Welcome to this weeks walk along the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway. Great Western Railway ran trains along this line as far south as Winchester where London South Western Railway took over. In this weeks family friendly video we take a look at a section close to Whitchurch including a number of tunnels we didn't know existed. Are they tunnels?? You decide!

Ahh, thank you for the memories. I cycled to Tufton viaduct and to Larksbarrow cutting nearly 30 years ago now... The cutting wasn't as overgrown as that, I do have a photo but can't share it via comments. It's (a) so peaceful and you can well imagine poor old 76017 running away down the 1 in 106 gradient with her load of bricks and timber in 1954 (she came to grief at the end of the passing loop, south of Whitchurch station); but (b) such a pity that the cutting comes to a sticky end where the A34 dual carriageway then steals the alignment.

I really enjoy studying the Masonry details in your videos. At 7:45 I was fascinated by what looks like a brick "ladder" on the left side of the portal. Apparently there was to be a retaining wall that would "key" into the slots. The alternative was to build that curious stone wall and backfill with dirt (A lot cheaper, but the soil washed out and the stones began to fall out). At 7:50 there is a retaining wall on the right side, but it stops a couple of feet short of the top. Vacant slots are visible (Maybe they were trying to save bricks).

    Great video again
1 Paul's favourite video is the Sapperton Canal Tunnel video.
2 If you want to see a quirky tunnel - Google 'Norfolk's on Railway Tunnel'. It is on the 15inch Bure Valley line. It goes under a bypass.
3 I'd love to know how the tunnels were constructed. The way I understand brick arches were built was as follows. They put a temporary wooden frame up. They laid the bricks on top of the frame and obviously removed the frame when complete. If this method was employed here I believe they must of removed a section of the embankment then constructed the tunnel before replacing the top of the embankment. Any clues?

4:19 - a skew bridge or skew arch (more precisely a helicoid skew arch). It's a construction technique that had to be developed in the 19th century precisely because railways couldn't be aligned to cross roads, rivers and canals at a right angle.

    • @themistocleszammit
      @themistocleszammit 3 ปีที่แล้ว

...and the bricks are angled like that on a skew bridge because if they were straight and level the force of the train passing overhead would tend to make the courses of brick slide over one another. Having them at an angel means the the force is normal to the courses of bricks.

This is an excellent idea and much appreciated. The architecture and masonry of the tunnels shows how much work and engineer went into them. I wish you would spend more time looking at the structures. Here in my part of the East Coast of USA we don’t have many of these structures. Thank you for showing us some beautiful examples.

The lost Canal Tunnel in the Woods. Sapperton about 17 minutes and 59 seconds long, published on TH-cam 16th June 2020 and if you a Patreon member you can watch the 6 minute unedited version of when they send the GoPro down a shaft...
Sorry wanted to much as much detail as I could lol There was something that I discovered last year that I felt ashamed of. Near a Church in Brereton, Rugeley there used to be a subway going under the road and I've been walking the subway a few times but it now filled in, was filled in ages ago but last year purchased a book on the Brereton Collieries and there used to be a tramway from the pit to the Trent and Mersey Canal, but what I didn't know was that subway which is now filled in used to be part of the tramway (face palm) but this was a great video indeed. Loved it!

A tunnel is a tunnel if it is bored through the ground. It doesn't matter about its length. If the item is a cutting, which is then covered over, then technically it is not a tunnel. The apparent tunnel next to Kemble station is a cut and cover rather than a tunnel.

Another great video with a bit of history and the lesser trodden paths. It does give rise to the question of just how many older/abandoned railways there are out there, in times before metalled roads and how many could be brought back into guided rail and community Cycle and Walks. I suggest this as it's a way of collecting the litter you pick up and 'warden' these by-ways again. Great stuff. I will also answer that Pauls favourite video is "The Lost Canal Tunnel In The Woods at Sapperston/The Deep Hole In The Woods" video.
Thanks for the great Out-Door walks away from the crowds and having us along too. Keep Well now. Cheers!

Hi Rebecca and Paul. Interesting & informative video. I think your favourite tunnel Paul is the Sapperton Canal Tunnel. I thoroughly enjoyed Rebecca's singing in the early part of this video. Yes Rebecca length does matter, in railway terms I believe a tunnel has a specific minimum otherwise its called a bridge or 'creep'. The bridge on a slant has a brick lining which again I believe is called 'skew lining'. If you had gone south of Port Mulgrave on your Yorkshire adventure, there is an excellent example of this brick lining on the outskirts of Scarborough which you drive through. Keep up the good work, stay safe. X.

Love you to come and walk the Bristol and North Somerset railway. We live in Clutton where an attempt was made to restore the station platforms etc. The platforms can still be seen if you know where to look along with the old mine branch which apparently used to be a gravity line. Be great to see you guys here. Keep up the great videos. Love them

It's called a skew built bridge Paul, and they really show the skill of the builder as some of them are seamless (Thurgoland road bridge on the closed Woodhead route is one spectacular example). I noticed this one wasn't, but still magnificent non the less.
Oh and Paul’s favorite video is, “The Lost canal in the woods. Sapperton”.
