TTL mode but the zoom doesn’t change on the flash, even if I zoom at 40mm with the lens.
What do you think ?
Thanks, great video !!
Go into your camera's flash menu or flash's menu on zoom

Hey Gary. Does the Powersnoot (the non collapsible) fit on the 600ex rt head? Thanks!
Can u use it as a master for any flash or only canon flashes? Like if I had a godox flash would the radio still trigger the godox???
Compatible with ATG, Canon, Jinbei, Orlit, Rollei, Westcott & Yongnuo with ATG/Canon 2.4GHz RT
Two questions, please reply if you know the answers:
I have 2 YN600ex-rt, 1canon 580 ex ii and a YN e3 rt (Transmitter), is it possible to use the optical on the 580 and the RT on the 600 at the same time using the YN e3 rt transmitter?
great vid ..thanks for spending your time to show us this video , very informative .
Gary. Can you do a video on the controller and the speedlite together.
Hi Gary,
I just want to know that is it possible to use two different makes of Speedlight's at the same time when use of -camera flash? As I have YN568exII as well as canon 600ex-RT as sometime I want to use both at the same time. How do I set it up.....
Please let me know...
Thanks
Thanks Gary....
600EX-RT possible using it with EOS 6D wireless mode without Canon ST E3 RT?
I currently use a 430EX II and find that it lacks a bit of oomph when shooting in big areas. Would buying a 600EX be a good choice?
I have canon 70D,and also youngnuo560iv,could u please,do a step by step setup guide to use as master and slave speedlight.Thank u.
what do you mean by 'it will go out' @ t=5:23 ish ???

What kind of diffuser are you using?
Hey Gary, love your stuff. I have a question. I have these flashes and the transmitter. I can connect the flashes to the transmitter and fire them with the test button, but, when I put the transmitter on my camera it wont fire the flashes. Can you give me some info on why this happens?
thanks
Sorry, we haven't had that experience with the flash, and recommend contacting Canon support directly for more efficient troubleshooting.
how do you set this flash as a master flash ??
i can get my 600ex to trigger off my 430exII a I'm doing something wrong? it was doing it in the beginning but once i shut the 600ex flash off to use a remote it wont set off my 430ex
