Layne Staley was the definition of a one and only. This song cuts to the bone, and got me through some real dark days in my life. I appreciate your cover, for it is incredible.
My dad was my best friend. He passed away on May 8, 2010 to an overdose. I was 17. Today, July 16, 2018 would be his 53rd birthday. He loved Layne Staley, and I grew up around this music playing constantly: we lived outdoors for the most part; camping, hiking, fishing, etc. His last few years, he lived in a trailer park in Snohomish, WA, and I was away from him mostly because of my mom. Used to listen to this song years back when I had nothing, fishing to catch food, struggling all around and now I sit here with a job finally, bills are paid and no more drugs listening to this song with a smile because I pulled through
As a person who loves Layne and Alice In Chains, I also was heavily addicted to heroin and crack cocaine for over 12 years. Today I am 31 years young and am five and half years clean and sober and this young pulls on my heart so much. Upchurch you’re the man brother for recreating this master piece of a song!!!

wow. This cover hits hard. As a disabled veteran who suffers from PTSD, Anxiety and sever depression these words hold so true. I was never and I mean never an Alice in Chains fan although I knew of their music. This is by far the best cover I have ever heard. I listen to it every day and it just keeps getting better and better. Thank Ryan for keeping it real! As long as you lay down the tracks folks like me will keep on listening.
Keep strong brother i promise there's a light at the end of the tunnel it just takes a while to show up thank you for you're service you've done more than the average citizen does today
You nailed this, and that's saying a lot. Because Layne Staley could really sing. I never thought anyone could cover this song, but you really did it justice. It was beautiful.
Layne would probably come up and shake your hand and say thank you. Thank you for keeping real music ALIVE! I'm coming up on my 1 year celebration of recovery from IV Heroin and Fentanyl and this song is what got me through the worst of my detox and mental battle for months after getting clean. I quit cold turkey and vanished from the earth to try and give myself one last chance at freedom and this song kept me pushing. Thank you Upchurch. Your cover gives me chills like I just heard it for the first time every single time I listen to it. It's a multiple times a day thing for me now! 🙏😇💯❤️💪
This had me bawling. I love AIC so much, especially this song. I have to say, I think Layne would love this tribute. You nailed it Ryan, well fucking done.
@@Ep0nz You know what? Addicts are the lowest of the low sometimes. The thing is, they are still people and they can change and they can atone for the things they did wrong. It's really difficult to be the loved one of an addict. Think about Layne's Mom, she found him 2 weeks after he died. Layne systematically set up his life so he could feed his addiction and die on his own terms. That's really selfish too.Layne was a very sick man but I love him to this day and always will. Ryan understands all of this. Seems to me the only person who doesn't understand this, is you. I am an addict in long term recovery, I just celebrated 9 years on May 12th. I am still, all these years later, gaining back trust and respect of the people I hurt the most. Nobody thinks as a kid "When I grow up, I want to be a heroin addict". You have no clue what Layne would want. None whatsoever.
Been clean off H since 2018. Would sit in my room and listen to Aic all day praying to get my shit together and get clean before it killed me. If you really sit and listen to the lyrics just about every song is Layne warning people of drugs and how he was trapped just like many of us. Just wish he would of found the help he needed his voice can never be replaced/duplicated
Definitely. I keep coming back..I remember when Alice in chains came out with it when I was really young...they are awsome but man Upchurch did a great job with this recording..and ive always rooted for church cause I'm a small town vt guy who grew up happy hidden away in a small town... I am blessed to have done so..I neber had kids but if I did I woukd be proud to raise em in a small town.... Blessings to you and your fam❤
@@Jackzay90 Some people don't play that shit, you should check out Corey Taylors interview absolutely blasting artists who use Pro Tools with auto tune on stage
I know. I don't even hate people using pitch correction. It's used subtly to correct minor intonation issues on virtually every studio recording for decades now. What I hate is there are so many people who somehow don't hear it even when it's aggressive as hell like this. It can be used artistically, but this is an example of it being used to try to make someone who can't sing sound like they can.@@whatabouttheearth
Holy crap, I never thought a cover like this was possible, and it blew me away. I was a teenager in the 90s, so AIC has been my favorite band, and never thought I would hear a cover that could hold a candle to Layne's unique vocals and range of emotions. Absolutely blown away.
@@tsunamisun2369 I'll give you that one, though it's a pretty subtle use of autotune. I take it he used it for recording Creeker 2, where his voice emulates the gravelly tones of Layne throughout (autotune can only do so much before sounding obviously like autotune. In this case, it's subtle, and even with it, it doesn't take away from the fact that 1. The emotion is most certainly there, and 2. Find me someone other than Aaron Lewis to pull off this song successfully. NOBODY can pull off Layne, but some subtle autotune isn't going to negate the fact that this cover is very well done. He kept the sound, he kept the emotion, and chose not to make the cover "his" by tweaking the score/time/notes)? I normally DESPISE autotune, as I've been trained in piano, cello, guitar, and bass, and feel post-production tends to take away from raw music anymore, and it tends to ruin it. But, just because you state it's autotuned, isn't going to make me enjoy listening to this cover any less, because it does not blatantly take over his voice, nor does it take away from the song. It's still pleasing to the ear, and almost every long-time AIC fan I have played this for has enjoyed it. He's obviously not using T-Pain's, Carly Rae Jepson's, or the Disney Crew's autotune guy. It's not glaringly obvious, so I'm not seeing the huge issue.
@@bratshats Of course it's not a huge issue. Anyone can do what they want. I just see all these comments about how it's perfect and I know that he used autotune, and most people don't. If you listen to the original there's much more of a human element to it. To me, that human element is more important than "perfection". EDIT: I do actually know people personally that can "pull off" this song, It's actually not that difficult technically speaking as long as they have the emotion behind it.
@@tsunamisun2369 kinda like the debate on who does Hurt better. Cash's version is fantastic, maybe even better to some. But it doesn't touch the human element part that the original artist put into it.
Never heard a single upchurch song before this and this is the only one I’ve heard , but I am responsible for over 100 views on this one video alone ….what a masterpiece and beautiful homage to one of the greats man !
Was and always will be an Alice In Chains fan. Layne Staley was a huge inspiration to me. You absolutely MURDER this song. Can't believe how amazing you sound. Layne would be proud as hell man. INCREDIBLE voice!!!!! I've watched this cover at least 75 times now and still watching it in 2021.
I just discovered this and I am BLOWN AWAY. This is on the level of Hurt by Johnny Cash and Simple Man by Shinedown so far as Im concerned with how covers go.
Holy Shit Ryan, This is hands-down the absolute best cover I’ve ever heard of this song and the best cover of Layne Staley’s voice I’ve ever heard bro. I really hope that Jerry Cantrell has seen this

