Just have to keep positive! Also I stopped flying about 20 years ago due to inner ear problems - then 9/11 happened - this coming weekend will be my first time back up - I have 4 short to and from flights - fingers crossed!

What sucks is being kinda afraid of flying but having a love for traveling. So I just deal with it. I know it’s super safe, but there’s something about the mechanical marvel of planes in comparison to cars, where a car is just wheels a plane is super heavy and fighting gravity.
For reference, I also have a fear of heights lol. But will not stop traveling

Look at it from the other side: instead of the mechanical marvel, think of the human factor. Planes are flown by extremely talented and heavily trained pilots, while virtually anyone can drive a car... and you share the road with hundreds of these "anyones" every time that you take a ride.

I’m fortunate to be able to go on cruises but I only go on the ones that depart from my home country (UK) and not the ones where you have to take a flight first. It is somewhat limiting but I’m grateful I at least get to travel abroad still.
I’ve faced my fear 3 times with EasyJet’s Experience Flights (after not getting on a plane for 17 years!!) and have experienced a little improvement, but still not enough that I feel ready to get on a normal flight . I really hope and intend to overcome this one day. ✈️

The fear mainly derives from the fact that if ur plane starts going down, Ur chances of survival are extremely slim. Not all car crashes are fatal. Secondly, Its the psychological 'What if' that we constantly think to ourselves. Flying is not a everyday thing so Its easier to link danger with it. Its exactly the same as a roller coaster. People are scared of them because they think about dying, Otherwise it would just be pure enjoyment. Nobody gets in their car and thinks about a car crash.

I hate when people say, “it’s safer to be in a plane than it is in a car”. Because to us who are fearful of flying, that doesn’t make a difference. In fact, I feel much much safer in a car because I have control. I can turn right or left. I can give it gas, hit the brakes or I can back up. AND I’m grounded. I have four wheels on the ground. While I’m up in the air, I have ZERO CONTROL. I also have to share a bathroom with tons of strangers, sit very close to strangers, and suffer from an anxiety attack due to claustrophobia. The thought of a terrorist attacking the plane, or perhaps the pilot planning to commit suicide and take the plane down with them is enough to make me not want to fly point-blank, PERIOD. Because that has happened. That’s the reality. There are so many different thoughts that go through your head being on a plane opposed to just driving down the street in your car. Again once a plane goes down or even skids off the runway, chances are you’re not going to survive. I have tried everything in the past 40 years of my life to get over this fear and phobia. I just flew again this past weekend and the same fears came to my head. I can’t watch a movie or read a book due to motion sickness. Listening to music doesn’t help because I’m completely distracted by the fact that I am 30,000 feet above the air and hopefully the noises that I hear are not detrimental. and turbulence is a whole other nightmare. Again, some people have claustrophobia and “AEROPHOBIA” and it’s very very, very serious 😢

Strange tip: if you’re afraid of flying, watch air crash investigation. If you watch enough of them you really get the idea that planes are so incredibly safe. Air Crash Investigation is the reason I was willing to get on a plane again after a particular death that made me distrustful of the people in the airline industry. That show is 20+ seasons of people talking about how they take my safety seriously, and thanks to them I flew again a couple of months ago. The episodes can be quite graphic, though, so viewer discretion is recommended.

For me personally a fear of flying is not based on how rare of an event it is. It’s due to how horrific and terrifying that death would be if I happened to hit that bad luck lottery. Crashing a car it all happens so fast it’s over before you really know it. But a terrorist attack where the plane is hijacked or a pilot decides to crash the plane would be so horrendous.

Also because you see a lot on the news how they need to cut the budget. So they're trying to save on fuel etc. I heard pilots refuse to fly at some budget company's because they thought it was too unsafe with the minimal fuel on board. This is what keeps me awake at night. The lack of maintenance on the aircraft. I am flying in August and I am terrified.

This used to be the cause of most crashes in the 70s & 80s, it's actually less likely over the last few decades as regulations are tighter than ever before. Mind you that statistic in this video about the likelihood includes those issues, there are more flights than ever before but less crashes over the last decade or so. Airlines are extremely precautionary, if a takeoff has something not quite right it'll be aborted, planes can stop their roll before their Vmax velocity. The captains and such do checklists, and there's quite a lot of redundancy, planes having multiple electronics systems, backup methods of measuring altitude. Even in some of the crashes I've seen, where pilots were at fault, it was sometimes their 20,000th hour flying without incident.

