Bill Murray's interpretation is always in the little details, as much physically as with the line delivery. When he's talking to Claire on the phone and says "it's been..." then looks at his watch before saying "15 years." I'm always the only one laughing at this but it's just too perfectly Bill Murray!

The Ghost of Christmas Past was played by David Johanson, formerly of the punk/glam rock band, The New York Dolls. He went solo and created a new persona - Buster Poindexter and had a big hit with "Hot, Hot, Hot" in 1987. An interesting character musically and in interviews. There is a great TH-cam video out there with David's Buster Poindexter persona and Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. It is funny as can be.

About 10 years ago, a couple of years after she'd introduced the movie to some HS friends, there was something on FB about lines from a movie without giving it away. She put "I hear bells, do you hear bells?" Not long after, she got back from one friend, "Mrs Houk, get out the car!" And from another, "Why's my back all wet?" That one actually surprised us, not only that he knew the movie, but could remember it well enough to quote it.

I was particularly excited about this film because my family and I watch it at least 1-2 times a year.
From your reactions, I could remember how I reacted when I was 9 years old when I saw him for the first time. Thank you so much for watching this film with us. P.S. scene in the restaurant when Bill Murray pours water on the waiter's face and then slips on the stairs. Wasn't written that way in the script. But since Bill Murray pretended it was part of it, it was left as a gag.

The bit where Carol Kane grabbed Bill by the bottom lip actually really injured him. :D She tore his lip and he had to wait until it was healed up before they could keep filming.

    • @brucelaborin2124

If you really look at the look of the film, the characters aren't really dated in their costumes. The costume designer was smart to keep trends and styles to a minimum. I watch this every year, and like the other best Christmas Carol re-interpretations, it gets me choked up. In this case, Bill Murray delivers everything he has to give as a performer. It'll never age as a movie.

@@brucelaborin2124 It's dated in terms of references. Lee Marvin, Mary Lou Retton, Richard Pryor burning himself? These references were dated when the movie premiered tbh. Excellent choice - a classic contemporary comedy telling of A CHRISTMAS CAROL - Murray is amazing as always. Some trivia - his real life brothers are in the film (Brian Doyle - who also was on SNL in the late 70s - plays his dad the butcher; his brothers John & Joel are the brothers in the Ghost of Christmas Present sequence); co-writer Michael O' Donaghue - who was an original SNL writer - cameos as the priest at the cremation; Murray's mother passed away during production which explains how in the final monologue how Bill manages to make the speech beyond poignant - supposedly nailed it in one take.