The last time I heard this song was a year ago after my father's funeral. He always was so captured by the messages of men like Layne and Chris Cornell because it was the only time in the world he felt understood. Thank you for this
I think all these guys would be proud of him!! Like I wish they all were alive it could get back together Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, and you can't forget about ole Eddie vedder those guys are what made that type of grunge what it was. Rest In Peace. My sincerest condolences, friend. They're forever right there with you, I hope you're able to find some peace in this life. It never gets easier, the grief of such a loss. We simply grow strong enough to continue moving while carrying that burden. Much Love
Just got home from your show in Reading PA. I was pleasantly surprised to hear this song live. The whole show was amazing, and when we left, everyone was yelling USA, USA, USA! Amazing.
Layne has been my favorite singer since I first heard him when I was 14, I'm 37 now still feel the same way. This is my favorite cover of an AIC song. It's beautiful! I collect Layne memorabilia and I love the painting you have in your videos, keep doing what you are doing 💗
I clicked on this expecting to have a nice chuckle about "someone trying to do this song". Instead I heard someone that really understood it, and payed a legitimate tribute. Nice Moves!!
There will never be another Layne, but Ryan is the closest thing to Layne that does him justice and shows respect. Mr. upchuch you are a true living legend please cover some more Alice In Chains and keep on doing what you do you are humble and deserve utmost respect. Peace my friend.
Upchurch…I don’t know if you read these but you singing this song save my life. I posted a few years ago and the love and support is overwhelming! From a disabled veteran….thank you!
I remember listening to Alice almost 30 years ago OG. You, young sir, have nailed this song. I just started listening to your tunes Ryan and I'm impressed bro...

