Richard Pryor nearly burned to death in 1980, either in a deliberate suicide attempt or else accidentally, while freebasing cocaine. So eight years later, that was still a pretty infamous incident.
Always loved Bobcact's gradual unravelling, and as for Carol Kane's psychotic ghost of Christmas Present....perfection. Great reaction gents, Merry Christmas
One of the things I loved most in this movies, and with more Bill Murray movies in his early career, is he uses his actual brothers. Brian Doyle played Frank's dad, while John played Franks younger brother. Joel was part of the viewing audience during the live performance of A Christmas Carol. Bill and Brian did a lot of movies together; including Caddyshack, and Groundhog's Day. Any time you watch a Bill Murray film; keep an eye out for any of his brothers. As far as I know; Ed was only in one film, and his sisters are not actors, as well.
One of the Murray brothers is also one of James's party guests on the sofa - so there are 3 brothers in that one scene when Bill is there watching them.
The funniest part about your reaction to this one is that...when you predicted that the Ghost of Christmas Future would "kick in the door" and then you mimed and did the sound effect of racking a pump action shotgun, you were basically right. LOL Granted, it was Eliot that kicked in the door instead of the Ghost, and he had a double barrel shotgun instead of a pump, but you basically NAILED the ending spot on...in broad terms. ROFLMAO 😂😂
When Dickens was writing this novella, he described it to a friend as his "sledge hammer". Most of his books were really, really long for two reasons: They were serialized publications, and he got paid by the word. But not this one.
Regarding more recent commentaries and ratings, I have watched several Reactions to _Scrooged_ and younger people tend to freak out about the gun chase in a workplace thing. Many of us olders explain workplace violence was _very_ rare (going "postal" because some post office folks went berserk was about the only experience we had) and how they made it humorous with the Bugs Bunny reference. But we are all a product of our time and surroundings, so I can understand the mis-interpretation of several of the movie's threads.
It's so hectic during the holidays so I really appreciate you guys posting this on Christmas Day. I love it when movies can mix genres without pulling any punches and this one really delivers with being a comedy while still kicking you hard in the feels and not shying away from the horror.
I have to say I came across this video by accident and I am glad I did because you two had me in stiches the whole time. So, far this is got to be one of my favorite reactions. Carol Kane has always been one of my favorite actresses. I would say she is like the Helena Bonham Carter of her time. The two seem to love to play unique characters. She is also in Princess Bride and Transylvania 6500. She has been in many more, but I put those too down because they are similar in structure too this. Comedies.
It was awesome to see that you guys "got it" when watching the movie - when it came out, it was panned for being way too dark (at the time, it was REALLY dark) and it didn't separate itself enough from the Ghostbusters franchise which created even more confusion (like the film's title was translated as "The Revenge of the Ghosts" here in Finland) and as Murray didn't have the 'classic' comedic tropes in his acting (he always does his own thing), people felt a bit confused when watching this in the theaters back in '88. I personally always loved this film just for the darker aspects and the deep emotions and issues featured on screen.
IMHO it updated the story for the modern age in a very meta kind of way by using the real Dickens story live TV show as a backdrop to Frank's own encounters with the ghosts. There's also a sneaky Trump joke in there just after the Ghost of Christmas Present hits him with a toaster which I never noticed in the dozens of times I watched it as a kid but it suddenly became obvious watching it in 2019 😂
I always forget just how well this movie was cast. Every character brought so much to the film, and they did a fantastic job. Great you guys had fun with this.
When you guys predicted that the third ghost would bust in with a shotty (27:40) I laughed my ass off. I guess near misses count in horseshoes, hand grenades, and clever movie predictions.
You two are so lovely to watch and spend time with…I love your perspectives on things…its a pleasure to be a part of your world. Thank you for being brave and sharing your channel. ❤
The novel A Christmas Carol on which Scrooged is loosely based was written by Charles Dickens. Charles Dickens great-great-great grandson is the actor Harry Lloyd. Harry Lloyd portrayed Viserys Targaryen (Daenerys brother) on Game of Thrones.
