  • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End has changed the landscape for anime forever. It will probably go on to define the 2020s. 15 years from now people will still be dissecting and analyzing this anime. The themes are timeless and so is the story. On top of that the fabled Top Anime on MAL was dethroned by Frieren.

I don't see much analyses of the most important part of Frieren, for me ofc - the story building. It is like a large puzzle built meticulously over 28 masterfully crafted episodes. Each piece adds something to the magic system, char. build and development, themes, world building etc. It is just masterclass in story telling. Kudos to the director for this.

    • @antonkarenin7332

Also maturity in story telling. No shouting, no screaming, subtle character build and development mostly through action and show don't tell. It is closer to real life show than most of animes. Especially since the world in which takes place is rational, logical and well known. No crazy mambo jambo stuff which mechanics can't be explained.

I have watched so many animes for around 20 years, and only a few of them (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Gintama, and maybe Mob Psycho) can be compared to Frieren. Frieren is #1 on MAL for a lot of the reasons you mention. It is certainly one of my favorites among recent anime. A big part of this is also due to the fact that it has characteristics that people from different groups were looking for in a show. For instance, there are people who mostly care for action, and Frieren has that, but it also has well written characters for those who want to dive deeper into understanding what makes the character the way they are. There are other shows that I think are very good but that other people do not like so much because they may focus more one some of these aspects. Frieren is a very well balanced story, and I think that is one of the biggest reasons for its success.

While FMAB still holds up as a good story, it's not as relevant to the current community as Frieren has become. And that's clearly the case otherwise the numbers of people watching FMAB nowadays would still match Frieren's current viewership.
One day Frieren will also become irrelevant compared to modern anime, and people will probably say just like you, that Frieren is amazing because it still holds up after many years, and that the new anime is only doing well because its brand new.

@@TheClosetPanda well when frieren does end of it ever does maybe we can have an earnest discussion about it but I think your argument is a bit contrived, more people are watching frieren now because it’s new and because lots of people have already seen FMAB and let’s not forget that a lot of people own the box sets and are probably watching offline and it’s always on most legal streaming sites because they know people want to watch it. Also how has fmab aged in a way that people wouldn’t want to watch it? Frierens not the first show to be slow and somber which FMAB has moments like that too.

    • @TheClosetPanda
      @TheClosetPanda 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@blakedavis2447 I think I wasn't clear enough when I referred to the relevancy of Frieren compared to FMAB.
There is of course the fact that fewer people are watching FMAB now because most of the people who would watch it already have. But when I'm referring to relevance, I mean an anime's current ability to draw new viewership to it.
Of course because Frieren is new it will naturally have a significant boost to new viewership, but I still think that counts towards what can be considered relevant.
As to what can be considered culturally relevant, yes you could argue that FMAB is still very culturally relevant because of the amount of influence it's had on changing the anime industry. However, I don't think that makes FMAB mutually exclusive to Frieren, because Frieren *may* go on to do the same.
Anime has become more globalised in the last decade, so I can see Frieren having an easier time spreading through media and reaching non-anime audiences, than FMAB had back when it aired.
And that's not to suggest that FMAB didn't age well or doesn't share similar qualities. It's rather to say that people like picking up what is shiny and new, so all those 'newly converted' are more likely to pick up Frieren while it's fresh, than an anime over a decade old, regardless of its quality.

I've read all the Mushoku Tensei light novels, and have been happy to watch the series, but in terms of production quality, Frieren season one edges out Mushoku Tensei I think. Add in the "harem" and "pervy" qualities of Mushoku Tensei, and a lot of people were turned off by it (not me though). That being said, as Mushoku Tensei goes forward, I think a number of people who've only watched the anime, and not read the light novels are going to find that the story bogs down a bit later on. This is often a problem with long series. I also think the animation quality for Mushoku Tensei dropped off from season 1 to season 2 as well. Not a large drop-off, but a noticeable one and not untypical on a series that gets additional seasons. Personally speaking, I hope they take their time with season 2 of Frieren and maintain the quality instead of rushing it out.

What defines what's objectively worth being in the top 10 for you? Is it quality? or quantity? or something else?
Because everyone is judging what they consider top 10 by different parameters.
Frieren is top 10 in terms of how many people think it should be top 10, regardless of the parameter- and that's just reflected in the average score people are giving it, for whatever quality or qualities they're judging it on. Whether you share that opinion or not, it can only be 'objectively' ranked based on average statistics and what the majority of people think.

    • @zmortis111

Subjective taste is just that, subjective. Objectively speaking, the art direction, animation quality, backgrounds, shot composition, cinematography, story pacing, and character development from Frieren Beyond Journey's End is all top quality for an anime series, and some would say on par with the production quality of a Studio Ghibli movie. Quite a lot of things people call their personal top ten anime series are not at that production level. Yet it also comes down to the kinds of things people enjoy from their entertainment. Something could be rather bog standard in all of those qualities, yet still subjectively be their favorite series because they are more invested in the series characters, or the challenges faced by a particular protagonist they identify with. Some people have been following a series for a 1000+ episodes (One Piece Fans perhaps) and are so emotionally invested in the characters that it doesn't matter to them that the animation quality of the early seasons is just average at best.
One thing I can say having watched non-anime fans on reaction channels watching Frieren as their first Anime, is you could see them being hooked in the first 15 minutes of the first episode. They were able to become invested in the story and main character that quickly. There sure as hell aren't many anime outside of Studio Ghibli's movies with that kind of rapid draw. I saw a number of anime fan reactions as well, and damn if they also didn't become invested in the characters and the story of Frieren in the first episode as well. There are a whole bunch of anime people consider their personal favorites that just don't have that kind of compelling effect on the "normies" watching anime for the first time. They might find it interesting, or funny. Yet that "investment" in the character's story usually takes 3-5 episodes to develop. That is the power of Frieren, and the quality does not drop off once in the 28 episodes of season 1. I can only hope it continues as the story goes on.