68M views, the fourth highest on Upchurch’s channel, proves just how awesome Ryan’s cover of this song is. Only someone who’s done the hard yards can do this song justice.
See? this is legacy. Long after Layne has passed, he continues to live on through talented people like upchurch. Anyone can get married, have children, and have a job, but very few can leave a legacy behind that is recognised world wide.
By HKL!!! Mama loves you so much Emma Grace and Abigail!!! You 3 girls keep my heaet alive!!! Macy Nicole you are a strong young woman and i am proud of u all three.
Anyone can get married and have a family, but would you really be happier with a legacy built on your own loneliness and desperation? This song came from a dark and painful place and as much as I love it, I would much rather be happy than relate to this song.
This is the best song ever written by Alice in Chains and showcases Layne's voice unlike any other. He does this song some serious justice. Love seeing their music live on and bridging the gap between genres in this way!!
Dylan Burns..... I am 39yrs old, I totally understand what your saying. These songs I lived , loved, and made memories to growing up! Oh how I wish, I could just have some of that feeling back that these songs bring out in me! A Time, A place, A smell, A memory.... When you close your eyes and your there again.. you see the past, your living it for a split second. You can get lost in it, but then you open your eyes and realize "that was a piece of the good world, the good life, you'll never be there again or have those feelings the exact way again. When a writer and a song can Rush your body, full of emotions and bring that out in you WOW.! Job well done!

This is how this song would go and how I have imagined it if Layne was in a recording studio remaking this song and having it digitally remastered. This is outstanding brother. I think you did him proud.
I was seriously upset when I seen you covered this. Layne is and will always be untouchable. So I stuck around and listened and I'm shocked at the way you captured Layne. He would dig it. Layne Staley was unmatched in his time and he was one of my idols. Along with Dimebag Darrell and a few others. They had the ability to make music in a way that captured people's minds and imaginations. Because it was more than just that. Way more than just music... Layne Staley was one of the very few singers/songwriters that can take something that's only two paragraphs long and be able to create something that is so..... So... Hauntingly beautiful.. They were words But you could feel those words moving through you you could see them. When you closed your eyes and just let tt carry you away . I never got to thank you Layne,. Your music was a huge part of my life going up., good and bad . And it's stil creating the same effect for people decades later. R.I.P. brother. Untill Valhalla

I can hear the love and respect that Church feels for Staley come across in Church's voice with this cover. Not to be presumptuous but maybe even the sadness...ya know...I don't know, I can't say. But I can say that cover was an excellent idea executed perfectly. Nice. Unbeknownst to himself, what Upchurch said of Lane Staley's music is the an absolute truth of his own...

Whenever I hear this song anymore I can't even get to where the vocals kick in before tears are pouring out my eyes and streaming down my face. If I ever got cast in a Hollywood movie and the director wanted me to cry on cue, all I'd have to say is "Give me my phone and give me 20 seconds..."
Agreed. This shows so much respect to the original artist, it's unreal. I didn't know he passed on which is a major bummer. Rest in peace to a true legend.

Yeah, u cannot really replace Layne Staley, but this song, makes me cry.
Hope you’re doing well! Happy Independence Day and God bless you, the South, and America

You nailed this, and that's saying a lot. Because Layne Staley could really sing. I never thought anyone could cover this song, but you really did it justice. It was beautiful.
I agree with you Kris Ager
Maynard does it better.
Still here. Still loveing church. He's still keeping me going with his music.
❤ ... " The Way that Layne Staley Sang ... GRABBED YOU & MADE YOU LISTEN TO WHAT HE WAS SAYING... ...HE MADE YOU ACTUALLY FEEL THE WORDS..."

✔️ Out mad season
Not his words though
@@josephducher3487Layne didn’t write a lot of their songs but he wrote the words for Nutshell. So yes, they are his words

If no one's told you recently... I'm proud of you. Recovery is the ultimate battle..

