Wow. Never heard anything quite like this, yet also there are these little familiar bits woven throughout his gorgeous piece, in both the melody, harmonization and even textures and instrumentation. I’mhearing a languid, deeply dreamy reimagining of the 1950’s “Love is Strange” in the very first part of the main melody/harmony line and chord progression (with some lovely chord substitution on the 3rd chord and other places). There is also a tiny bit of the Beatles’ “Because,” especially when the fullest harmony comes in toward the end when accompanied by the slide guitar. Then the bridge i think maybe a fleet wood mac and a few other places I’m hearing other subtler references... can’t quite put my finger on all of them. And it all combines to something quite its own self. My ear was surprised many times throughout, by little twists in the melody and harmony, as well as the style differences between the different sections. (The harmonies in the verse and chorus sound ‘60s” while the bridge sounds more modern, 80s?, but they combine beautifully).
