This is one of the most helpful posts on TH-cam. I just adjusted the chain on my 2018 MT-09, and it triggered the check engine light ( I ran the bike while on the rear stand ). Now I can resolve this issue, thanks to this great post.

Read the code first so you know what the Actual problem was that was turning on the check engine light then look up the code . Fix the problem related to the code or erase the code if it was a Nuisance code.

Thanks for the video buddy, I had the same problem but thanks to you it's all sorted now! Incidentally, the fault code was speed sensor. It happened after the technical inspection you have to do here in Spain. I think the guy played around with the traction control whilst doing the checks. Anyway all is good now! Thanks again, ride safe.

REAR AXLE NUT TORQUE MIGHT BE 140 or 108,but I would check with anyone who services these bikes to see.Choice two contact YAMAHA direct. But if all else fails here is my OLD SCHOOL way of thinking, tighten to 108,ride the bike a tank of gas,see if torque is same at end of the ride.MY R1 HAS NEVER LOOSENED ANYTHING IN 36,000 MILES but as an OLD SCHOOL GUY I check it regularly. My go to guy in the past has been KENNY AUGUSTINE who recently passed away. Also be sure its FOOT POUND not some other measure like NEWTON METERS or whatever. My R1 manual is all in foot pounds.

Mine cleared without "the meter" or "the wire" by which I assume you mean OBD2 and motorcycle adaptor...my bike is not the identical bike but the next gen of same model My 2022 tracer 9gt this morning shut down some functions like quick shifter than check engine light came on....so I stopped the bike noting the temp was only 175ish (F) the oil level and coloration was fine and no other warning lights like oil pressure. I had blown the stupid 2 amp fuse for the power outlet yesterday and replaced it with spare 2 amp and no problems riding the bike first thing this am it was not until after I stopped and killed the engine waiting for another rider....I think I had left the key on though not sure. anyway I popped the seat to look at the fuse box in case I had somehow managed to mess something up yesterday but all was secure and engine light stayed on....so I just let the bike sit for a half hour or ? idk as I was yaking away with some other riders where I had stopped in the shade finally decided to ride the 6 miles home at the bottom of the mountain I planned to mostly coast down but when I started the bike to leave? Everything was back no engine light all the functions returned....weird? No OBD2 used it self healed
Bike has just over 1000miles anyone know what is up with that?? I suggest messing with it a bit and seeing if it clears itself....which perhpas newer bike self reset and previous gens dont?

I fincally just today recieved the adaptor I had ordered (the red connector one) and plugged in my OBD2 scanner to see if it threw a code when I had that check engine light and various issues ...there was just one code stored I believe it was P1004 which I cleared even though the check engine light and issues have never returned since last month abou or so. Wierd anyone elese experience this on 2021/2022 MT90 / Tracer 9gt?

Great video , going off topic a little here but i really need some help from a guy with experience , basically I have the new r1 and I'm having trouble with the rear axle nut tourqe that's in the service manual that's 140flbs of tourqe which is really high in my opinion , I've herd some horror stories of bending and breaking things at those specs , I thought the 2014 model was high at 108flbs but now I look back it seems reasonable , looking at all the parts through those years and they look identical so I'm very reluctant to follow the new factory specs, I think it would be safer to stick to the old tourqe specs of 108flbs, would you agree that 140flbs is a bit excessive, I just really don't want to damage anything so what would you suggest and is there a rule you follow when tightening rear axle nut , and do you think Yamaha have made an error based on all the damage poeple are doing following the new factory specs, thanks, any replies are greatly appreciated

    • @dougiequick1

starting in 2021 I believe it is 6pins the red connector there obviously are multi generations of the MT09 so you cant ask intelligently without including the year/gen...just saying

I have 2020 MT-09. Ignition was left on over night and killed the battery, and now the check engine light is on. I jump started the bike and rode around for a few hours to recharge the battery, and now the battery is fine, the bike starts right up. I disconnected the battery overnight, but that did not clear the Check Engine light. Is there a way to reset it without buying the OBD tool?

Thanks for the info, Windy. I just used this information to reset the check engine light on my 2017 FZ-09. The light was on because I'm dumb so let's not get into that. I bought the same scanner from Amazon B07VDKGK4T but wasn't sure which cable so I picked up Amazon B088TLYHQT. Both were in stock and arrived in two days. It took more time to take the seat off than to clear the codes. Total cost around $40 so probably worth it versus taking it to a shop.
