Exactly! Especially Disturbed’s cover. It’s harsh, gloomy, doom. Pentatonix gives us a more cautious, hopeful warning. Even though, I wish we as a society, would have listened, or would listen still.

Thanks for the reaction, guys! I think that S&G sang it as a warning, Disturbed sang it as anger that the warning hadn't been heeded, PTX sang it as if there's still hope. That's my take on it.
It's been 11 years now since the Sing-Off and the group has made a commitment to another 10 years of sticking together. All of them also have solo projects as well, which helps give them outlets for their personal creativity and prevents stagnation within the group. They've done some really good originals, especially in the last two years. You should check some out...like: Coffee in Bed, Be My Eyes, , Love Again, Run To You.

I agree on the 3 versions. They are all "the best" for different things depending in your mood or general music taste. It's lovely that all of them exist. I can see that the disturbed version is spectacular, but dont enjoy it personally since that level of anger triggers my anxiety. At the level those 3 versions are created it's way more suvjective than some music. A bit futile to compare almost

Thank you for reacting to this beautiful Pentatonix video. Matt has been bass for Pentatonix since October 2017. Yes, they are on tour now. Tonight they just started the Australia/New Zealand leg of their world tour. Pentatonix has 2 albums of original songs and there are original songs sprinkled in albums with covers. I am familiar with the other 2 versions of the song that had been mentioned and I like the version by Pentatonix best. I am a big time Simon and Garfunkel fan.

Love the original song but I love PTX's cover and is by far the best cover I have heard - The up tempo does not distract from the words of the song or the feel of the song- It starts slow and gradually builds up -- I love Disturbed version too --

The song was not meant to be sad. It was a commentary and a warning about where society was heading. PTX just did it in a "powerful" way. Not celebratory or happy. Most people mistake that power with "up tempo cheerfulness". The style was more like "The Lion King" in it's ethnicity. Again not happy or cheerful. Just powerful.

Nice to hear from an OG Pentaholic rediscovering the group. After losing the record contract promised them on the SingOff, PTX built their TH-cam following mostly with a capella covers of current top-forty hits but they also had original songs on most of their albums. But I think it was their 2014 Christmas album that really gave them a popularity boost (they have issued a Christmas album every year since), and their 2015 album of original songs debuted at #1 on the US charts.

They were not seasoned when they did the Sing Off. They only got together the day before the Sing Off audition. They took all of the judges tips to heart and were much better by the end of the Sing Off season. They do covers and originals. Recommend them original, Happy Now.

Thanks for making me feel older than dirt! Grew up with S&G and your bit about 'oh Paul Simon' reminded me of the comment 'Oh McCartney- didn't he have a group called Wings?' 🤦‍♂ Liked the reaction. Hope to see more PTX from you. You will be flooded with info about the group from we Pentaholics. But just for general overview, the Trio, Scott, Mitch and Kirstie were only 19 when they won the Sing Off, Avi and Kevin only a few years older. They won a recording contract from the show only to have it dropped right after since new management couldn't see a future in a cappella. They went on TH-cam and blasted out their own niche. We think they don't so much covers as upgrades and they do have originals. I recommend PopSpring 2016 concert @ 15 minutes long with 3 originals and the Evolution of Michael Jackson. Very good audio and video. Enjoy the journey.

This is the song that introduced me to a cappela music. I was looking for the Disturbed version, didn't remember the name of the band and found this instead. It took me quite a while to realize that it was voices only. I couln't believe my eyes and ears and was all "no, this can't be". And PTX also brought me to reaction videos, which then led to Home Free, Voice Play (just to mention the best acappella groups out there), obviously to Ayreon and a ton of other music that I hadn't known before.

Simon and Garfunkel's rendition is like a warning for ignoring consequences, Disturbed's rendition is the hopeless failure of doing nothing, and the Pentatonics version is like a journey, with periodic enlightened decisions that give hope. It is the same words just given different affect treatment. It's all about what you do, not just what you say. How you react in life determines your eventual outcome. Keep positive!!!

