22 years and going in the appliance field as a tech for Whirlpool and many others. This machine uses a plastic pulley held on by a 13mm nut on the bottom. The factory released these units in 2010 and didn't apply blue loctite to the pulley nut threads thus the nut will back off over time and cause the pulley to rub the plastic shield and jump by plastic teeth made onto the pulley top causing a grinding noise during spin and wash. if you look under the unit and see the pulley has rubbed the shield then replace the belt, pulley and shield then apply blue loctite to the threads and let the loctite cure overnight. If this is not your problem then the only thing left to make that noise would be a bad gear case. I know you have probably done something about it by now but i'm posting to help others with this issue also. Thanks

Just wanted you to know that I had this exact same issue on our washer (same make/model, minus agitator) and it was the 13mm nut on bottom!!! It had come loose. I took it apart, Loctite on it and waiting until tonight to try. BUT, I'm certain that was issue as the belt had come off and I could move the pulley by hand and make same noise. Wanted to say THANK YOU mcgill72143 you advice was spot on!!!!!!

I bought a maytag centennial in September, it was delivered on the 30th that month (nearly 3 weeks after the purchase, but i knew this would be the case when i ordered it, because it was on backorder). On November 13, so yes, less than a month and a half later I put a service call in to maytag to get a repair man out because it was under full coverage still. The repair man came out and figured it was probably the splutch. Ordered one and about a week and a half later came out to put it on. This did not solve the problem. He came back to see what else it could be, again still under warranty, and decided to replace some shifter thing that pulls the splutch in and out of place for agitate and wash. (i think) We started it back up with a small load of towels (4 body towels, a couple hand towels, and maybe a dozen wash clothes/rags). After the initial agitate, it starting making a grinding/clicking sounds like gears that were slipping, but it was non-stop. So now I am hauling it back to the store at which it was purchased and demanding a refund because it is the transmission starting to go out. One more thing to the story, seeing as we only had it for less than a month and a half, it is just me and my girlfriend, and we wash maybe 2 loads a week, so about a dozen loads and the tranny is going out. Something is not right here.

I’m on Maytag #3. The first set is in a rental bought in 2008. Works fine to date. And it replaced speed queen. The way it was made they’ve probably leased the name at one point. Second Maytag came with the house we bought. I replace the plastic fan on dryer once no problem since . Machine was from the 90s. Still works perfect. Bought a new house with a Maytag Neptune front loader it was at least ten years old but the dryer was older the 90s like the old at our other house at least. One month later the Neptune blew its board and I could only find s top load Maytag commercial tech high efficiency. So far so good.

I have the same model It started making the same noise, after 4 years of owning it. After a few days it wouldn't spin the drum at all. Turns out the nut that holds the pulley for the transmission loosened up and then fell off. That noise is the pulley rubbing on the belt guard. A rachet, 8mm socket (to take belt cover off), and a 13mm socket (to put that nut back on) and you can fix it free.

Apple Stump Bushcraft Stuff and T: I'm sure glad I never got a Maytag in 2018 when my original 1992 Maytag went capoot. I got the 2018 SPEED QUEEN TR5 SERIES WASHER which has no transmission. So far no service calls needed. It sure looks like MAYTAG really went downhill. I was almost going to consider buying a 2018 MAYTAG but now I'm glad I didn't. The only good washer you can buy now is the SPEED QUEEN TC5000 SERIES OLD SCHOOL AGITATOR WASHER.

Recently went Washer & Dryer shopping. Asked how long modern Washers/Dryers last ... most gave the 10 to 12 year standard salesmen answer. One sales women told me that most modern washer will last about 5 to 6 years ... Dryers should last about twice that. The only washer (that a salesmen told me) will last 15 to 20 years is a Speed Queen commercial unit. These units are built old school mechanical ... no circuit boards.
2005 Whirlpool completed its acquisition of Maytag and began integrating the two appliance companies, In fairness ... most salesmen told me privately that the brand has gone downhill since.

A new Speed Queen W&D will set you back approx. $1500-$1700 depending on the model but the good news is you won't go thru this aggravation again, they last over 20 yrs so well worth the price. Good luck to ya.

Jam that many clothes in ANY washer and double up on the soap like that and you'll have issues. You may want to check with your local community college to see if they offer "basic household machine operation". The instructions under the lid are basic, but generally enough for most. For you, reading the entire manual should have been a MUST, especially the troubleshooting section. Unfortunately, not everyone on the planet is qualified to operate a washing machine.

