That's what I've found as well for 90% of the work I do. The only exception is when I need to do really heavy hitting, I prefer a lower surface so I can use my maximum swing potential. That's why I'm aiming to have a variety of heights (or adjustable stands) in my shop as I plan it out.

imho 1-2 in higher anvil than usual is better for ergonomic technique, keeps you from overextending the elbow.
