College for me but I too remember this episode. I could listen to William read the phone book and still be entertained. Fortunately SNL would get better... and them worse. It’s unwatchable now.
I haven't read it yet but Nova Express was part of a trilogy he did called the Cut Up trilogy. Do not ask me what it's about because I don't really know [jaja]. The whole experiment was to cut up a paper and rearrange the pieces to get new sentences and words; in other words, nonsense. Burroughs believed that language is a virus and he was trying in a sense to show that through the cut up series.
It's a really broad, gruesome scenario with Doctor Benway, a recurring figure in Burroughs' writing, performing very bad surgery basically. Very dark and morbid sense of humor.
Suddenly obscure parts of Naked Lunch make perfect sense.
Jesus. Only 217 likes. This is probably the greatest and most inexplicable few minutes of TV history.
The audience laughter is the icing on this strange cake. Sounds nervous.
Could you imagine him hosting a talk show
The running Dr.Benway character makes more sense when you realize that WSB spent a semester in medical school.
My god I remember this from when I was in high school!!

After the intro it jumps to the second half. Then it plays the intro again and the second half again. The first half is left out.
