- In this episode of Electronic Basics I will show you how to control a stepper motor just with a tranformer and a capacitor without driver. however stepper motors need a driver in order to work, The speed will slow, equal to the frequency of the grid, but this can be in fact an advantage for some projetcs that do not need high speeds

I thought you meant the “thumbnail” photo for the video link until . . I agree with you, but I wonder if it serves some real world purpose. In the 19th century, there were a groups of the working class who loved to fight and grew their thumbnails long for the purpose of gouging an eye out. They were called . . . wait for it . . . Gougers. I wouldn’t be too quick to trash talk. Dude’s probably fierce.
This isn't going to work if you actually have a stepper motor lol. You need three different pulse phases to run the motor otherwise it wouldn't be a stepper motor. Even if you didn't care about steps and just wanted linear motion standard single phase ac will just get the coils hot and kill the motor.
Many steppers are two phase with two center tapped windings. I'm guessing the phase shift with the capacitor is enough to get this to half step and the polarity reversing drives it almost like a brushless DC motor. I wouldn't think this is operating even close to peak efficiency.
Fake its does not work like this stteper motor should be a true driver only