My 1977 GE filter flo washed loads just like this without a hitch for 40 years and its still going - don't blow smoke up my keester, this a Maytag and supposed to be a quality appliance (NOT!) - Before everything went to hell you didn't have to treat a washer like a delicate flower for fear it wouldn't wash more than a shirt and pair of socks without self destructing. Samsungs are literally exploding and putting holes in peoples walls during the spin cycle, I don't remember anything like that happening before they started building these computer driven junkpiles -- give it enough time, your washer will die well before its time and your opinion will change. Some people are buying two washers inside of 5 years or less, the whole things a joke between the govt. EPA and manufacturers now building scrap appliances it wont be long before were all beating our clothes on a rock again to get them clean - the rock is far more reliable than 99% of these new washers.

    • @yambo59

Maybe so, but I don't think every failure in the myriad of bad washer videos is directly attributed to overloading, but even if it is the dang machine should be made to handle it at least a few times before puking its guts out - especially for what they charge for these POS. People do overload washers, ive done it myself three or four times in my life, but my GE still lasted 40 years and still going. You overload one of these new ones just once and it might well be the end for it. Sorry I cant defend a product with no real suspension system and plastic drive gears, plastic in a heavy load like this is ludicrous and made to fail. I know my trusty old GE will fail someday, so after looking at videos, reviews and new washers on the sales floor it didn't take a genius to see build quality has fallen to an appalling low and they are no longer built to last, no matter who is loading them. I bought a new speed queen and its so much better a washer than what theyre selling now, all steel gears and serious agitation action - I put in a large load and its done and totally clean in 30 minutes, 37 if you select extra rinse. My friends fancy $1,300 front loader takes almost an hour and a half and the clothes smell like mold even though she does the monthly cleansing cycle suggested by the manual - so shes waiting on the washer all the time now and wishes she had fixed their old Maytag set instead. It used to be you waited on the dryer now you wait on the washer longer than we used to wait on the dryer, that's a significant change in performance and wash times, not to mention the total collapse in reliability and longevity.

So I've had this same washer for sometime. I purchased it to replace a whirlpool smart washer only to find out Maytag was bought by whirlpool.
The lights should have been the key, but many products share same technology and I didn't pay attention to the details as I was in need of a washe, (pronto).
This Maytag washer makes the same ratcheting noise as in your video.
I will say that over time (years) of use it finally stopped making noises.
    But what a pain.
The whirlpool was almost silent before a sensor messed up right after the warranty ran out.
So I have played this game before. the repair 2/3 of new machine no more than a debunked warranty and then I realized why didn't I pony up for the new machine without headaches
These are nice machines when the do their job but don't get attached and fix them they aren't worth it unless you have a buddy that can help you out with costs or you are technically able to repair.

The detergent and fabric softener are immaterial, other than to demo that it was added according to the washer's instructions. Buy Maytag at your own risk. Thanks for watching.

I got a centennial HE about 3 or 4 years ago. I have hated it from the beginning. Load size is quite small, or it will not work right. The transmission went out in a year, and my extended Lowes warranty service took almost a month to repair the machine. A few months ago, it started messing up. My son took it apart, and while he did not find out what was wrong, it worked again till this week. Now it is looking like the shiftier is bad.

    • @crazykizmet
      @crazykizmet 9 ปีที่แล้ว

in addition to mechanical problems, the machine has no filter for lint. That may be fine for some people, but I do not use a dryer.
Add the small capacity, and this is a terribly disappointing purchase.
On the bright side, the machine is quite light, and should be easy to haul off compared to many washers. But it will not bring much money as scrap metal.

The sounds from your washer while washing is definitely from two different sources. The clicking sound is the timer turning as it turns. The other noise is the agitator turning noise. All sounds like something is rubbing each other or premature worn parts working together.
My Maytag Centennial Series is one model earlier than yours it doesn't make the noise like yours without the led lights. But it does make an above average noise and vibration. It surprised me because I paid a premium price for it when new and expected more refine level of quality. It lasted for eight years. In its latest year of life it started to make high pitch bearing type of noise. It might be the motor bearing problem is developing. Didn't want to spend money on an old machine that might get snowballed to more other new problems to come. It was trashed and replaced with an elcheapo unit "HAIER" brand cost only half the price of the Maytag. I am going to take chances. Just don't feel like buying based on famous brand names of the past anymore. In the past I've brought low class non famous brands eg. "Roper " broke after 18-19 years of service. Others less expensive units Iglis and Kenmore last somewhere 8-13 years. Definitely not worthy to paid extra for Maytag brand appliances anymore.

