He makes this excerpt look easy! This is actually a very hard to play with lots of complexity, which is why it’s a common excerpt for professional orchestra auditions! A true master at work! And what a wonderful viola!
Unless you're in the Berliner Philharmoniker, then I would keep my mouth shut. He's a terrific violist and this was not meant to show off, but to help those in preperation for playing Strauss's Don Juan.
Nice video! But two fun facts that i noticed. At 5.27 he plays e# instead of e. And at 6.35 he suggests a fingering with first position at the b but then plays 6.45 plays it on the D string! LOL
@BerlinPhil Thanks for the answer. Sadly, I can only see the upper part of the list, but is a problem with either the site or my machine... So bad, you didn't write it this way "Español"
His C string is so strong and full. Where mine is so weak and annoying! Does anybody know why this is so? It would help me so very much. Playing such music as I do is difficult to play without a proper sound from the C string.
He plays wonderfully. That said, I've always heard that one should never play both upper and lower parts in an audition unless the part is clearly marked non divisi. Maybe that's only an American orchestra thing, who knows?

Greatest viola sound in the world!
@Farnik01 Subtitles will be uploaded soon, so stay tuned!
The mark of any great string player is an ability to tackle Strauss with artistry and technical poise. This guy has both in spades!
So this is what the viola is meant to sound like! This gives me a sound to aim for in my practice. Thank you!
Der best Klang habe Ich niemals noch gehört... besonders von einer Bratsche ;)
Perfect technique and what a sound! He is perfect! :)
@fsacriste They are there! Just click on the "cc" button, scroll down and pick the Spanish subtitles.
@ThaSchwab Yes, we can. And they will be available very soon.
Está salvando minha vida! Sou grata por ter esse vídeo disponível.
Salute from Brasil herr Stegner!!!!!!
@binkyabc123 Just click on the "cc" button below the video.
Man, every time I watch any video uploaded by this channel I am inspired to practice and become great
@BerlinPhil Sorry, I just found that I can do it on Full Screen mode, so happy, one of my nieces is violist, I will send this to her. Big thanks.
Vielen Dank
Does anyone what viola is he playing? I love it!

5:27 6:35
Mistakes happen. That fingering he proposed is obviously not the optimal and more natural one
Great video 👍 Makes me want to break out Don Juan again
You don't need subtitles to hear greatness...
i like his viola!
00:40
What sound, congratulations, what viola does he have?
Perfect! Thankyou!
(What does it mean to cut after each tone? )
Excelente! Mil gracias!!
Put it on 0.25 speed to hear how your high school orchestra would sound.
Could you add some english subtitles to this? That'd be very helpful!
What type of Viola does he have?
Where is the shred version??
I think they deleted it. I've been searching for it too haha
@BerlinPhil Thanks for the answer. Sadly, I can only see the upper part of the list, but is a problem with either the site or my machine... So bad, you didn't write it this way "Español"
I wonder, could you add subtitles possibly?
Look at him go!
@ThePeoplesGuru well i guess so..haha i've heard Bashmet and his testore viola two weeks ago life
I wish that I spoke German! I'm sure there is lots of wisdom here.
There are captions available! That's how I understood it

try to go closer to the bridge when you play on the c string, it will probably help you.
You can try the thomastik wolfram spirocore string. It‘s expensive but soooo good
Ich musse mit desen learner studiert!! Danke !!
Niiice room!
Funny i found this after i had an audition for viola which required me to play an excerpt of don juan.
How tf u can do vibrato like that good
Good thing I studied German and that he speaks clearly because the subtitles were not great
@anyalun115 Probably something that costs a little more than a brand new DB9.
