      Great reaction Bob. Completely agree. Voiceplay's cover is incredible. They just keep getting better and better with everything they put out...always respecting the original and then making it stellar...just mind blowing every time!! And, yeah LOVE Cesar's voice (SeeZer). Love it when he gets bigger sections to perform!

    The real shocker here is the arranger.... this one was done by Eli! We are rarely treated to one of his arrangements - he did Eleanor Rigby and occasionally does a short or collabs with Layne. But this project was his and I think it's absolutely stunning!

      Geoff said that they alternate arranging. It was on his interview with Peter Barber

    • @Aurora-cv5to
      @Aurora-cv5to ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daviddavison6391 They do, more or less. For example last year: Geoff did Dream On (4/8) then Layne & Eli Enemies (5/13), Rob Dietz arranged Good 4 You with Layne & Eli doing the rest (6/22), Then Layne did Running Up That Hill (7/22) and Geoff did I Can't Make You Love Me (8/22). They always "catch up" and it balances out in the end. I watch because 3 yrs ago I realized I could tell which one arranged w/o looking. I'm not a musician and I can't tell you how I can tell, but I can. So I started tracking who does what to see if I REALLY knew, or if I was just alternating. I know, nerd. Could be that they alternate more closely than it looks, but they don't always drop things in order. No idea. Rob does about one every year.

    What I really love and respect VoicePlay for is that they usually treat the original material with great care. Obviously, they have to put in some stuff to show off their voices since they're an a cappella band but they try to do it in the least interfering way possible. They keep the original key, most of the arrangement including instrumentals and bridges and stuff, and the overall feel of the song pretty much intact. Sometimes they make weird creative decisions like in the Seven Nation Army cover, but usually it's so good. I've been kinda sleeping on a cappella music for so long because of a few unfortunate misses I've heard from other bands where they completely messed up some great songs in order to show off. The key of the song is pretty important to me, like if someone moves a song up or down a semitone or two I usually feel OK about it, but classics are a big no-no since I remember the sound so well. Imagine someone singing an iconic song in a different key, it would destroy my brain. That's not the worst thing though. What I can't stand is someone screwing up the feel and soul of the song. I have heard some vocal band sing a song I knew that was initially in pensive Cm but they were singing it in like D9 or some major jazzy harmony like that, which rendered the entire point of the song pretty much useless. I could not believe my ears when I heard the lyrics. Some famous bands like Pentatonix or others tend to adjust the key so that they could hit the notes easily. Thank God these guys don't have this issue since every one of them has an amazing range. Geoff can go as low as a reasonable arrangement would require, mans basically hits every note on the left two-thirds of a grand piano. Eli, Cesar, and featured people can go into really high octaves if needed, Eli's belting never ceases to amaze me. He could probably nail Chandelier in rock vocals. Basically, my point is they're an amazing band

    A note: Cesa is usually pronounced as in Julius Cesar. (Seize 'er) As they say, to perform with VoicePlay you have to be more than "just" a great singer. The abiliity to have crazy fun, to bring the emotions, to fit in, all that is part of it.

Quite amazing vocal talent! On the other hand, although the music is great, it just won’t reach my playlist. I’m curious how you feel about their more rock covers? I can understand if they are not ‘rock’ enough or maybe what you enjoy most in rock are the instrumentals? Just interested as to if you’ve heard some of them or missed seeing them?

    • @guygourley2411
      @guygourley2411 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hwyla4416 I have a wide range of music I listen to, but vocalist type of songs are just not too high on my list. In jazz I virtually always prefer instrumental songs, and in rock/metal the vocalist is important and can make/break the band for me, but I also like the instrumental sections. Up until Bob did a reaction to Voiceplay I had never heard of the group. They are pretty amazing and I have enjoyed the covers (in fact, this is probably the first time I actually could hear the lyrics in "Creep"), but I generally listen to faster paced music. Not a fan of Dimash but I can appreciate his voice, and thought The Horses by Home Free was good, but just not the style I put on my personal play list, which these days is pretty much dominate with Japanese rock/metal.