This had me bawling. I love AIC so much, especially this song. I have to say, I think Layne would love this tribute. You nailed it Ryan, well fucking done.

I agree with mother of hounds and the others I lilked there response
i couldnt agree more, well said
Upchurch called addicts like layne the lowest of the low. Layne wouldn’t want some half assed cover by someone who thinks like that.
2024 who's still here and been saved by the music
Hell yea brother
Been clean off H since 2018. Would sit in my room and listen to Aic all day praying to get my shit together and get clean before it killed me. If you really sit and listen to the lyrics just about every song is Layne warning people of drugs and how he was trapped just like many of us. Just wish he would of found the help he needed his voice can never be replaced/duplicated

With you man
Definitely. I keep coming back..I remember when Alice in chains came out with it when I was really young...they are awsome but man Upchurch did a great job with this recording..and ive always rooted for church cause I'm a small town vt guy who grew up happy hidden away in a small town... I normally hate songs covered by another artist but he absolutely killed this!
Layne has a crazy vocal range and Church nailed it.

😂 it's fucking autotuned.
@@whatabouttheearth Instagram filters to make you look like you're hot, pitch correction to make it sound like you can sing...what a time to be alive.
@@Jackzay90
Some people don't play that shit, you should check out Corey Taylors interview absolutely blasting artists who use Pro Tools with auto tune on stage
Dude, I would have never imagined comparing anyone to layne. You set the new standard for this song. Laynes gotta be proud of this. Gave me chills
Cap, nothing beats Layne
Holy crap, I never thought a cover like this was possible, and it blew me away. I was a teenager in the 90s, so AIC has been my favorite band, and never thought I would hear a cover that could hold a candle to Layne's unique vocals and range of emotions. Absolutely blown away.
Nails it!!
He uses autotune here, Layne never used it.

Honestly my opinion I feel the lyrics more when I listen to church’s cover idk man he’s just different
@@TheDONGaming101 he sounds better
Ryan Upchurch, your voice is golden...So good to listen to your music. Thank you so much. This song is getting me through a very rough patch here. 💗💗💗💗
“Layne made you actually feel the words” Well said mate
You made it your own, but paid such beautiful homage to the original. And that’s what performing a cover is all about. Stellar job. ❤️
We missed so much good music that group was capable of. Thanks for appreciating good music Ryan.
It’s gonna be crazy when the dust settles and this guys on top of the game
Could listen to this on repeat. Makes me feel like my dad is still here with me when I hear it..
I understand, My dad has been sick, he's 72 and I've been a nervous wreck, it's so hard. I'm so lucky he's still with us because I can't imagine Life without him 💔I'm so sorry about your dad,one of the worst things to go through, at least, you've got some good music to listen to, to ease the mind!! My thoughts are with you ❤
@@melaniecartwright2409 prayers to your family as well. Good music makes life so much easier. It's crazy how it works.

Same fella….. same..
I really hope Jerry Cantrell sees/hears this and makes a big ole smile. U brought back damn good memories of the 90s for me. Thank u.
Ethan Peek at his place
Fuck YES!
Cole Watson Bummer, but I think that's one liberal I can look the other way for 😉
5 years later still love this so much and listen to it regularly!!
Kurt and laynes music saved my life from drugs! Glad I kept pushing for the results I needed to survive and be the father I needed to be almost 2 years clean thanks to hard work and dedication. God bless yall
Dude.... Mad respect.... I'm 51 and was listening to Alice when this album came out....
I wish this song would never end!
Amen
Every time I repay it. It’s like it’s brand new.
It’s 2020 and I’m still listening to this song anybody else listening to this
I’m sitting in my 97 k1500 z71at 12 am after hanging out with my buddies drinking a Mountain Dew and listing to it

All the time!!
People trying to compare this to the original pretty stupid!!! This man is paying tribute and made the best cover of this song I've ever heard
Agreed. This shows so much respect to the original artist, it's unreal. I didn't know he passed on which is a major bummer. Rest in peace to a true legend.
he does an awsome job
I couldn't agree with you more I've never heard anyone sing this song n almost sound just like him
Good cover but the best cover of this comes from Aaron Lewis.
DUDE! I was about to say the same thing! Lol
