- This episode is about our 8 day tour of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. We started our journey from Bhimtal, then went to Mukteshwar, visited lmora, Kausani, Ranikehet and finally reached Nainital.

Following are the details of the places visited by us during the Nainital tour.
Ashok Hotel : This is a budget hotel in Nainital, it is located at a distance of about 400 meters from Naina lake.
Nainital has issues in parking, not many hotels have parking space, i was told by the manager of this hotel that they have some parking space available to accommodate about 15 to 20 vehicles.
Tariff: Rs 2200 for double occupancy, this is the off season tariff.

Anupam Restaurant - Wwe went to this restaurant to enjoy Kumaoni food but we were told that they do service it but as of now it is not available, so we had north Indian food here.

Cave Park (Garden) - This is a nice place, especially for children education on how caves look like.

Himalaya Darshan Point - This is a local sightseeing point of Nainital.

Naina Peak - This peak is also called as Cheena peak, trek from parking point to this peak takes little more than 1 hour, this trek is bit steep. If atmosphere is clear then you will see view of Nainital from this place.

Jungle Lore Birding Resort - This is a good accommodation near Nainital. This place Pangot is located at a distance of about 15 km from Nainital.
Tariff: Rs 3000 for double occupancy , without food. Though their package involves room tariff plus breakfast and dinner. Since we had dinner at their place and breakfast as well , we ended up paying Rs 5000.

Ashok Hotel - We requested the hotel owner to prepare some traditional food of Uttarakhand for us, usually they don’t have this food in their restaurant menu but it was made for us by the hotel owner’s wife on special request.

Thanks for the memories. I went to school in Nainital from 1951-1959, its changed a lot now. Amitabh Bachchan was in my school, a few classes below me, but I did not know him then. All the teachers, except the Hindi and Sitar teachers, were English, left over from the old days. The legendary Jim Corbett was still alive. There was a yacht club where the large playground is, and there was no big masjid, and hardly any cars. We used horses as public transport. In the night we heard jungle animals. I remember eating delicous aloo puri in the market. It was quite a journey, by rail, over 2 nights, from Poona to Nainital. I also remember the wonderful rhododendrons and lots of monkeys. In 1959 there suddenly appeared lots of Tibetans, owing to the chinese invasion of Tibet, most of them took work as coolies and palanquin bearers. It was a different world, better or worse, hard to tell. Well made travelogue, thank you.

Great write up sir, so you are an ex Sherwoodian. But Didn’t know this part of Tibetan. They are now extremely well established in Nainital. They have their own market named Tibetan Market. And get all the wonderful stuff reasonable and expensive both. Nainital infrastructures has extremely changed also if compared to your time. 😊
Yes, there wasn't these huge masjid and polluting animal.meat shops.near Naina devi .it's now becoming another srinagar...it's all gulf money flowing in....govt should look into this..
It is surprising that few people are saying that masjid was not there earlier. It can be checked through many books written about Nainital by local writers and on Wikipedia too that this masjid is standing there since late 19 th century, that’s another thing it has been renovated to its present shape and size over a period of time. However, it is good example that worship place of main four religions in India situated in close vicinity without any problem since long for which our Nainital is famous where all religion coexist in perfect harmony… Nainital is not only abode of Nature but also home of all religion and we are proud of it….

I have been visiting Kumaon at least 2 times a year for 12 years except for this year. I am missing the sights, sounds, smells, flora, fauna and majesty of the region. Uttarakhand series is the best series...a complete package where we can see mountains, rivers, bugyal(grassland),hill top view,lake view, traditional food,culture,etc. one more thing about food is that it is authentic and purely vegetarian which i like the most. I have been there four times. Fantastic views. But has become crowded. Got all sorts of food options from Tibetan momos at thandi road to North Indian kebabs. The veggie market beyond naina Mandir is very nice. Truly a travel destination

Having visited Nainital almost every year since 1988, my love for Nainital has only increased over the years! The charm of the lake, the Mall road, it's sights and hill-folk endears one to this lovely hill station!
Harish ji, all your episodes were informative and reprsented a veritable cultural treat, but this one has to be your recherche!
Momos at Sonam's, the thali at Shiva's, the dosa, aloo puri at the Saraswati restaurant, the fries and coffee at Cafe De Mall, the burger or tikki at China Town...are worth trying. Of course, you did the right thing by letting your hosts treat you to some lip-smacking Kumauni food!

What a nice lovely elderly couple ... Auntyji was feeling so proud describing the food of her people .... 'hamare yahan' was a term she used so often ... would love go up there and meet them sometime. Great job with the video as always ... the 'urban sprawl' around Nainital Lake was a little off-putting ... but overall another great video from Jim Corbett's happy hunting grounds - if I may call them that :) Kudos to you and your team!!
