on the subject of Chales XI one shouldn't overlook that he completed a massive military reform that created the Swedish allotment system (Swedish: indelningsverket) a system that allowed for Sweden to have a professional army that was economically maintained in peacetime. The Allotment system that supplied the troops for the so called "Carolean Army" is one of the main reasons as to why sweden held out in the Great Northern War for 21 years, instead of the war just being a short invasion and rape of Sweden. The allotment system didn't only create a professional army for sweden, it also enabeled the swedish army to be roughly twice the size per capita of comparative european armies at the time, as well as being able to assemble and stand ready to march in about half the time as comparative european armies at the time.
I totally agree. While Charles XII was a great general (king not so much) his father was the one who created the Swedish war machine that he later commanded. I also found the border-line ignoring of Charles X pretty confounding considering his victories against Denmark which gave Sweden its southern borders (which are relatively unchanged to this day). I see why he would focus on Gustav II Adolf and Charles XII but there was other kings in between that played an important role.
Into battle facing the fire Lord thy will be done Into battle walk in a line See the whites in their eyes! Caroleans are marching on! Put their lives in God's hands For their Kingdom and Fatherland!
Yeah, it was pretty much the same thing that happened to Frederick II: His father made the military reforms and raised his son in a military setting, and his son used that new military to make his conquests. Goes to show that great militaries need two lifetimes to become legendary
Really underselling the ability and victories of Charles XII here. The man absolutely thrashed far bigger enemy armies time and again. He was the greatest Swedish king since Gustavus Adolphus himself. His eventual defeat doesn't change that.
Agreed, the video just kinda dismisses him as this inexperienced child that caused the Swedish Empire to collapse. Try fighting a war at the age of 18 on three fronts against some of the most powerful countries in the world. The entire population of the Swedish Empire in 1700 was roughly 2.5 million and Russia had 14-16 million. You then also need to add in the populations of Poland-Lithuania (20,000) and Denmark-Norway (no exact date around 1700 but had a population of 13,150,00 in 1645, likely even higher than this). All together, Sweden had roughly 2.5 million against the combined strength of Russia, Denmark-Norway and Poland-Lithuania with ROUGHLY 15,151,500. After you look at these figures, it makes you wonder how Sweden won any victories at all and endured the 21 years of war it did.
He was a fool. He knew how to win a battle but that was all he cared for. His successes led him to leave all political reason behind and go on an adventure trip across Europe instead of capitalizing on them and come to an advantageous peace. He was brave and a great leader in battle but unfit to rule a country. It's pointless to look at the odds and marvel in the glory of his battles. They all amounted to less than nothing for Sweden. I understand why he is so popular and has metal songs about him. Big battles are for boys. Politics are for men.
Sweden didn't lose a square metre to the Danes in the great northern war, nor have I ever heard a Swedish historian ever call Charles X and XI incompetent
Christian Englert Christina wasn’t a very popular person at the time and calling her incompetent, though a bit of a stretch, isn’t necessarily untrue. She however did abdicate fairly quickly so she wasn’t around very long.
Norway is the pubes for our cock shaped country.Without Norway, Sweden looks like an adolescent dick instead of a manly dick.Finland is... grabbed by the balls.
Wouldn't call Karl X Gustav (Charles X in english) incompetent, he conquered Skåne (Scania) from Denmark, a region that is still to this day Swedish, our southern parts.
Carl X Gustav (in this video being called incompetent) took control of Warsaw for a short period, walked with his army over the ice (twice) in Denmark and gained Scania/Skåne (south region of Sweden today). The Swedish empire have never been bigger than during this time. In my opinion he is a very underrated king. And he did all that in 6 years.
@Polish Hero Witold Pilecki Yes, Sigismund (the grandson of Gustav Vasa) was ousted in a rebellion led by his uncle and Gustavus Adolphus' father, Charles IX, in large part due to Sigismund being a catholic.
Wait what? That last part. Completely wrong. Despite the crushing defeat at Poltava, Sweden managed to muster new, green recruits and push off the attacking Danes, succesfully defending Scania and keeping it under Swedish rule. All this while the whole Swedish army was in ruins.