Richard Pryor caught himself on fire while doing cocaine. If you search youtube for "Richard Pryor running down the street" you will find clips of Richard himself making fun of the incident.
Richard Pryor was a comedic stand up and actor who was high on drugs wearing a synthetic shirt when he spilled alcohol onto it and accidently caught himself on fire. He ran down the road screaming and had to have major skin grafts done. One of his best movies was Silver Streak with Gene Wilder. Because he was so famous when it happened, EVERYONE knew what had occurred.
"It's Christmas Eve! It's... it's the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer, we... we... we smile a little easier, we... w-w-we... we... we cheer a little more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are the people that we always hoped we would be!" Fun Fact: This was Bill Murray's first starring role since Ghostbusters (1984). He had been living in Paris, and had seriously considered giving up acting altogether. Gun Enthusiast Fact: The sling mounted GE M134 minigun used by Lee Majors in the beginning of the movie was the same one used by Jesse Ventura in Predator (1987). Murray Family Fact: All of Bill Murray's acting brothers, John Murray, Joel Murray, and Brian Doyle-Murray appeared in this movie. John's the only one that played his on-screen brother, Joel plays one of the guests at John's party, while Brian plays Bill's on-screen father. Historical Fact: When Frank throws water on the waiter he sees burning, he says he thought he was Richard Pryor to cover his insane behavior. This is a reference to an event in Pryor's life when he, while freebasing cocaine, accidentally set himself on fire and ran down a busy street in Los Angeles.
Happy Christmas fellas! Fun movie! Nobody does comedy like Bill Murray. Can't wait to watch the reaction once my nephews grow tired of jumping on my head.
Great reaction! Especially the sing-along. Scrooged has always been one of my favorite Christmas movies. I watch it multiple times every Christmas season.
This movie remains one of my most quoted during the holidays; specifically David Johansen's Ghost of Christmas Past - "Garden slugs got more outta life than you!"
Several things: Great job. Lee Majors was a major star in the '60s, 70s, and 80s. He played the Six-million-dollar Man and The Fall Guy. That is Sharon Stone Bill sucks face with under the mistle toe. Richard Pryor set fire to himself (hence that reference), The little boy is on the director's shoulder's at the end -- Richard Donner -- so he makes a cameo. Love this movie.
Bill Murray’s younger brother in this is his real younger brother in real life….the other male guest at his brother’s party when he got the new vcr is also his other brother in real life….also the guy who plays his father when he is with the first ghost is his older brother in real life….
The Richard Pryor joke for the waiter was a reference back to when Pryor was in the back of a plane getting high smoking crack and caught himself on fire.
Richard Pryor at one time was really bad on drugs and while free basing cocaine caught himself on fire…he had really bad burns on his neck and upper body…..he survived of course but had to go they a lot of recovery
This and Christmas Vacation are my must watch Christmas movies every year. This one has an amazing balance of comedy with the serious tones of the message overall. It’s a shame the scores are low on some sites for it but to each their own. It’ll always be a classic in my book though.
Pryor's closing joke (Live on the Sunset Strip) after his incident: he lights a match and scolds his audience for them making the joke about the match being him running down the street.
I watch this one multiple times every Christmas. My favorite adaptation of this story after the 1951 adaptation (that’s the one the little boy was watching on TV).
FUN FACT! Bill Murray's Real-Life Brothers are in the movie which makes it even More Special more than anything. The scene where the brother and friends are guessing shows like the SS Minnow the 2 Closes Guys wearing Sweaters are Bill Murray's Real-Life Brothers Joel Murray (brother) & John Murray (brother) Bill Murrays 3rd Brother plays his Dad in the Ghost of the Past which is Brian Doyle-Murray
One of my favorite Christmas movies. It can't be easy being original while doing a version of a story that's already been done a hundred times. Bill Murray and Bobcat Goldthwaite in the same movie? Yes, please. I wash they had done more movies together. Others have mentioned below that some of Bill Murray's brothers were in the movie, including Brian Doyle-Murray who played Frank's father. Brian appears in many of Bill's movies. Claire was played by Karen Allen, who was Marion in the Indiana Jones movies. The Ghost of Christmas Present was played by the wonderful Carol Kane, who was in The Princess Bride, Addams Family Values, and the 70s sitcom Taxi. The director told Murray to ad-lib that speech at the end, so it was mostly made up on the spot.
