    This remarkable movie brought me back to our 2019 trip to Ipswich and subsequent British Museum visit to that shiny death mask. Bless Edith Pretty & Basil Brown. Little known stories continues to be a gift to this day. For that, ❤️ and thanks

    Videos like these always remind me how little book-learning most actors do, even on the topics they immerse themselves in emotionally and, well, act out, actors just don’t have much to say when it comes to history and science. The beginning is simply everyone saying the same thing...

    Apart from the wonderful filming, the way the dialogue starts before. or separately to, the action makes time seem to be fluid. The whole story is about time and the cultural arrogance that ignored the sophistication of previous cultures. Basil being 'unearthed' and the dead warrior on the boat are all interwoven references. Highly intelligent film with top class acting from all the cast.

    Brilliant performances all around, but not sure why a 35 year old was asked to play a magnificent woman, Edith Pretty, who was 56 in 1939. As good as Ms Mulligan is, a layer of verisimilitude and symbolic meaning was lost.

    • @richierich7229

      Nicole Kidman who is like 52 was originally attached to star.
      And I'm actually seriously asking. If she was 56, how did she have a kid that young?

    • @sisuriffs
      @sisuriffs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Edith Pretty was born August 1, 1883; her son, Robert Dempster Pretty, was born when Edith was 47. He was 12 when she died. Ms Kidman would have been good in the role. A movie that focused on time, place, death, and the continuity of life might have been even better featuring a remarkable woman who gave birth at a such a mature age. The fact of her being of the same generation as Basil Brown- who was actually a few years younger (born January 22, 1888) than she was-would have added even more dynamics to the relationship.

      You need a certain amount of star power to draw the public in, especially for a movie about archaeology, so they cast who is available and would suit the role for the budget they have. Ms Kidman was not available, and she is Australian. The accent might have defeated her.

      Apparently Nicole Kidman had to drop out less than 3 weeks before shooting was scheduled to commence.

    It's great how the female aktores keep their posh accents up even in the interviews?

    • @hupotasso4705

      I think Carey Mulligan and Lily James have posh accents in their “real” life.

    It's a good job there was "strong women" who were able to "put men right" in this story otherwise it would not make a very good 2021 film or it most likely wouldn't have even been made.
    Something about that makes me wanna puke.

    If this was 20 years ago it would be an Oscar winner for sure. However it was no woke enough in its cast and story for HollyWeird

    If the UK was less Latin and more Anglo-Saxon, it'd be better off. There, I've said it.