Pentatonix brought an energy of hope to the lyrics. Disturbed interpreted the anger of the message and that we haven't fixed the problem yet. Simon & Garfunkel delivered the original message.

I happened to watch the sing off as well, and I think it's great that they have fulfilled their dream, and gotten as far as they did. This one was a bit too chaotic for me, somehow 'overloaded'. But i love their classics 'The Prayer', 'Hallelujah', 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

Appreciate your honest reaction to the song!
Personally, I don't think of the S&G version as "sad". "Somber" is the word I would use to best describe the original. There have been any number of comparisons between the 3 versions - S&G, Disturbed, and PTX. I don't normally like to compare different versions of a song because that almost inevitably leads to "A is better!" "No, B is better" "You don't know what you're talking about!", etc., etc. Someone came up with this description of the 3 versions well before me, but I tend to agree with it: S&G were sending out a warning, saying this is where we might be headed if we weren't careful. Disturbed was ANGRY that we hadn't paid enough attention to the warning. Pentatonix was saying that we've still got a chance to make changes, all hope isn't lost yet.

    • @ptxlvr7150
      @ptxlvr7150 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@tazzznphilly this description of the 3 songs I was going to post, so I'll just comment here. I see what your saying, but personally I hate the S&G version, it's too fast and choppy. I do want to apologize for any PTX fans that are buttheads about your opinion. We are not all that way. Please react to a couple more songs before you make up your mind about them. Oh, and Tazz, the big reason Avi actually left is his mom had some serious health problems, and he did not want to be on the far side of the world if something happened to her, and he was flying back and forth to help take care of her, and it was completely exhausting for him. So it was completely understandable why he left.

    • @beachbound4716

I agree with @ptxlvr7150. Ignore any hateful comments. They are a very small minority. I’ve been PTX about a year after the Sing Off. Been hooked ever since. People like different things. Some people might dislike something and hear later on and it grows on them, or maybe, it doesn’t. PTX has 20 million TH-cam subscribers. They travel the world touring meeting their international fans. The majority of us can listen to a TH-cam and not comment, or, we can respectfully disagree in the comments section . Those that take the negative route, are again the minority.
PTX members have always been humble, kind, incredibly down to earth, and welcoming to their fans. I believe that they would want us to respectfully interact with other people even if we disagree. Honestly, I don’t get why some fans can’t or choose not to.
PTX shows that people from diverse backgrounds CAN still get along, and even thrive despite those differences. So, guy on the right, just ignore the haters. They don’t represent the rest of us.

👉👉OG fan guy! Loved how much you enjoyed this I'm here for ALL you PTX and PTX related reactions!
    👉YES! they are on tour
👉YES! they have A LOT of ORIGINAL songs!
On The Sing Off they were QUITE YOUNG! The Trio (Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch) were 19 the beatboxer was 22 and the bass was 21. They were the youngest group.
👉👉For the friend in the green shirt, Yes it's a beautiful song sung beautifully by Simon and Garfunkel.
In my opinion Disturbed gave it a deeper, dark, lost, hopeless meaning, whereas
PENTATONIX version was more HOPEFUL. Listen to it again and words they emphasize on.
They were RIGHT ON POINT with the meaning of the lyrics.
It like PENTATONIX version there is light and hope at the end when Scott starts at the beginning it's dark, throughout the song you feel the song shift, it gets lighter. There IS hope and a light at the end of the tunnel.
and Disturbed is dark throughout, start to finish.
👉For the OG fan, They are THE ONLY A capella group to win Grammys and last month they made history again by getting a STAR on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame among many many accolades!!!

While your have the right to your opinion, my opinion is that you are dead wrong. If you listen to the song as PTX sings it, without instruments, they are not "upbeat", they are singing seriously and somberly. PTX does AMAZING things to old songs and new, adding their own spin to them. Just as you have your opinion, this is the way they wanted to handle this classic song. And seeing that they have numerous Grammy's and a Star, well...