So the control knob has selections for load sizes, and we followed instructions included with the machine for load and balancing. I'm thinking Maytag should add some graphics to accompany the load selection verbiage, something like a picture of a sock for "small," two socks for "medium," two socks and a washcloth for "large," and two socks, a washcloth and a dish towel for "heavy load." That's about what this cheap-charlie POS might be able to handle without breaking down. This is not the first use of this machine, nor was it a typical load of wash - most loads during its so-called useful life were much smaller, in the medium range, color-sorted, etc.The grinding noises didn't start on the day the video was shot.
It has been replaced. Unfortunately, the new machine has the exact same lighting indicator panel and, goes through the "sensing" cycle, and was likely made at the same factory in China where the Maytag came from. We bought a 3-year extended warranty with the new one. At least when it craps out after a couple months, we'll have some recourse.

+Aj Oelrich It ended up being replaced with a new washer of a different brand. The controls for the new one are quite similar and I suspect that all that's different between the two is the "livery;" i.e., the name of the manufacturer, color scheme, etc. I'm afraid that the "guts" of the machine are identical. Still, the new one works. We'll see if it too is a POS in due course.

I do not put as many clothes in a load as your video showed, but it is typically a pretty big load as I have a household of 8. I have had my machine for several years and just started having issues. I am pretty sure my issue is the transmission since the sound only happens during the agitation/wash cycle. It is fine on the spin cycle. I've been pretty rough on the machine and it still works. I will agree, all home appliances made in current years are junk that don't use enough water and have very poor durability. Maytag was bought out by Whirlpool in 2007 so you just unknowingly bought a Whirlpool washer with the Maytag brand name on it. I would be returning it and buying Speed Queens. You will be much more satisfied if you do. Still, use less additives!

I wasn't as savvy about repairing appliances at the time this happened. Since then, we had a 7 year-old dishwasher spring a major leak under the door. I figured it would cost $ hundreds to have a repairman come out and work on it, so I did some research, figured out what wrong, ordered the part online and replaced it myself. There's something to be said for hiring a pro, but for the dishwasher it wasn't necessary.

Built like a tank, and the best warranties on the market. New washing machines are completely trash and don't get me started on HE. No idea what happened, but even the big brand names that go for 500$ and up are all the same. They have the same motor and sound the same, and all built to fail within a year. Our AG's office is usually not too interested in consumer product
problems unless they get a great many complaints, or if a product
injured or killed someone. They seem more focused on cyber crime and
identity theft it seems. Just the nature of the legal system.
The warranty on this particular machine was good for one year. I don't believe that the manufacturer claimed it would for any particular lifespan, but any major appliance should be good for 10-15 years; it's not uncommon for well-made washers to last that long or longer.
We weighed our options and amortized them, and the best alternative we could come up with was replacing the machine. We purchased an extended warranty on the new one, which I think is generally a crap shoot at best; some financial wizards advise against them, but we're not rolling in dough these days and could not afford to buy a new machine if this one doesn't last.
Thanks for your comment. Very much appreciated.

I dont care about maytag, and last thing I want is a junky 10 year old machine. I've never had a washer that washed better than SAMSUNG HE. The truth is truth, HE ROCKS. It uses about 1/2 the water, and is double the size. Even though it washes 15min longer, the size over makes up for it, and you end up saving time. The legend that HE is bad is just legend. And who told you that repairing a 10 year old washer was cheaper than sending a brand new washer for warranty (if that will ever happen)?

    • @carlgogh

They're not scammers, it is basic physics... No water + top load x Gravity = clothes get pulled down to the bottom and ground up in the agitator like coffee beans in a burr grinder. Get the old fashioned kind that fills up with water. You'll be glad you did.

Word to the wise for your next purchase: buy a Speed Queen. The design is the same one they've been using for decades, it is solid, no plastic parts (other than the knobs), it has a solid stainless steel tub and they last. for. decades. as in up to 30. I had a Hurlpoop that appeared to be the badge engineered version of the same machine. The auger ratchet in the dasher ("agitator" is such a William F. Buckley word) banged so loudly when washing that the neighbors next door (houses about 30 feet apart, all windows of both houses closed) heard the thing agitating. I sent it back within three days in favor of a GE Hydrowave HE. The GE was a piece of shit, and barely outlasted the warranty, but it was quiet for most of the three years we had it. Using an LG top-loader now, and it seems to be holding up well, but my next washer will have a wringer on it.
Actually, a pre-Hurlpoop Maysnag may be a good investment.

