The A10 warthog will never be retired. It's too good at what it was built for. Every man on the ground wants that angel on their shoulder. Long live the Warthog!!!
I almost pooped my pants while being a drunken soldier in Germany 1982 when an A10 flew over use at like 210 knots at treetop. Later I was at an airfield transmitting weather information to field armillary computers and I asked a pilot, " we can't here you until you pass" He replied, "if you are in a armored you are already dead before we pass".
1979,I was walking between buildings going to my next class at my middle school in Monument,Colorado. From behind me, I felt this wind like pressure wave hit me,and I spun around in response. Coming right over the building that was behind me came 3 A-10s in a triangle formation. They were maybe literally 30 feet above the building, and they were coming on. I and everybody else there never heard them coming, the sight of them was unreal. When they passed over that hairdryer scream engine sound hit us and everybody in sight hit the ground. Except for me,I just froze in step looking up at the front cannon going I'm so dead, lol None of us had seen the plane before. And having no time to respond and then they were just, gone in a blink. I fell in love with everything this machine was. I was coming from shop class when this happened, lol. I couldn't think of a way to describe it without sounding crazy,I kept thinking. Couple of years later I was at a night live fire exercise at Ft.Carson, and heard that cannon the first time. At night especially... its the scariest crazy sound youll ever hear. Love this plane!
I live in Monument. Spoke to an A-10 pilot in 1981 while training in Germany. Amazing before smart weapons. A-10 is one of my favorite weapons platforms.
That we have only had "jet" aircraft for approx 80 years, and the A-10 has been operational for 50 of those, as a frontline tactical aircraft; is truly astonishing.
I'm no engineer but upgrades make more sense than designing a new unit from scratch. Just look at the B52; upgrades after upgrades keep improving this aircaft flying well into the future. Keep the A10 flying!!! Bless our Vets
It’s just tradeoffs - what’s the most economical use of force? What constraints do you have to accept by not starting with a clean sheet? Let’s go ahead and look at the B52. It would be more economical to have 4 large engines than 8 smaller ones, but the wings are too close to the ground to allow clearance for bigger engines - so you’re stuck with 8. The last B52 was built over 60 years ago - they’ll eventually wear out. More maneuverable aircraft tend to wear faster as consistently pulling g’s stresses the airframe. I love the A10, it’s the one I’d want to fly if I was a pilot, BUT… it’s most effective in a permissive environment. It’s susceptible to MANPADS, let alone SAMs. It’s an impressive airframe, but if you ask the commanders on the ground they want more ISR and recognize CAS can be achieved and is often achieved with a combination of other airframes.
Reopen the production line and have fresh airframes to fix the problem of higher maintenence costs due to more maintenance hours spent on issues that arise from the wear and tear on airframes as they age from mission usage. I think these were like $10,000,000 a plane when they initially started production. While the latest avioncs, piolet equipment, data link hardware and such would lift the price a good amount, a doubling or even tripling of the price per unit would still allow for like three to five aircraft for every one of our newest planes in production, with the possibility of allies ordering planes and helping keep prices lower than initially projected. Except for a manufacturer wanting to get the cash and other support they receive to create and develop a new aircraft from scratch, everybody wins. The manufacturers don't exactly lose, either. They get paid for new orders as well as the efforts they put out in fleet upgrades, integrating new and upgraded equipment/ capabilities into the aircraft on the production lines and so forth. The key for the best economic outcome is in keeping a production line open and integrating upgrades for the plane as they are built, as that is way cheaper for both product procurement and version management, including bringing older versions up to date. The cost of opening up a closed line and remaking the necessary tooling, relocating stuff in the space where the line was at, retraining workers to replace ones that have moved on and so forth is incredibly prohibitive and is the reason that it was decided to not restart F-22 production. The low A-10 cost would make the reopening cost of the production line way more viable in this case, especially due to not having to recreate any stealth coating application facilities and the like that are very specific to the plane and the hazardous nature of those materials.
THE A-10 WARTHOG SAVES THE LIVES OF THE PILOTS, AND IS RELIEF SENT FROM THE SKY FOR DESPERATE MARINES ON THE GROUND, OR THE OTHER SOLDIERS IN BATTLE! I love 💕 this plane and also the F15 Eagle 🦅. Legendary planes in the sky saving lives and protecting countries! Thanks for the video 📸.