I have a terrible fear of flying. I have a business trip in a few weeks and the anxiety is overwhelming to the point where I I'm getting diarrhea and heart palpitations. To make it worse, I have 2 connecting flights on the way home, and one of those flights is on one of those small regional jets. I know the odds are in my favor and the probability of anything bad happening is incredibly slim, but I just can't shake the fear that no matter how "good" the odds are, I AWAYS feel that MY flight will be that fatal one out of millions. I'm so tired of feeling this way. There's so many places I want to see that require flying. I know I can't predict the future and nothing is certain, but I don't wanna die from flying. I just wanna be able to enjoy flying, whether it be domestic or international, knowing that I'm gonna be ok and nothing bad will happen and that it's not my fate to die in a plane crash/explosion/incident/etc. I do wanna sign up for the SOAR courses but I can't afford it at the moment.

Thanks, I truly appreciate the reply! My fear of flying is very embarrassing because I feel like a burden, especially to my wife. There's so many places we talk about wanting to visit around the world, but the though of airline travel frightens me. For example, next year she wants to visit Hawaii for her birthday. We haven't even booked the tickets yet and already, just the thought is giving me anxiety. To make it worse, when we arrive to Oahu, I can't even enjoy the vacation because all I'll be thinking about is the return flight home. My wife jokes around with me because I ride motorcycles for a living, which is obviously FAR more dangerous than flying. But whenever I fly, I can't shake the feeling that each flight could potentially be my last. My business trip is 3 weeks away and my anxiety so high right now.

@@asdf-zx6sx With all of the aggregate data available, you can (with some very large numbers) calculate the Relative Risk of one hour of flying. You can take that RR paired with the number of hours a person spends on an airplane in their lives, and determine their overall risk factor of being involved in an aviation related incident. Translation? The more hours you spend in an airplane, the more at risk you are. So, someone who spends 40,000 hours of their life flying, or around 850 hours (35 full days) per year of a career in an airplane, is far more at risk than the average traveler. The fact that most pilots spend their entire careers without experiencing a major incident, despite their drastically higher exposure to the risk factor, speaks volumes. That was his argument, which is a totally valid one.
Ironically, you could do the exact same thing with your grandfather and his smoking, by determining the RR of serious illness per cigarette smoked. The difference is, the RR is drastically higher, making smoking a significantly riskier proposition. Hence why using an example like that to discredit the OP’s argument is kinda stupid.

@@s4aviator804 Very well explained, thank you!
Its about drawing conclusions from an individual case. Without knowing how dangerous flying or smoking really is, you would conclude from both statements that both flying and smoking is safe. Of course flying is super super safe and smoking is the complete opposite. Of course the argument "my dad smoked his whole life" is complete bullshit. But why is it a bad argument in one case, and in another it is a valid argument? The correctness of the argument doesnt change how good of an argument it is, you cant conclude ANYTHING from both statements. You cant conclude that smoking is safe, you cant conclude that flying is safe, without seeing the big picture.
Youre saying that I want to "discredit the OP’s argument" with "an example like that". Its the same argument, just another use case. When you say its a stupid argument in my use case, which it clearly is, then its also a stupid argument in OP's use case

Love how I just clicked this to put my mind at ease for my upcoming trip and all I'm reading is people terrified of dying from a plane crash. Instead of being calmed, it makes me think that maybe the fear is valid. So this had the opposite effect. Especially the comment about how the pilot is separate and you don't hear him and I too don't understand the mechanics of why this many tonned metal thing can subvert gravity, I will now be also listening for sounds I don't understand. Fear increased

Yep. This video is a bit silly. In the same way, most people that are scared of spiders aren't afraid of being bitten. Here in the UK spiders are completely harmless, but arachnophobia is extremely common. Fear doesn't work like that.

I have a flight coming up soon. From Orange County CA to Houston TX. I do have a fear of flying so wish me luck!
Edit: So overall the trip wasn’t bad at all. 4 hours of painless, stress-free cruising from one destination to another. Pilot did a great job and attendants were very friendly. If flying an airplane was like this everytime then it would actually be fun and not scary.
One helpful hint is if you’re on a long plane trip is too just think positive and find ways to make the x hours go by fast. You know watch movies or do crosswords or something along those lines.

Yeah, something similar has happened to me. When i was a kid, teen or young adult, i love flying. Now that i`m in my 50's i really hate to fly. Probably its because now is very stressfull all the safety posts we have to go throught and waiting for hours in the gate before boarding. I remember flying was fun back in the day. Your friends and family members could walk you almost to the plane door. People could smoke, and drinks were free. Now is stresfull, expensive, with a lot of "safety" rules etc. And of course, watching all TV shi...tty programs about plane crashes and inefficient control tower staff.
