"Some way. Some how. These bikes can save the world... And our souls along with it." The quote comes from this immensely inspirational video. Although, she's talking about cargo bikes, I think the quote addresses ANY type of bike. Thanks for sharing this!
Inspiring video. I think my family needs a cargo bike. We live close to our kids school but there is a hill so an electric assist would be a must. It would be great to bypass all the mini vans.
Love the video trailer. No I'm not broke, I have a great job and I have an SUV that gets driven as least as possible. I also live in Northern Canada where it snows 6 months a year. But I love my Surley Big Dummy cargo bike. I built my house specifically in a downtown urban area where I can walk to get groceries in the winter and ride my cargo bike when the snow melts in the spring. My children are growing up on the back of my bike, they love it.
wow.. those kids look like they are having so much fun. reminds me of BOXCARS that kids used to make but now they can just ride in that little boxcar thing. so i think they have seatbelts, helmets. WOW how FUN! GREAT exercise for mom and it also is part electric. i want one of these
This video is so much fun--thank you for helping express in words the meaning of those smiles on our faces when we ride our cargo bikes. :) About the beginning part--perhaps because I had an idea of what was coming, I didn't dislike it. But if others insist people would become disinterested too quickly, I wonder what would happen if the intro could be interrupted by some of those glorious scenes of the bike + children zipping down the hill? Again, thank you for your work!
Awesome! Can't wait to see the "movie." I feel inspired! If it wasn't 50+ miles to work, I would totally consider a bike commute. May be a change in employer or career in my future!
Fantastic video Liz, came across it last night from an EcoVelo post and watched it a few times through. My wife and I traveled out from Colorado Springs to Portland just for the Cargo Bike Roll Call and it was that weekend that I had my love for cargo bikes confirmed, was fun to see us in the vid. Can't wait to submit our own Colorado-hued video to your crowd-source efforts. :) Pedal On ~ Allen
you mean like my fld120 that does haul 40,000lbs of cargo across town daily. not always that much, but never less than 8k. i am usually loaded pretty heavy. it would take more bikes than the roads could handle to actually do all the hauling in the day to day that is actually needed. this is a pipe dream.
Actually Xtracycles are featured prominently here. They are created by converting almost any bike with a Free Radical conversion kit for about $300. Also, this is only a trailer for what will become a feature-length doc. For that I have received footage from Joe Biel of Tom's (DIY) Cargo Bikes in Portland and plenty of other great homemade cargo bike footage from other members of the FB group. BTW more and more often I hear about folks buying a cargo bike to SAVE money...
hey liz, could you recommend me where i can possibly order this bikes and can they ship it abroad like for example here in southeast asia? that would be swell, thanks in advance.
been riding for years with my cargo bike, actually I got the cargo trailer and I coupled it to my electric mountain bike with big Schwalbe balloon tires and I recharge with a 100 watt solar panel, I wish I could get more range though my VA Hospital appts. are about 28 mi round trip, just out of my bikes reasonable range.
We still need truck drivers and their big rigs, but you can now use biodeisel, and in some states you can pull more than 2 trailers, therefore, that 40,000 pounds you are bragging about then becomes 80,000 or 120,000 pounds. That will impress many of the "green" people you seem to think don't appreciate your cargo hauling. There are rigs in Alaska & Australia that pull up to 100 trailers. Now that is greener trucking!! :)
Thanks for your feedback. I encourage you to watch the updated trailer, and visit my site (see above) where you'll find I'm maybe 1/3 housewife, 1/3 professional filmmaker and 1/3 open-minded idealist. Our Volvo was purchased used (a fraction of $40K) when we had kids. It is the first car I've owned and it has come in handy! I'm not asking, nor do I expect "struggling" people--or anyone else--to go car-free now. That said, a $1,000 utility bike can pay for itself pretty damn quick these days!
Most people that are motivated are successful. With that being said, don't hate on some one for being successful and continuing to do so. Find your reason for lack of motivation and correct it. There is always a reason for lack of motivation.
As long as you don't expect a silver bullet solution, being ecological/economical is easily feasible. The key is diversification. Do we need to ban cars? No! we need to diversify the way we go places. That's the message!
Where I live (Curitiba-Brazil) we would have 2 main issues with that: 1 - there is no space for bikes in the trafic, the risk of being killed by a car is high, this year, 8 people died in the first 3 months of the year near me; drivers do not respect bikes; 2 - the city is not flat, but full of hills, the eletric motor assistance would be a necessary help.
@LIZCAN Among people I know, the bad news *is* in our faces all day, every day. We had some great brainstorms here about having a cargo bike party -- getting families to tag along, bring thewhole party (including bike blender) to a park so trip and party would be highly visible... except now that it's sleeting, that looks so hard core. (My ride in this morning with just traces of sleet was FUN FUN FUN but I know to most people it looked uncomfortable...)
Using a bicycle when you can makes a lot of sense. You save money, reduce your impact on the environment and get some exercise which makes you look and feel better (besides the long term health benefits). With a minimum amount of practical ability you can maintain/repair your bike and riding is a fun, social thing to do. For me cycling gives a sense of freedom and enjoyment that will never get old. Need fuel? Grab a sandwich from your backpack!
