Bennett is brilliant, without him there wouldn't have half as much information on Japanese sword culture available to non-Japanese enthusiasts !

Hey there ! :) im a beginner kendoka and im doing very wel at my dojo i really have a lot of talent for kendo, but i have a question is kendo actually effective in a real sword fight i think it is but there are even some kendoka that say its not and its all mental im now looking at kendo in a more spiritual way for example i am working in controlling my fear against more agressive opponents and last time i was completly in control against a experienced very agressive and fast opponent so i was very happy about that but it would also be very awesome if this technieques work in real life sword combat that would be awesome im just thinking all the time about it so i would be verry happy if somebody would give his opinion about this subject :) thanks

JINO JIKITOMO well, its not like it wont be efective, but if you ever need to fight with swords, against some other swordman... you will find out 2 things... first... bamboo blades does not feel like a steel blade... not the hit nor the handling... and two... you have to try and go side to side of your oponent, there is no point system... you have to kill to "win"(no one really wins a real fight, even if they dont get hit)... a martial artist said once... those who practice iaido and try kendo, find out their foot work is not enough, and they hit way too hard, those who practice kendo and try iaido, find out their technique is not as good with a steel sword, and their cuts ar too shallow... of course, it only works like that at the begining... once you have experiece, you will try a steel sword in kendo and you will know enough footwork in iaido... but the spirit of kendo is lost in competition... try to work in stances and techniques instead of competition, and you will have effective techniques for your very unlikely real sword fight...
keep practicing and dont let anyone stop you from getting better at it... just remember, the time of sword fighting is a thing of the past, the spirit of sword fighting, lives forever in the heart of the swordmen... even if you never have to use your sword.

Thanks for replying :) i am gonna quit kendo tough because i dont make any friends of my age. There is only one guy thats 18 years old and i am 16 but he doesnt wanna be my friend :( he is one of the best kendokas in our dojo. Im new in this city were i practice kendo so i dont know many people and the boys from my class are litle gangsters so i dont wanna be their friend so im gonna try judo altleast for getting some confidance or karate because i am very big and very strong but have very very very litle believe in my self, im always scared :( actually kinda stupid because im actually very close to perfcect let say im handsome tall strong athletic i played in the honor division of holland and i only played basketball for 1 year , my semiprossional dad trained me tough so i actually have nothing to be ashamed of but still im super scared of everybody :C sorry for my bad English

dont worry, english is not my first language anyways. as long as i understand what you say, its OK.
on the other hand... you should work on your ego a little bit, if they are really little gangster, they wont take no shit from anyone, so you should keep to yourself all of your glory, or they might think you are trying to "act it"... i made the mistake of telling a friend of min in higschool that i got a gold medal in a tournament... for few weeks, everybody wanted to fight with me, and they didnt stoped until i let one of them beat the crap out of me... had like 3 or 4 fights, and as i said, no one really wins a fight... not a serious fight like those anyway, a pint of blood in your hands, even if you didnt kill anybody, just a little blood on you, and you change... every fight i had, it ended worse than before, using furniture as weapons, groups of 2 or 3 against me(running like crazy while hitting every time i had a chance) in one of them i almost broke someones neck, and i knew i went to far... so the next time, i decided not to fight back, just looked at the guy, 2 heads taller than me, without fear, knowing he would kick my ass... made one step, and he said something about it been stupid and walked away... some time later... a rugbier wanted to fight with me, so i did few kicks to the air, hoping he wold backoff like the other one... he got my leg and throw me against the floor, and i then i was thinking "this is my chance, he wont beat me up too badly because there are lots of people here, and someone will jump in" and just like i said, a boxer came to split the fight, it was nice, didnt have another fight for years... at least not a stupid fight like those...
wow, i think it could by part of my biography, got a little to long didnt i?

:) im not trying to fight annybody its just pure for confidence but now i realise i can start again with the high level basketball for getting friends and confidence and a nice looking body too XP but i actually dont wanna quit kendo because its just so awesome since i was a child i was dreaming of being a warrior/hero.... so this is my sport but i have (1) chance to make a carreer in basketball basketball has more benefits than kendo but : friends, confidence, maybe a future job, nice body for the girls so i dont know kendo only gives me happiness and some self confidence and helps me control my emotions, but wont give me a future and wont give friends and wont give me a girlfriend :( but i think i like kendo more than basketball but i can have a pro basketball career and whe i retire continue with kendo ofcourse i dont know if all thats gonna happen but im 16 and this is my last chance to join the basketball club so i (SHOULD) take it in my opinion.
      What do you think ?
