The Bulleid Double | Swanage Railway 30/04/2022

  • One original, one rebuilt. One 'Battle of Britain', one 'West Country'. One BR built, one Southern built. There had been no intention of going back to the Swanage Railway so soon before their 'Diesel Gala', but this was too tempting to miss, as two Bulleid pacifics steamed together over the bank holiday weekend to operate the railways' Yellow timetable.
    The pair, owned by Southern Locomotives Ltd, have long been residents of the Swanage Railway home-fleet, with both now in their second boiler tickets in preservation. Despite this, it's the first time they've rubbed shoulders in steam on a standard operating day in preservation, having only worked together previously for the 'Steam and Lights' services in the winter. Similarly, it's believed to be the first time in over 8 years that any two Bulleid pacifics have operated together on the Swanage Railway on a standard timetable day.
    Given that four years ago, SLL were facing a locomotive crisis with no operating Bulleid pacifics, with their only hire revenue coming in from 4MT Tank - 80104, the sight of two of their Bulleids steaming through the Isle of Purbeck was a very welcome one.
    Locomotives:
    BR(S) 'Battle of Britain' Class - 34072 "257 Squadron"
    Ex-SR Rebuilt 'West Country' Class - 34028 "Eddystone"
    All footage filmed on Saturday the 30th of April 2022.

    There's no denying how elegant both of these locomotives are. Sounds like it was a momentous occasion, wish I was there. There is also the prospect of a third returning to steam before too long as well!

    It's strange. As a child I didn't like the spam cans. I dismissed them as not looking like a 'proper steam locomotive' and yet now I appreciate them for the stunning machines that they are.

      My first encounter with a mainline steam loco was with 34051 Winston Churchill at Andover junction when I was about 6, I've loved spam cans ever since! However the rebuilt Bulleids are really magnificent locos!

    Well Matthew, I think you must know my thoughts on this subject matter by now (this going backwards business, tut, tut😃😃😃😃!!!!!) Your atmospheric "stills" always add that extra special feel 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    The usual fantastic work from yourself! And what a magical day, given the Bulleid Pacifics are one of my favourite locomotives of all time I kinda wish I'd known that this was happening and would've made the journey down! Also, what's the coach at the end of the rake of coaches Eddystone brings in at 2:54? Definitely not a BR Mk1 like the rest of the rake, I don't think? :)

    Probably a very simple answer for this but why does Eddystone pass through a stop signal at 18:05? Is it not in use at the moment? Also, thanks for another great video👍

    Eddystones nameplates need the red background as the black does not show very well

      However, hopefully only a year before we can see an even older engine back working on the line - the Adams T3 563! If the Drummond T9 and the M7 can then be repaired, what a historic combination that would make! (Maybe one day even with the O2 from the Isle of Wight to complete the double set! And there's also 488 at the Bluebell).

    Does running tender first pose any issues for loco crews? Are they limited in any way compared to running "normally"?

    • @winco68
      @winco68 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is more difficult for the crew but at 25mph it’s manageable. The driver has to continually turn to keep an eye on the track and signals. Sometimes a 3rd man is on board to assist and relay information.

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As mentioned, particularly with a large express loco like these, visibility is a hindrance - much less of an issue on most mixed traffic designs. The other notable issue, is the positioning of the controls.

  • @KillerKahn

    Does the Swanage Railway still use it's T9 for runs?

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The T9's boiler ticket expired in 2020, so it's not currently serviceable.
