OMG... 50.22 ...I love the narrators hilarious Texan holler. This is a top drawer, sit up n listen story....Thank you for a great narration...🥰H. Beam Piper at his zenith....🤠!!
Loved it particularly the joy with which the hero and dumb blonde had such a great time slaughtering the Bison, sorry superbeef. So many could never be made rare.
Refreshing to find sci-fi with a discernable story line! The general slant on things probably reflects "accepted" US values of the time, but some things don't fit together very well. Don't understand why the canine interlopers would align themselves exclusively with marginalized plebs rather than courting factions within the oligarchy. Also, don't at all understand why, if the canine plan was to seize the Giant Cow Planet by force in a surprise attack, they would stage a strategically irrelevant assassination of the ambassador of a competing hegemon before making the move.
The last remarks suggest that the Solar League department of State is running a program to generate and disperse people who are brilliant and not necessarily devoted (off the job) to follow &aid Solar League machinations around the galaxy.
This story basically glorifies the way people think Texas used to be. I can't tell what the author felt about it, but the story itself seems very proud of its wild planet with it's ineffectual government. Each civilian has to keep a small army on hand (that it must bow to) to provide their own safety! And gee, why would the "dogs" want to cause trouble on Texas planet? Could it have anything to do with the way people seem to treat them. I didn't dislike the story; well written and very interesting, it's just crazy to think about how the time you live in affects the way you present things in your fiction. Aspects of some westerns seem really silly now, but they were all the rage a few decades ago. xD
H. Beam Piper is the sci fi goat in my book. Nobody can tell such full stories in so few words as him.

one of my favourites, Piper has a uniquely period way of storytelling.
I should have listened to this over a year ago.
i love the story and the narration
I first read this in High School, great story. After this I got hold of little fuzzy.
I love H Beam Piper! His vision of the future is developing, take a look at reciprocal CCW maps!

"Causing the said decedent, S. Austin Maverick, to dah." I laughed so hard I almost shot coffee out of my nose.

Machiavelli, Jr. LMAO
I was pleased there was a Benito Gomez. What would New Texas be without Meskins!?
How did he know about the mess we have about gun laws today?
I want to live on space Texas.
Sounds like a good read but like anything it could be updated.
