Things that have helped me a lot: 1. Enter into the airplane with headphones… playing music… relaxing music, or a White noise songs(these ones work GREAT). 2. Wear a sleep mask ! 3. Always remember… why the people around you are very pleased… if they can, I can. 4. Carry on things that distract you: movies, videos, games, books, etc… have a busy mind is KEY. 5. Try to sleep the more time possible! 6. Avoid be aware of tour surroundings… focus in yourself… don’t pay attention in your things around you.
I have a huge fear of flying. I flew a lot by myself. But now for some reason for the last 10 years I am terrified of flying. I am extremely claustrophobic. I feel like once a plane takes off I can’t go outside. That’s the main thing like it’s stuck in my head. I always feel like I need to be in control. Just like driving a car. Because I know if anything happens to me I can just pull my Car over and take a deep breath and take a quick walk. Is there anything that you can do for me sir? I’m done taking Xanax on flights. I just got back from a trip from Mexico. And a four hour flight from Mexico to Seattle was very difficult but I was very drugged up at the same time. I don’t wanna be flying when I have kids and I think it’s very embarrassing for me. Please help
Hi, thanks for commenting. I'm not really qualified to give you advice specifically, I'm not a trained therapist, just a guy who goes through a similar experience. I can tell you my own experiences though. I was also a calm flyer for many years, and developed a fear out of the blue after I had kids. I don't know if it was becoming a father that changed things, or just coincidence, but I can relate to your story. I have found that trying to take control of small things (being able to get up from my seat to go to the bathroom, choosing what music to listen to, even something as simple as choosing how far back to recline my seat) all help. Drugs help take the edge off, but the bigger thing for me is combining lots of approaches together. I've also found that noise cancelling headphones help a bit as well.
I feel for you!!! But you have to keep trying and never give into fear. I’ve been dealing with anxiety since high school and I’ve learned that I have to choose to fight it or it will destroy me. Therapy and medication helps but we must do the work of changing our Making up our minds and choosing to keep trying. I just flew 2x this year and was super anxious the first time but did better the second time. I’m not gonna lie I was terrified but I REFUSED to run away. It took me a while to get to get to this point but I’m here 🙌🏾. I still get Anxiety attacks but I’m learning to fight smarter by saying “no” when the thought I’m trapped or what if’s come up. After a while it worked and I was able to actually take out my headphones and talk. I don’t know if your spiritual or not but this is what brought me peace, I kept remembering and meditating on “ he will never leave me” And I just focused on the fact that god will comfort me. Sorry for the long comment . the battle of the mind is serious work 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I’ve had the same feeling. What helps me is working out regularly. Frequent exercising calms the mind. When your mind is constantly @ ease, it builds a pattern. It also helps to fly frequently and if you can’t watch videos of full flights here. The more you know about something the more you feel in control. Just my two cents. Hopefully it can provide you some help.
I turn on the ac fan/vent to blow on face and upper body on max setting till i get cool or cold makes me feel that im outside and convincing myself that this air is from outside= hence there is no difference staying inside or being out. Plus i tell myself that outside might be dangerous so I rather stay in.
I am probably a little different than most. I actually prefer the very very back seat and it has to be an aisle seat. I suffer from generalized anxiety and I can get panic attacks in airplanes which absolutely sucks. I prefer the rear seat because it is closest to the bathroom in case I need to escape and put water on my face or anything else. And I prefer it being in the aisle that way I don't disturb anybody and can get up as many times as I need to. The rear of the plane if you've ever noticed in plane crashes this, is the only piece of the plane that is ever remained intact so I figured that to be the safest place. Whether or not there is science behind that I don't know but I do trust what my eyes see and it's always the tail that seems to be intact
I actually do not fear flying, nor do I feel claustrophobia when in the air. I feel it when the plane pulls into the gate, the airplane is turned off, we are waiting for the jet bridge and door to open, along with everybody suddenly standing up just waiting and crowding around. It is rough until I see heads moving towards the door. Advice?? Thanks
I can only really relate my own experiences, but I have had that same sensation in the past. It's helpful for me to just stay seated and not feel like I need to rush out of the plane. That helps me not feel as trapped ,as I know that eventually the plane will empty.
I'm 45, stuck on an Island and cannot fly anywhere!! :( Never been anywhere. I found this clip frightening let alone be on one. Guess I have to wait for an open plane someday!!
For this it helped me to look at a world map with all the airports on it that exists! There are only very few places a plane is more than 1h away from the next airport, in a medical emergency they can and will land the plane at the next possible place!
Not yet, but it's a good suggestion and something I've got on my list to do (even have a CFI in mind). My initial thoughts are that I'd like to keep reducing my phobia on commercial flights before I attempt a flight in a smaller plane, but who knows that can change. Whenever I actually do it though, and assuming I'm allowed, I'm hoping to film my experience and put it on TH-cam for you all :)
I would never fly in a puddle jumper. If it has a propeller, it's a hard no for me. Just look at the statistics of plane crashes. Most of the planes that go down are those types of planes.
I always feel like I can't breathe properly inside the plane because the oxygen level inside the plane is so low... It is very important for me to go abroad but I am very scared to get on the plane because of this idea.. What should I do now? I am a claustrophobic person
I can’t tell you what to do, I can only relate what has worked for me and hopefully some of those things can help others. I start with (before my flight) reminding myself that my fears are not rational or going to happen. Then during the flight I constantly repeat phrases that I’ve practiced before to remind me that everything is normal and ok. It helped me a lot to talk to people about my fears and to also learn about planes and the ways that they are safe.

Im.not really scared of the flight. I have health anxiety and im afraid to have a medical issue in the air
Agreed.

have you tried taking a discovery flight in a light aircraft? it doesnt cost that much

There are enough oxygen in the plane.
It's about in our heads.....
So let's take a plane and everything will be easy......
They even have extra oxygen bottles on board in case someone needs it. Think of that helps me a little
Anyone in Southern cali want to take a flight together and overcome our fear? I haven’t been in a plane in over 5 years now :(
How much did you get your VR headset for? Looking into doing X-Plane with it so i can touch all the buttons and stuff
I got the oculus rift in January of 2018 for about $350 USD. I highly recommend flying in VR, it's a ton of fun
