Like you said, part of the beauty about Chekhov is that he leaves you so many ways to interpret it. When I read this story, the ending was what interested me: it leaves so much to the imagination! What will the characters choose? What choices do they even have? The man has discovered the ability to love more truly, but he chooses to selfishly complicate their lives dramatically with that discovery- rather than choosing to enrich the lives he has bound himself to. I don't read it for the purpose of judging him, but I can't help thinking that the hardest part of the "love story" has only just begun for this couple. I can't stop thinking about this one! And I love that Anna K may give us more to think about with this story. Stories about forbidden love always fascinate me- like The English Patient (movie version; didn't care for the book) :D SOOOO GOOD I love, too, what you said about how characters can't hide their dark sides in stories. Really, literature is just for the kind of people who enjoy that kind of human drama 😈
I didn't find the ending of this one ambiguous. You don't know what their plan is because they haven't really come up with one yet, but it seemed to me that Anna and Gurov decide to be together, even in the face of obstacles and complications. They will have a go at raising the dog together! 🐕 🙂
Every analysis and commentary must, imo, involve answering why the reviewer thinks it is an important work. In other words, it should not be assumed just because, for example, it appears on top-100 lists or because people say it's great.
Wonderful story! It was told so beautifully that it felt almost as if it was written with a brush on canvas. Definitely a few similarities between this story and Anna Karenina. 9/10!
Thanks for you video! I really loved it! But the voice of the guy in white is so so nasal that it becomes too distracting!!! I suggest he takes some speech lessons! Too nasal! Too distracting! I can’t focus on what he says!!

Yeah agreed. You don't chose to judge them but you're embroiled in it by nature of our own cultural norms. Looking forward to Anna K later this year!
