The Disney Cruise Line History

  • After a nearly decade long partnership with the Premier Cruise Line, Disney found themselves on their own in the cruise industry. They had tried to find new partnerships with Royal Caribbean and Carnival, but with both talks not going anywhere, Disney finally decided to just start their own cruise line, and so The Disney Cruise Line was born.

    In the late 1980s and 90s, when it came to entertainment and vacation ventures, Disney’s philosophy was that the best approach was to take a crash course in the industry in question and take a try at it themselves. They believed that their methodology to entertainment was unique, and that applying it to these new ventures allowed them to do it “the Disney way.”
    For reasons mentioned in the last video, which you should check out before watching this one, Disney simply couldn’t do that with cruises. But as their partnership options ran dry in 1994, Disney was in a much better financial situation compared to a decade prior when they first wanted to get into the industry. So they decided that it was finally time to do what they always did best, which was approach the venture “the Disney way.”
    Disney Cruise Vacations, as it was referred to at the time, was announced in May of 1994, but it would over four years before any ships would set sail. Disney decided that instead of buying second-hand ships which cruise lines would sometimes do to build a fleet, they would have two brand new ships built from scratch. Disney was prepared to pay four-hundred million dollars per ship, and they wanted to get off on the right foot so they hired industry veteran Arthur Rodney to lead the venture.
    The company would hire Italian shipbuilders Fincantieri to build the two ships while the design would be completed in Norway with the help of Walt Disney Imagineering...

    I went on a Disney cruise in about 2006, best vacation I ever had as a kid, and for years afterward I was really into all things boat-related. 12 years later here I am going to maritime school.

I later went on the Disney Dream in summer of 2018 for my brother’s graduation, all I did was meet characters, watch movies (including an early screening for The Incredibles 2), and relax on the pool playing South Park on my Nintendo Switch and reading The Killing Joke.

I also remember watching an episode of America’s Funniest Home Videos, where the host went on the Disney Dream. Another show I loved as a kid. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to go on one. Maybe someday...

    Thank you for covering the Disney cruise line’s history, Rob!! I love the Disney cruises and have been on the Magic and the Wonder for a combined number of 7 times over the span of almost 20 years. So I can say that yes, the Disney cruise is geared towards kids, teens, young adults (18-21), and older adults (22+). I’ve been to the Bahamas, the Panama canal/Mexico, Europe for a transatlantic cruise, a short west coast trip from California to Canada, and next summer I’ll be going on their Alaska cruise! I love them so much I even spent a whole summer building a replica of the Magic on Minecraft which you can check out on my channel.

    • @Riceball01
      @Riceball01 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been on the Disney cruise to Alaska, forget which ship though, and you're going to enjoy it. The only downside is that, when I went, each stop got progressively shorter and you spend an awful lot of time (a bit too much in my opinion) just sitting in front of a glacier. But Alaska is beautiful and even if you don't take an actual excursion there's still plenty to look at on your own around the ports. In Ketchakan (I think) I was able to visit a salmon farm and bald eagle sanctuary on my own just by wandering around in town and not a part of any excursion either from the ship or a vendor in town.

    I went on 2 Disney cruises as a kid, One of the Wonder, another on the Magic; both to Nassau around 2006 and 2007. I was in the kids section one year, and the teen group the next, both had their own activities each day and kept us busy when we were out at sea. Was an amazing experience and would 100% go again in the future!

    One thing I really love about the Disney company is how much love and care they put into their attractions. When I was a kid and we went to Disney world, it was the most amazing, magical experience ever, and they really impacted how I viewed the company, just based on the parks alone. The effort they put into everything speaks volumes. Sure, it's for the success of the company too, but it shows.

    My bucket list is to go on a Disney cruise. I live in Houston.TX so Galveston, TX has the Disney cruise in the early part of spring. Another Disney standard that the others strive for.

      Amy Daskilewicz its how resilient Disney is.. That's probably why. 😭😭 They go thru so many ups and downs and still make the magic happen.