I was on the flight line the day the Very first A10 ever landed for Active duty. I worked for/with the 333rd and its commander. I fell in love the second I saw that plane pull up across the flight line from Base Ops.
Worked at Myrtle Beach state park back in 77...the air force base was pretty much across the street & the A-10s flew over quite often, especially during foul weather days...the Thunderbird flew over regularly also...both were always a treat to watch!...Go Airforce!
Hell yeah, went from Hog to Super Hog and ratcheted our enemies fear up another few notches. Many of us owe our lives and thanks to the pilots, crews and the Hog.
Boeing needs to unearth the Faichild-Republic plans and restart a few A-10 production lines with upgrades to avionics package and that Raytheon drone mothership package. The A-10Cs are bad to the bone!
If the A-10 made its debut in 1976, I was just about ready to get out of the 82nd AA. Sometimes it seems like a lifetime ago and other times, it seems like just yesterday.
Ask any Army or Marine grunt who has been supported by the A10 what they think about this aircraft. You will not hear anything but praise from those men.
I know the government has tried to cancel the A-10 several times but it's the epitome of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Sometimes engineers just get it right, if not darn near perfect. This is one of those rare examples.
Is this the same plane that the Air Force wanted to get rid of for years but has been stopped by Congress? The A10 is a guardian angel of ground troops who is always available when the troops are in a bad situation. Instead of spending billions on a new replacement why not build new ones with improvements built into the replacements.
Who says that Pentagon Generals are smarter than fifth graders? Just also look at the process for making 155 mm artillery shells. Three different locations and TNT from Japan!
The Air Force has attempted numerous times to 'retire' the A10. I believe their most recent attempt was when they determined that the F35 would replace it.
@@flick22601 dumbest idea ever.. they need to go to the drawing board and build ground attack plane with A-10s capability but with stealth added and maybe just a little bit more speed so that they can be a little harder to hit from ground-based systems not nothing super sonic but just a little bit more than it is now.
I am so happy to hear in the commentary that there is now more acceptance with the fact that the F-35 is not suitable as a replacement for the A-10. The air force has a lot on its plate related to various mission objectives, so I understand the desire for multi-mission capability. That being said I also understand that a ground troop support role is far from the center from any of the other mission requirements. My hope is that a dedicated close combat ground troop support aircraft will be its eventual replacement.
The problem is the Air Force doesn't want the A-10 and have been trying to retire it since 1989. It's not supersonic, stealthy or nuclear weapons capable. Even though I was a Marine if I ever met up with a A10 pilot somewhere I would buy them a beer just to say thanks for saving my ass.

Conversely, the F-22 requires about 4-5 hours of maintenance on the ground for every hour of operation in the air; and that's assuming nothing goes wrong...
I didn't care for the aspersions placed on the Skyraider. It was awesome, and saved my alpha many times. Kudos to the A-10.
Let's not forget that it's only as good as the pilot who flies it.
In Sept. at my home in cent. N.H. i hear the loud swooosh getting louder..Look up and scan and WOW 3 A-10 go overhead going west to east , towards Maine.. No mistake on the 10.. WOW.. NO fone on me ( no signal here in boonies) WOW..
It is the guardian angel of men on the ground. I curse those Air Force Generals that want to retire it. In my day, we had puff the majic dragon.
Nice video.
The Super A10's next upgrade is going to be the most perfect drone for close support. The missle capability will make the A10 dangerous to anything.
GE has certainly grown since I purchased my AC alarm clock for $3 many decades ago.
Or my washer,dryer,stove,refrigerator, record ❤player,cd player,x- ray machine,blood analyzers 😂
Im proud of our build.
If I was on the ground i'd want to hear that in the air.
As long as you’re not on the receiving end of those 30mm cannon rounds, otherwise you won’t be around for long.
It saved 1000s lives & many pilots from certain death. ..it deserves upgrade.
So at video time marker 2:51 they show a pile of scrap metal with no pieces larger than 3 centimeters in any dimension...
"Yep, that Tank is... ah... inoperable."