Great reaction, guys. Merry Christmas to y’all and your families. Hope you have a great new year as well. Keep these coming and you’ll have to up your sub goal again. Best of luck and many thanks for all the laughs and insight. ❤️ from Texas
"we slapped her in the face and got her attention it was probably something she ate" "He says it was probably something she ate" "OH GIVE ME THAT!" My favorite line from the movie
Great reaction guys. Bill Murray has an infinity with ghosts.Nnow go check out his best role as Pete Venkman in Ghostbusters (1984), my personal favourite movie of all time.
Merry Christmas 🎄🎄 Cam and Zay fam. Watching in bed, on this snowy Christmas ⛄ morning, waiting for the grandkids to wake up. I can tell, this is going to be an amazing reaction
1:55 Wrong duck. Daffy was Loony Tunes, and if you're thinking Donald then again wrong duck since the cartoon duck Scrooge was Scrooge McDuck, Donald's uncle who played Ebenezer in Mickey's Christmas Carol.
This film has become a classic , as much as Christmas vacation. It is one of my must see Films every Christmas.A real masterpiece. I love to watch you two react to the films. Especially the ones you are unfamiliar with. By watching these classics You are getting the best Classic film education you could ever get. By the Way you may recognize Claire, "Karen Allen" as Indiana Jones Love interest in the first Indiana Jones film " Raiders of The Lost Ark". Merry Christmas to both of you, and keep up the Reactions , your friendship shows , and your chemistry as hosts is awesome, and Cameron's Gag reflexes are legendary.
24:19 if my boss talked to me like that while filming A Christmas Carol id think that he was going through some stuff i would not have thought that he was crazy.
Funny you should say "Jim Carrey level acting", since Jim also played Scrooge in 2009, definitely worth reacting to the video on YT for it called: A Christmas Carol (2009) - 'Opening' - The Full Motion Capture Experience
The deal with the Chinese food comment is that the blonde office chick had asked him if he wanted to go get some and he told her no because they were using ally cats as meat. (Yes, very racist) So when Claire asked him he was like, oh shit, and if you listen carefully you hear a cat meow. The point is that he wasn’t into the blonde but was instantly into Claire.
Funny that you should mention Jim Carrey - his character in the movie 'Cable Guy' (with Mathew Broderick, directed by Ben Stiller) reminds me of the childhood of Frank's as depicted in the flashback. Definitely worth checking out and maybe worth a reaction. And Claire (Karen Allen) is Marion in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Merry Christmas to both of you. I’m pretty certain I’m one of your biggest fans. If I wasn’t so poor, I’d be a Patreon. My only critique I’ve ever offered in my comments is the genre you react to. It’s not stuff I typically follow, and so, I don’t watch the reactions. I mostly watch your “special” reactions… to “other” stuff. So my ONLY advice… broaden your horizons. Do more stuff like this. You two are so much fun to watch. Great reactors. Keep up your he great work!!!
Merry Christmas Cam and Zay! I love when younger reactors watch some of these older classics (some may say these aren't exactly old classics, but considering this one is 34 years old, I say it is!) I was 11 years old when my grandma took me to the movies to see this one. Sweet, sweet memories indeed! Although as I have grown older and watched this film each season, one thing kinda bugs me about it- I wish Bill Murray's character was less of a cruel a-hole. I realize that's what Scrooge is- but seeing Bill Murray (who is always a loveable guy in film, especially back in the day) as this extra nasty person who is always throwing tantrums kinda makes this movie not as good as it used to be! I feel like they laid it on waaaay too thick. Just my inner critic coming out the older I get- but still holds a special place in my heart.
