    The first lineup was formed at DePaul University when Terry Kath would hang in the music department and met several members of the future band, and Terry brought them all together. He was the only member that didn't have a formal music education.

    Terry Kath is one of the most underrated guitarists/artists ever. He was fenomilal! So sad he never really got the notoriety he deserved. It seems that only through YT that he's finally getting some exposure to more people, which is great.

    There are 7 members: guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, and the 3 horns. Yes, that was an edit; this track is part of a larger suit called "Ballet for a Girl in Buchanon," running about 13 minutes and change. Another part of that suite is "Colour my World," with Terry Kath singing lead on that one as well. The single was an edit too, as the label took the end of the suite and spiced it onto the end of the guitar solo to make it more radio-friendly. I wasn't crazy about that, but the single was a hit.

    I'm sure I heard Chicago when I was a child but they splashed onto my consciousness with their trilogy of 80s songs (You're the Inspiration/Hard Habit to Break/Hard to Say I'm Sorry) and I became a fan. Those 80s songs will always be so nostalgic for me but I think I love their 70s stuff more. For those interested, there was a great documentary on Chicago done several years ago called "Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago" that can be caught on Pluto TV for those interested. Really worth the watch if you're a fan of this amazing band. I saw them in 2022 and though only three of the original members are still in the band, it's still a great concert if you get a chance to see them. Music, especially great music, is timeless.

    saw Chicago live in the 80's. fantastic. But, Chicago AND Earth, Wind and Fire did joint concerts, where they took turns but also played together at beginning and end. Two full bands with 'similar' music, 2 full horn sections, 2-4 keyboardists, 2-4 lead singers, 4 drummers/percussion, 2 apex bassists and 2 lead guitarists. etc. Together foing the greatest hits of both bands. Look.. Them.. Up!!

    Chicago is a big band - when I remember right, they moved from pure Jazz to their massive hit: If you leave me now (with a different formation - a kind of commercial 70's Doo-Wop).

    • @imweakfordeaky
      @imweakfordeaky 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They were not “pure Jazz”… they self-described as “A Rock Band with Horns”, but they certainly had elements of jazz sensibilities plus - Marching Band ! (And yes, even today some of their early hits still enjoy widespread appeal as marching band arrangements)

    I grew up just around the corner from DePaul University school of music in the Lakeview district of Chicago. Which is where Chicago basically formed. There was a hot dog joint called Demon Dogs which was owned by one of the bands managers. The walls were full of Chicago memorabilia, gold records etc. The band would pop in there quite often in the 70's.

    As a counterpoint to this song, Chicago's "Colour My World", though short, is a must hear. With an amazing flute intro and outro and heart felt vocal by Terry Kath, it is an under rated classic. It was also the theme song to my Jr Prom. Check it out! You won't be sorry!!

    This is from the album Chicago II, IMHO their best album ever. It's a concept album which was a thing back then. It's meant to be listened to all at once. There are so many songs on this album that were hits on the radio. The album is also notable for the many different and unique endings to the songs. This was a 2 LP album and one whole side is a suite of songs called Ballet for a Girl in Buchannen that is just fantastic. Robert Lamm wrote most of the songs for this group.

    Make Me Smile. Yes That was an edit. They cut out about 9 minutes of the song. Chicago never recorded a song called "Make Me Smile" They recorded a song called ... Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon ...that is over 12 minutes long. Make me Smile is a 3 minute cutout by the record company that is the beginning with the end spliced on. They also cut out another 3 minute part called Colour My World. The best version is ..."Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" live (Tanglewood 1970) just be sure it is 14 minutes to get the whole song. Terry was on FIRE in that concert. th-cam.com/video/iFWdkBvxDoA/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUsYmFsbGV0IGZvciBhIGdpcmwgaW4gYnVjaGFubm9uIGNoaWNhZ28gbGl2ZSA%3D

    That 1970 concert at Tanglewood is "out of sight", like, really groovy! The era of "Chicago Transit Authority" which this concert represents was the best period for the band. They were definitely firing on all cylinders in those days, unlike in later years.

    I know what it sounded like back when I listened to it on my stereo in the 70s. That feeling comes through in your video and I appreciate you reacting to this fun song. Another great band with an amazing horn section is Blood, Sweat, and Tears. They even use a Tuba for the bass part in a few songs. My suggestion would be “God Bless the Children.”

    I mentioned thus in a comment to your reaction to "25 or 6 to 4" that this was a song that was sung by the late great Terry Kath. His vocals are so soulful. This rendition seems shortened to me somehow. Next, try the song "Colour My World," also sung by Kath.

    That's Terry Kath in lead vocals and guitar, RIP. No he's not about to pass gas. What is actually doing was turning around to conduct the finale of the song. He is an underrated guitarist, but he was given one of the nicest compliments. Again, by design, the brass had their own sections to this song. Unfortunately because of his untimely passing, Terry Kath, the guitar player and singer departed from the band too soon. He gave the group that edginess with his voice and guitar. I think this might be my favorite of theirs. Saw them a number of times in the late 60's ,early 70's.

    This is part of a seven-movement suite titled "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon", written by trombone player James Pankow, appearing on Chicago's second album. James wrote it for a girl in West Virginia he was dating when he wrote the suite.
    The record label at the time of the release in 1970 joined together the opening and closing movements, "Make Me Smile" and "Now More Than Ever" (a reprise of "Make Me Smile") to release a single of "Make Me Smile" that sounded as a complete song. At 5:55 you noticed the video has an edit. Whoever made the concert video you watched did a similar edit to the show recorded at Tanglewood in 1970. You should listen to the entire suite, which also includes Terry Kath's lead vocal on "Colour My World": th-cam.com/video/xgM4xSIShYw/w-d-xo.html/

      That's only when they don't play the whole "Ballad for a Girl in Buchanan". I've seen in concert over 20 time from the early 70s until last year. Sometimes they play the whole Ballad. Other time they just play the 2 movements "Make Me Smile/ More Than Ever ". The AM single hit was even a more edited version of "Make Me Smile/ More Than Ever ", so it was short enough for AM radio play.