Thanks for your comment Beesa! Consider supporting our feature length doc, LESS CAR MORE GO: www.kickstarter.com/projects/1887563980/less-car-more-go-the-cargo-bike-documentary
Liz Canning Thank you StoryeTime, I really appreciate your comment (that's just the plain truth as I see it!). Liz, yes I definitely will. I've been made redundant twice in the UK and bicycles have helped me so much it's unbelievable. I love messing with my bike or helping a friend fix their bike. Keep pushing those pedals, our chains set us free! ;-)
So getting a cargo bike. Been commuting by bike for along time. Many weeks the only thing I use the car for is grocery shopping. With one of these I could almost sell it.
Just a note to defend the concept of spending money on a bike. Consider it an investment in your health & well-being. It's sorta like buying healthy food and quitting the bad food. In the end you save on medical costs, you save on medicines, etc. One of my cargo bikes cost me $1,800 but I rode it across the US a few times and across Canada. Now, think of the cost of gas for an economy car to do those same miles... and there is your $1,800. See, the money is there is you allow it to appear.
Look at the article on Wikipedia about Oil depletion. It's inevitable that within 20 years from now fuel prices will get very expensive and 45 years from now impossibly so.Fossil fuel Cars,SUV's and trucks will end up being the unmovable junk homes for the homeless.Just last year I switched from being a motor vehicle user to becoming a bicycle commuter (became enlightened). Cargo bikes especially electrified will be the prime movers of the future.I'd rather cycle go far and fairly fast than walk.
I love what a compelling, fun, practical case this makes for cargo biking. However, the first minute, with all the political radio bits, may have less committed/invested viewers clicking away. I'd say make your point, but get to the fun faster, eh? Does this have a website I can send people to? Hard to take action without a place to direct it.
Thanks! Link to my site is there in the description, TH-cam hid it: click "Show more info." Working on a revised version that will clarify the crowdsourcing process and how to get involved--for now you can find it on my site. Will take out F*** democratic party, not sure about shortening harsh opening. To me the real magic is in that--no matter how much tragic crap we carry around in the back of our minds, and no matter how bad my morning is, it is ALL better once we are on the bike.
There wasn't a single cargo bike shown that cost under a $1000. Sure, if you got the money it's worth it, but not everyone has the money. They need to shown some homebuilt stuff in there. D.I.Y.
Notice the Marin County housewife still has her $40K Volvo in the driveway. I don't think it's realistic to think that "struggling" people will drop their car and buy a $1,000 bike to save money. However supplementing your car with a bike, to reduce emissions, save fossil fuels and get exercise is a GREAT IDEA!
Less kids more life...you think breeding until infinity is possible if everybody just rides bikes...I'm an avid biker...I also know basic math; infinite growth and consumption are impossible on a finite sphere.
I am not the intended audience -- who is ? I think the crazy morning is only a bit too long, but I know what is coming. I agree with others and suggest taking out the Democratic Party thing, but also -- and this is related to what I feel is going to be problematic - I would take out the long stairs, the Volvo station wagon and the neighbour's Porsche. Lots of people live on hills and use them as an excuse to not cycle as you well know, so try to make this first part as inclusive as possible.
I think taking out the effing democratic party isn't such a good idea. What would be the point? Democrats will support this initiative anyways and they should also realize that many who support green initiatives are rather disillusioned with the Democrats. The phrase here makes it VERY clear that cargo bikes are actually quite practical and not a form of identity politics, or a highly misinformed, religious-like idealism.
The hell with the car that she says isn't costly, look at the house and listen to the political rhetoric, yes buy the $1000 bike and the rest of her B.S. And yes I ride a lot(Wal-Mart), built my on trailer after researching them on the internet. Good Luck with your Documentary?
You want shit for free, or stuff made in China? You'll have to pay for craftmanship that uses high grade metals. Stop whinning and learn how to put $10-50 away every paycheck.
FANTASTIC ! Very well produced piece.
I did fall mad for this style of bike in Holland some years ago. How can you not ?
Mobile Lifestyle Enabled.
I'm from Germany and find the video very very good. So I still have a spark of faith in the Americans as an environmentalist.

Can't wait to see this! Awesome!

"There's this huge lineup of cars" is the sweetest phrase to a cyclist.

I really hope we go through or are going through a massive bike path building campaign for this country.
Wow - the kids love it. Comfort on two wheels and yeah cargo bikes are multi-dimensional. All manner of uses I'm sure. Keep riding. Mark Jick - UK
Interesting idea...what exactly did you have in mind? Are you connected with them? Thanks!
Awesome!!!!
thumbs up from belgium

I love my bike too.

😆😂 These are sooooO much cooler and more fun than a car ANY DAY 😄
I definitely want to invest in a cargo bike, it'd be good for this to become more popular in Texas :)
@2bytandem
i'm looking forward to your "Colorado-hued" video!
Niceee !! Greetings from Dominican Republic.

I got mine in july 2012, it is electric now, using ebikes.ca, I love, my car does not. Good day to you all.
Good to see you are still into bikes...would love to connect with you...Erika from Bellingham

HOw about fusing this with "Improveverywhere"???
What did she say at 1:18? This video has changed!

@minckminck the f-bomb creates problems. I love it as a statement, but it means I really can't share it everywhere.
Can you give DIY cargo byke.
@motthebug ah - yes the f word itself. I do understand. Kudos to you and your project.