Since four members of Pentatonix are now married or engaged and two of them have kids, they aren't touring as extensively as they used to. But the group did meet when they hit their 10th anniversary last year and agreed they wanted to continue. This year they've been touring Asia and Australia all of March. Then they take a break (so they can continue their Masked Singer competition?). Then all of May in Europe, June 3 in Iceland, another break, and the US in August and September. They seem to do most of their song writing and arrangements while they are touring, so we are hoping for some new videos and an album later this year.

While I love this version, I can understand what Philly is saying. When Simon and Garfunkel sang it, it was done in a manner that fit the time - laid back and kind of somber. When I heard Disturb's version it had a darker tone to it, but look at the world today so it made sense. I see this version as more of a "hopeful" version. The lyrics are the same, but the mannerism almost has a plea or longing tone to it. I love all three versions for different reasons Pentatonix has been singing together for 12 years now. Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie were all in choir together in high school and Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi (bass) joined the group 2 days before the show because at least 5 members were required. Avi left in 2017 because being on tour all the time was taking a toll on him and his mother was sick. nominated for 4 Grammys...winning 3 and recently got a star on the Walk of Fame. They have no bad songs...listen to Bohemian Rhapsody to be blown away, Imagine to be inspired, The Prayer for ridiculous talent and anything else they have done!!!! Is a deep rabbit hole and MOST Pentaholics (fan name) respect reactors opinions and turn out in masses!!

I, personally, don't think PTX covered this song specifically for the lyrics themselves, but what they, only being 5 people, can do to it to make it even more powerful, at the same time, giving us all that ear candy! My top 3 best things...1: Had my son 2: Had my daughter 3: Got to hear PTX perform this song live! Absolutely amazing!!!

Thanks for a great, open-minded reaction. I also loved S&G and had not heard of Disturbed until I saw the PTX cover and someone mentioned that one. I have since seen it and honestly, I didn't like it at all... Far too dark and hopeless a view. I particularly love PTX's more hopeful rendition of a great song. They are a group of people all about creating hope and connection in the world. Their cover of Imagine is fabulous as well as their fairly newly released song, Prayers For This World. Their originals, Love Me When I Don't, Sing, and Thank You all show that theme.

My children introduced me to PTX around 2012-13 (not sure exactly, but before _Radioactive)_ and like Tazzz I followed them until Avi left, then drifted away. Once I discovered Home Free and VoicePlay I had two a capella groups that were more in my wheelhouse, so I kind of didn't need a more poppy one, no matter how talented (which sounds harsh, but there is limited time to listen to any one kind of music). That said, I still enjoy them when I hear them. Regarding this song in particular I'm with Philly on tempo/tone, though - people have described S&G's original as a warning, and Disturbed's cover as anger at the warning having been ignored, but this doesn't seem to add anything to that discussion. It's a pleasing sound, which definitely has its own worth and it does get a thumbs up from me too, but it's a more cautious thumbs up than many reactions on your channel. I still look forward to hearing more!

So, this was okay, and definitely better than the original, which I’ve been obsessed with since I was a child. But doesn’t hold a candle to Disturb’s version. That could just be me, however, because David’s voice just melts my insides and leaves me a gooey mess on the floor. 😊

Good reaction. They are so good! I actually think their original songs (and yes they do have some amazing originals songs) are better than their covers and they're very under-rated. I personally like this better than the Disturbed version as I think it's more emotional. If you want to see something really incredible and moving watch their original Run to you, or their covers of Hallelujah or the Prayer. If you want to hear a bop watch their Grammy winning Daft Punk video. They won the sing-off in 2011 and it was an a cappella competition. They now have three Grammy's and a star (just a few weeks ago) on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Avi was with them from 2011-2017 and Matt has been with them since 2017 so has been with them as long as Avi. They are both phenomenal!