It's not everyone's taste, but when you look at it from various different production aspects you can see it holds up in art design, background art, animation quality, story pacing, mixing humor with sadness, ennui with grief and joy. The shot composition and camera angle choices are often quite appealing from a cinematographic point of view. The character development is realistic and satisfying. It makes a point of tension being the different perspectives on time between a nearly immortal elf and the humans she becomes friends with through their adventures. One thing that people seem to miss about the story of Frieren is how many of the main characters in the story are orphans (Heiter, Eisen, Fern, Stark, and Frieren herself.) This is mainly due to conflicts with humans or demons.
If someone likes only shonen or horror anime for example, Frieren is not likely to appeal much to them. There is no "fight of the week" or "mass carnage" formula at play here. If someone likes anime with good art, quality storytelling, and satisfying character development, Frieren is very likely to appeal to them. I've watched a number of reaction channels with non-anime fans watching Frieren (sometimes as their first exposure to anime) and watched people who are not anime fans got hooked within the first 15 minutes of episode one. There aren't a lot of series I can name in my 40+ years of watching anime and reading manga that have that kind of appeal to non-anime "normies" out there. It shares that quality with the best of Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli films.

While I disagree with you. I've watched both FMA, and FMAB. I've never gone back to watch them a second time (well quite a bit of FMAB felt like a second time, and a bit of a slog because of it). I've already watched Frieren multiple times. So what we are talking about is subjective taste, and not objective truth here. I've watched reaction channels watching Frieren and you can spot when people who have never watched anime before, and when people who have watched anime become invested in the story and characters within the first 15 minutes of episode one. I would bet you won't get that same 15 minute to investment with episode 1 of FMAB with non-anime viewers, or with anime viewers that aren't shonen fans. You're not getting the slice of life viewers, the romantic show viewers, the high fantasy viewers, or the people who appreciate the technical production values of Frieren. That doesn't mean FMAB isn't a good series, or well liked by its fans. But if I were to give two non-anime fans the first 15 minutes of the first episode of each series. Then ask them which series they find they most want to watch more of. I think more of them would select Frieren. At the end of the day, unless we are talking about a teenaged boy, I think Frieren makes a better gateway anime for most mature people. Feel free to test out my theory, and I'll concede the teen boy audience to FMAB, because that is its actual target audience.

It's interesting that the paradigm has finally shifted. Now for the first time since FMAB's 'era', MAL ratings will be compared to something other than FMAB.
Recency bias is always a factor, and Frieren is no exception to the rule. However judging by how slowly its rating has dropped, the gradual decline will only slow and it's quite feasible that Frieren will permanently settle with a score that's higher than FMAB, regardless of its position in the overall table.
Although Frieren has already cemented itself as one of the most well-received anime of modern times, it is inevitable (and good) that another anime will eventually dethrone it too. It is then that Frieren will be fully realised as having existed in its own 'era'.
And I think that's pretty neat.

Frieren has this slice of life tone to it.. Reminds of how Hai to Gensou no Grimgar or Made in Abyss feels. It has this nonchalant / chill / lo fi tone. Which is a bit underwhelming and saps away any tension / anticipation you feel when watching some of the episodes. And the fights are pretty short. I don't think it's anime of the decade or and definitely not the last 20 years, maybe anime of the year.

New ways to animate? Ingenious ways of telling the history? A production that makes sakuga more easy to do? If doesn't have any of these you cant say it "changed the industry", its just a really good anime with a great production and animation, nothing innovative enought to change something.

This is why in data science the majority of the time is spent whittling down data to it's purest degree.

    • @zmortis111

Correct, FMAB built a fan base when not as many other options were released at the same time. It stood out from the crowd of its day, and drew a very devoted fanbase. That being said, the production quality is not the same level as Frieren. The story is beloved in its niche, but not that many people outside of the niche follow it. That niche has camped on MAL for over a decade, downvoting anything that threatened to topple their king. It's become a meme at this point, and one of the reasons Chibi has mentioned the rankings on MAL can't be trusted in terms of accuracy. A passionate rabid fanbase protecting their crown doesn't mean FMAB is the ultimate in anime. It just means the fans are hardcore, sometimes to the point of driving away other people from the sites they inhabit. I know I don't personally use or visit MAL because the FMAB fans are tedious and unwilling to consider any other anime as worth watching. It's also why it became a meme to upvote Interspecies Reviewers to irritate the FMAB fans several years back. Just to show the #1 spot on MAL is not proof positive of being the top fan favorite show of all time. The heavy hand of the MAL admins "corrected" these Interspecies Reviewers votes so as to not alienate their FMAB devotees.

The reason some people want anime to stay popular in Japan, but niche in the West is that popularity makes it a target for "tourists" with political agendas to "make it more inclusive" by attacking the elements of Japanese culture in anime. See also Assassin's Creed Shadows, Stellar Blade, Black Myth Wukong and many other attempts to force a Western view into Asian entertainment. I know if Frieren gets noticed by these people, they will complain that not enough "minorities" and "sexual identities" are represented by the show.