I do understand all this whining and crying about overloading your washer, it comes as no surprise that people today wouldn’t know a good washer because they never noticed one or owned one and growing up, their clothes just magically appeared. My washer was over 25 years old before I replaced it and was overloaded as a lot of you say, nearly every load and used nearly every day. I was told that it was discontinued with a model that our local retailer refuses to sell. It has only been a few weeks with the the one I have now and the “Temp/Water Level Switch” has already gone out and needs to be replaced. I should have just called the service repair man (person) and kept a good washer (I do still have it in storage?). As I remember growing up in a house with 10 of us kids and mom using the same washer for over 15 years and overloading it, hahaha (you people and “its overloaded”). Today's mindset, "You can’t make money if you don’t have repeat customers" and I see we have a hole country of “well I read it on the Internet” people with pockets full of money to throw away.

    • @yambo59
      @yambo59 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Youre so right - Im 57 and never seen anything like it, in some cases they actually try to defend the machine and excuse its premature failure by citing operator error and overloading. Granted one shouldn't over load, but its a fact that back when they made quality washers overloading did not wreck the washer, if anything it might not rinse as well or go off balance, but it didn't strip gears and destroy the appliance. And I dont remember one time an old washer literally exploded like the Samsung top loaders are doing-! My 1977 GE Filter Flo is still going and only this year started needing its first repairs, still had its original belt and pump even, and with some new parts its working good as ever, and the old belt was still in useable shape, but I replaced it anyway. Try and get any appliance today to last even ten years let alone 40, and notice even though the quality and performance are crap in new washers they still charge the same price as for the old school washers, even more in some cases. As always we pay more and get less for our money, a lot less. They used to sell reliability now they sell flashy computer boards sensors and plastic gears with no agitator to even turn the clothes over - I didn't fall for it for a second, I know one day my old GE will die, so after seeing the sea of junk theyre selling I bought a commercial duty Speed Queen and so glad I did, it performs like an old school washer even better and has the best warranty in the business.

That's a common remark that people make. That particular load was pretty big, but it was not typical of how we normally ran it, which was with whites separated from colored clothes, both usually in medium loads, and delicate stuff run by itself in small loads. The noises heard in the video did not begin on that day - they'd been going on and getting worse for some time, conveniently after the warranty expired, which was why we decided to record the video. We replaced that washer with another brand very soon after the video was posted. The "new" one has been doing fine since day 1. Cheers.

My board went bad approximately 3.5 years after purchase. So, I'm off to buy a new one since the repair is just a little less than a new one. My recommendation is to not purchase this one. The dryer is no better. Sounds like there are sneakers tumbling in there even if there is a light load.

I have heard Maytag is crap and so are the new brands of Whirlpool ..thank you for showing just how bad they are ......marked them off my list of what to buy ..Speed Queen is suppose to be the best , but I am still looking ..to find a washer and dryer that will last like they use too ! ..they cost way too much money to only give you a few years

I know this is an older video but I'll tell you what's wrong. These machines from Whirlpool are using a new design that eliminates a transmission. The motor is actually rotating back and forth to agitate. Look up " splutch " here on youtube to see your washer inside. ON the splutch are plastic teeth that connect the pulleys plastic teeth that are now ground down and are slipping. THESE MACHINES ARE CHEAP CHINESE JUNK. You have been overloading this machine. It can't take it. The only US made machine is Speed Queen and well worth the money.

Im so sick of seeing how many people are forced to spend their hard earned money on this poorly engineered shit. Speed Queen commercial duty washers are the only well made top loaders left. Maytag used to be a premiere brand, now its just a rebadged whirlpool and theyre crap as well. My 1977 GE filterflo lasted almost 40 years and still going, just started needing its first repairs this year and all it needed was a new pump as It had started to leak from the seal, but since it was almost 40 years old while I was in there I also replaced the belt, water control valve, and agitator mount. Sadly the outer tub has started to rust and someday I wont be able to fix it any more, so in anticipation of that day I went and bought a new commercial duty Speed Queen and im so glad I did, its proven itself to be a fine machine, designed to last 20 - 25 years depending on frequency of use, best warranty on the business - highly recommended.

+jellyperales Then the instruction inside the lid and in the manual are a joke. Matter of fact, the entire machine was a joke.

Just about any mechanical device can fail. Of of any run of machines that come off the assembly line, there are bound to be good ones and lemons. This one was a giant lemon. Glad yours is working.