New subscriber, with the hope that you will continue with Pentatonix. Welcome back, Tazzz, there’s a lot to discover since 2017, and Philly, looks like you have much more to enjoy. Suggestions are their Daft Punk medley, which won them their first Grammy; Hallelujah, with God only knows how many hundreds of millions of views right now; and maybe Come Along for a fun, boppy song. My favorite originals are probably Coffee in Bed, Anchor and Love Me When I Don’t. Also of note, Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Can’t Hold Us, The Prayer, their ‘90s Dance Medley and Havana. I loved the banter between the two of you, so I look forward to seeing more of the channel. I respectively disagree with Philly’s idea of the original S&G version. It’s a lot more bouncy than I remembered. But I must have watched Disturbed’s version 12 times in a row when I first found it. It’s stunning. Peace …

Great reaction. The three in the middle knew each other since childhood. Avi, and the beatboxer, Kevin, joined them just a day or two before the Sing Off auditions over a decade ago, now. Yes, they are on tour right now, currently in Australia. The North American leg of the tour will be starting this Summer. I think of their extensive catalog in approximate thirds, covers (pentaholics prefer the term upgrades, lol), original music, and Christmas music. They have three Grammys, multi-platinum albums, literal billions of TH-cam views, and recently got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They sell out arenas all over the world and are by all measurez the biggest acapella band on Earth, though there are other very popular ones. I like to think about Sound of Silence this way, Simon and Garfukel was wistfully sad, Disturbed was dark and apocalyptic, Pentatonix was emerging from the darkness with earnest hope. I'm not 100% sure you both understood this was entirely vocal with beatboxing and body percussion. I hope you will entertain the idea of checking out more Pentatonix, and the side projects of each of the members including Avi. It's a very deep rabbit hole, and we love nothing more than to follow reactors down it.

I was around in '64 when Paul Simon wrote this song and he & Art were singing it(granted, I was 5 yrs old in '64😉) and I absolutely loved it! I used to sing it in school, I bought & played their albums("Bridge Over Troubled Water", OMG!) So I understand the "more chill", more melancholy sound of the original, I'd say.
I've listened to Disturbed's cover & wasn't crazy about it at first, it certainly didn't compare to Paul & Art! But then I listened to the Conan video of Disturbed singing it live on his show and I was really moved, I really loved it! Disturbed cover had a despairing, almost jaded, angry feel to it. Did I like it better than the original? No; the original is just that, the original.
That said, I absolutely love Pentatonix (fingers crossed that I get to see them Sept. 16th)! To me, their cover held all of the soberness, even reflected the despair of the situation that Paul alluded to way back in '64 & is even more relevant today, and yet, imo, along with all the gravity that Pentatonix' cover displayed, through their body language & voices there was a sense of pleading almost, a sense of "Pay attention! It's not too late, just take my hand.. just hear my voice, listen to my words.. just wake up and let's fix this while we still can..." Perhaps that pleading, if you will.. that hopefulness that it's not too late came across to the one gentleman as too "upbeat" in light of the lyrics? I don't know... What I can say, just speaking for myself is this~ While I will forever love the original, of all the covers I have ever heard, Pentatonix is by far The Best! 🩷 I appreciate both gentlemen's take on this song, even if I respectfully(tho' wholeheartedly) disagreed with the one on the right of my screen. Thanks for your reactions & now I will hit subscribe.😉

I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and never thought of this song as sad. Serious, definitely. In terms of tempo, I think the S&G version was actually a bit faster, with a driving guitar beat. However, you are not alone in preferring a simpler guitar-and-voices arrangement to the more complex Pentatonix sound. Pentatonix fans hear complaints all the time that their arrangements just aren't as heartfelt or emotional because of their complexity. It's just a matter of taste.

Uptempo ≠ cheerful. That being said, there is a distinct difference between all three.
I disagree that S&G intended it to be sad. I think it was more a narrative about where society is heading. Disturbed’s version was the heaviest one. I appreciate it, but personally that was the depressing version. It feels hopeless. The PTX version feels a little more powerful/ hopeful. Like we can change the narrative, we can change the path if we don’t like what we see. But, to me, hopeful is not the same as happy.

But then when they had a couple of video's go viral, (and I believe but could be wrong on this part I'm not sure which happened first, but I know it was after some viral video's proved they could make money) they won a Grammy, Sony used a division of Sony Music, SME to resign them.
