Very good rendition. The setting compliments this sacred aria. This 2-lyric hymn was misattributed to 16th century Italian composer Giulio Caccini. It was actually written and recorded by Russian Vladimir Vavilov in 1970 who admired and was influenced by Caccini’s music. He originally released his recording under “Anonymous” to avoid then strict Soviet Russian ban on religious-themed music. After his death in 1973, one of his friend and fellow recording musician changed the “Anonymous” attribution to Caccini to continue the cover to avoid censorship. It wasn’t until the 80s that popular interest focused on the piece when Eastern European sopranos and others started recording and performing the hymn. By then the Soviet Union was in the process of dissolution, and people knowledgeable had disclosed the real story behind this beautiful aria.
