Wow! Superb interview by Margaret Brennan. The responses of former SoD Robert Gates rang with a clarity and insight seldom seen. Thank you both.

Trump and his associates were over-reaching or unrealistic in the trade negotiations with China. No deal, i.e., tariffs war deems to harming the U.S. consumers, too. We, badly, need experts and cool brains in the future trade talks, if any.

It seems as though the goal of the interview is to find a way to get Gates to criticize Trump in as many ways as possible.
    Also, Margaret nearly endorsed Biden.

@@brianclarke4831, I always measure wisdom, justice, judgment, equity comparatively vis a vis each other.
Maybe in this interview, equity does no bear much, I would have to think.
He is pretty much in the field of wisdom with justice, and judgment, maybe equity is also in the room, perhaps in the closet.

I guess in today's context it's totally not shocking to see a journalist baiting and cuing the person into saying something bad about the POTUS (but failing miserably in the effort). However, it's totally a charm to see a person like Gates who stands true to his values even though it's really cool today to bash Trump rather than talk about specific policy differences.

Not only does she shows hatred for Trump but she tried hard to get him say negative words about him. Very aggressive and unprofessional.

  • @ruthdepew7212

Gates continues to hold the two totally erroneous suppositions that Trump is both sane and well intentioned, and this taints most of what he says. I do, however, agree that both Biden and Bernie are much too old to take on the most aging job on the planet. Supporting either for the presidency is a cruel death wish.

I think the issues between the USA and China, are not really issues. I would even use the expression spurious. The USA, Germany, Holland, France, UK, or any other industrialized nation know-how you can think of is these days i the hands of China, and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is in full-force. The two countries are just cooling off a bit and enjoying the fruits of well played decisions in the past. Industry, super-computing, genetics, you name it, all nations can have their issues, but discrete, some of those issues may depend on the bias of any other administration. There is no going back!

Maybe this particular forum from FtN isn*t a perfect one, but it*s Mother*s Day and I*ll let Margaret hear this. My response to the tactics of Trump (and many of his subordinates) is to stay the course and keep your focus. Keep your OWN focus. Respond to bullies by NOT responding to them. React by not reacting to them. It*s a fools game. Don*t play in their playground. Ignore bullies and they will eventually go away.

The trade tariffs can only play a role in delivery times, the trade train is in motion and set to arrive on time soon or later.

The most fundamental issue is the difference in political systems between the U.S. and China. The U.S. is entangled in constant partisan fights, while China is able to achieve specific goals by mobilizing all its resources, including financial resource, human resource, land ownership, and homogeneous public opinions, etc...

  • @antoniocalhau4711

In the military field I can only say that the USA must integrate even further with other militaries starting with those of NATO nations, this has happened in the technology, and equipment, but not in human resources, I mean more in operations and training, for example language and other basic skills, these aspects have been overlooked!

  • @antoniocalhau4711

What Robert Gates is talking of about trade with China, was said before about Japan, and now Japan does everything in the USA and vice versa. These days countries negotiate more on a need to go basis, the low hanging fruit days are over!

I was here and it came to my mind, North Korea will have to give up its nuclear weapons, because they have an energy constriction, and so they need nuclear power. Even with that regime, they could probably open more culturally, and integrate more broadly with the rest of the world.