The movie Groundhog Day could be a sequel...he falls off the rails and ends up a weather man...then ends up in Puxatony. 😆 Both characters are into brunettes!
The reason some of the ratings are a bit mixed is it was ahead of its time, and movies hadn't really perfected sarcasm yet (which turned out to be Bill Murray's sharpest comedic weapon). So it seems a bit uneven in tone because it's not sure what it's trying to do, so it does several different things that don't always mesh. There's like 20% raw greatness, 40% pretty goodness, 30% late 1980s mediocrity, and 10% awkward tonal shifts.
Not unimportant to the state of Bill Murray and his 3 brothers in this film is that their mother died shortly before the film went into production - so some of that emotion on his face may be just real grief poking through.
Richard Pryor set himself on fire while freebasing cocaine, a few years earlier from when this movie was made.
When he was on fire, people saw him running down the street. He made references to the incident in his later stand up performances.
RIP Comedic Legend Richard Pryor. 🎤
I’ve watched at least a half dozen reactions to this movie and NOBODY gets that reference. I guess you have to be GenX (like me) or older to get it.
Oh I read that about Pryor(RIP) sweating cocaine yea would do it.
@artman2oo3 these youngins never know anything.
Richard Pryor nearly burned to death in 1980, either in a deliberate suicide attempt or else accidentally, while freebasing cocaine. So eight years later, that was still a pretty infamous incident.
IIRC both Pryor and Michael Jackson famously caught on fire.

"Ghost of Christmas Present better show up and knock the shit out of him." Ask and you shall receive! XD
17:21 Richard Pryor accidentally lit himself on fire while freebasing cocaine (basically smoking crack) around the time of this movie.
It was closer to a decade before this movie came out, in summer 1980. By Christmas 1988 that was a pretty dated reference already.
It's so hectic during the holidays so I really appreciate you guys posting this on Christmas Day. I love it when movies can mix genres without pulling any punches and this one really delivers with being a comedy while still kicking you hard in the feels and not shying away from the horror.
This was a pretty good adaptation of the story. I love the way the Ghost of Christmas Present keeps on hitting him to change from scene to scene.
The X on Bill Murray's cheek represents a kiss. XXXXs are kisses, OOOOs are hugs. She hit him "in the kisser" (his mouth).

Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet but, Bill Murray's actual brothers play his father and younger brother in this movie.

The 1951 version of this story, "A Christmas Carol," is much, much better.
Donald Duck is Disney, Daffy is looney Tunes (bugs bunny and them). Merry Christmas guys!!!
And Bobcat Goldthwait imitates Looney Tunes' Elmer Fudd trying to kill Bugs Bunny when he first begins stalking Murray's character.
I've seen this movie 100s of times and it still gets me
Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!

Don't call him Shirley. 😂 Love you guys.
Feed me Seymour was from Little Shop of Horrors
For another Bill Murray gem, try reacting to Lost in Translation with Scarlet Johansson. It’s different than anything I’ve seen him in.
The guy who got the vcr for Christmas is bill Murray's realy life brother.
Merry Christmas! Cam & Zay. Have a joyful blessed Christmas Day.

bill murray is awesome in pretty much everything lost in translation is great its a more straight acting film for him and he's amazing in it
The movie Groundhog Day could be a sequel...he falls off the rails and ends up a weather man...then ends up in Puxatony.
Richard Pryor lit his hair on fire smoking crack.

Never trust the ratings. This is a classic.
In my opinion, the Carol Kane scene was the best part of the movie.
Not unimportant to the state of Bill Murray and his 3 brothers in this film is that their mother died shortly before the film went into production - so some of that emotion on his face may be just real grief poking through.
Nice reaction guys!
Funny thing is Pluto tv does have a channel for dogs and a channel for cats
Richard Pryor set himself on fire when smoking crack, thus, I thought he was, lol
