- I'm getting ready for the upcoming bonsai show in 2 weeks. I'm picking trees, stands and accent plants.
Some cold weather at night has caused some frost damage. I also show some updates of the trees in the greenhouse and I talk about fertilizing my bonsai.

Hi Nigel. Your lithops are growing new leaves. They are underneath the old ones. Best not to water them until the new leaves have absorbed all of the moisture from the old ones. With any luck, some will divide at the same time.

Thank you Nigel! I learned some more from this video! I don't fertilize often because of the cost. I use the same you showed here. But I water out of my aquariums, that usually has a higher nitrate level. I've also started using dehumidifier water to mist the trees with as people were commenting that the white hard water stains were not good for my trees. I have my large totes like yours. I want to put at least one up on a stand so it will create water pressure to use a hose with to water everything outside. Maybe a drip system with a timer. I got some tiny living stones. They are so cute! The size of the eraser on a pencil! Great updates too! That screen with a tiny tree looks really good! That was a nice find!
Spring is late here in Scandinavia so we dont have many trees leaf out yet but most are getting there but my katsura maple leafed out this week so now spring is here

Nigel's thrift store finds are next level. I love thrift shopping and naturally I'm always looking for bonsai related items but I've never found actual bonsai style pots. I keep an open imagination though 😁
When I go thrift shopping I always look for bonsai pots, not much luck though. Only one time I got 3 small pots very cheap, they were not in pristine condition but I got them anyway. Should keep in mind looking for stand like material as well!

I love your birds nest spruce, what a epic tree!! And people I’m telling you this tree looks waaaaaay smaller in person!!! Just saying I really didn’t mind the rock on the stand look, I think it’s just the white pot throws it off a bit but I thought it gave it a rugged look and gave me a idea of the landscape around the tree, but that’s just my two cents!!
I really liked the part where you swapped different accentplants with you beautiful Bird's nest spruce.
I was amazed how much attention that stone manage to take from the tree (maybe just me, as I like stones too 😄)

Nigel, Ever thought of using a turn table for a display of a bonsai tree at a show? Would bring a really different perspective to the viewing of the plants as the viewer could easily admire the tree/trees from many different angles. Just food for thought.
These preparations are fun to watch!Feels like everyone watching the bride try on dresses. Lol
Personally, I do everything organic...More than not wanting to buy chemicals, but I'm around my trees four days per week (when not traveling), plus I'm in Southern California, so watering is an issue. I have an automatic system, but it doesn't cover everything.
For fertilizer, I just use the compost my worms make.
Seems to work for me. Lol
I think a miniature traditional style japanese tea table would go well with the birds nest spruce

Display stands: some years ago I saw something intriguing. There were three meticulously managed miniature trees. One was on a chipped and reused cement block, another was on a snapped piece of wood from a pallet (I think you call them skids), and the other was on a seed tray that had been stamped and crushed! The point was to highlight the precision of the trees against the randomness of the stands. And it really worked. There was also an accent stone that was just a chunk of concrete. I can't find the images now sadly.
I agreed entirely with your thinking about stands for yours, but it's interesting to think outside the box...

i got the "sta green" powder fertilizer last season. works good. its basically the same as the miracle grow but a few dollars less. everything looks beautiful nigel! happy bonsai'ing everyone!
I've had issues with miracle grow being contaiminated with fungas gnats so happy for any alternatives. I don't rate them (expensive for what it is too)
14:52 I think this stand would look better with 3-5 cm removed from the intented(outdented?) wood rectangles. I am talking about the sections of the stand between the feet and the plateau. Hard to put into words.. You already removed some wood in this area, right? I think more could be removed.

Fascinated to see you watering mossed up planting with liquid fertiliser. I find that this kills the moss, at least when the fertiliser is used at recommended dosage. Have tried reducing dosage but still find the moss doesn't like it!
Could it be the water Dave? Maybe check the ph level, just a thought!!!
Good thought, Nigel, it may be the water rather than the fertiliser. Love your videos, wish I had your eye for a composition. How is the Ginkgo coming on?

Yes, if the tree is using water, I feel it needs fertilizer too. Many of the trees get water and fertilizer about once a week if they are dormant.