You overlooked Charles the 11th really much. It was due to his military reforms that sweden in the great northern war were so successful leading up til poltava despite them being outnumbered in every battle. Sweden basically dominated the battles until they got defeated at poltava. And no the swedish empire did not decline because europeans adapted sweden tactics. (they obviously did, but that isnt why the empire fell) The great northern war is the reason why the swedish empire fell. Up until poltava sweden was at its strongest. And since you disregard the reforms issued by Charles the 11th and the military tactics used during the great northern war by Charles the 12th its easy to miss that swedish tactics during this time were not like other european nations. Sure they all used line infantry, but sweden unlike many other nations fought higly aggressively and also fought very fast. I actually wrote a scientific essay on this topic if you are interested. Otherwise pretty good video. (I am swedish so I learned alot of the swedish empire in school and on my freetime thats why I am nitpicking)
People also tend to overlook the fact that Charles XII didn't command everything himself, Sweden did have some pretty experienced generals too at that time.
Nimroc That is true. Even though the king took the heavy decisions as he became more experienced. (he also is said to be the last king to fight in the frontlines)
MudgateBronn I write everything else in English I find it more fitting with Charles. (better flow when reading). IDK why but my brain hurts when I quickly mix english with swedish words in the middle of a sentence. So I dont pander, I do this all the time even when referring to my friends in english I proununce it with an english accent and the same with my own name I cant pronounce Matthias in english so I call myself Matthew.
If he was shot by his own men somone would have noticed. Thats my problem with that theord, that and that most newer resarch point to him being shot by the fortress.
@@PokePresto I was in the frontline during a siege. In other words, in a middle of battle. There were several witnesses but no one saw where the shot came from.
Im Swedish and it's a pleasure to see videos of our old empire. Fun fact: During the later stage of the Great Northern War, thousands of swedish soldier surrendered and were held in Russian POW camps until the war ended. After the defeats at Poltava and Perevolochna there were about 20,000-25,000 Swedes that capitulated Individual surrenders were uncommon, usually a large unit surrendered all its men. Most of them were put to work in Ukraine, Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Another large group was moved into Siberia and Ural, where they start to work in mining under command of Vasily Tatishchev. About 8,000 Swedes joined the Russian Army to survive, so Peter I put them in Astrakhan Garrison and on Ural Cossack Line to protect Russian land against Kazakhs and Kirgizian raiders, where they joined the military expeditions of Bekovich-Cherkassky to Khiva, Swedes quickly turned into Eastern Orthodox Christians and got under linguistic assimilation with the local Russians. So, many Russians have Swedish roots both from Rus vikings and from later encounters. Another fun fact: After Poltava a couple of hundred swedish soldiers deserted and ended up in Hungary and by that time Hungary was in a war that was called ''Rákóczi's War of Independence'', it was a part of the '' Spanish Succession'' most of these Swedish soldiers conscripted as mercenaries. So In 1710 Rákóczi admitted the Swedes into the demoralized Kuruc army. The Hungarian-Polish-Swedish-French army was close to victory against the Austrians in the Battle of Romhány, but the last of Rákóczi's forces was crushed in the course of a Austrian counterattack.

Some comments: 5:07 Charles the X won the Second Northern War which was a big deal since it kind of crushed the Danes 6:23 The Great Northern War: It also included Denmark from the start (even if they withdraw early) 7:08 The lost territories in Germany was to other German states (and not Denmark) 1:10 The Kalmar union can be seen as a Scandinavian/Nordic union that became too much danish for the Swedes
@@kstreet7438 To be fair, history is massive. A line has to be drawn somewhere. History is poorly taught in most US education systems but the lack of Swedish history isn’t a part of that.
In general smaller countries who were independent or somewhat independent during this time period like Ireland and Switzerland developed a mercenary culture as if your fighting men are not needed to control and expand an empire then they might as well attempt to enrich themselves.
@History House Productions Like Austria... :( Austria is a nice Land but Italy could give us really back South Tyrol… I mean Italy is not to small and a really beautiful land, they don't need South Tyrol. The way Charles the 12:th, dies, according to your drawing, is historically inaccurate. Hej didn't diet while fighting, he died in a trench because he was shot in the head, either by a norwegian soldier or a swede, tiered of war.
@@perperson199 Well its fucking impossible for a Norwegian soldier to hit him PERFECTLY in the head in the middle of the night from a distance more than 200 meters.
+Haradrim That's because they weren't aiming for him. They were firing grapeshot artillery just at the Swedish Lines in general and one shot happened to hit Charles XII
I love these classic videos. they may not be as high quality as the new ones, but theres a style to it that i find a little more likeable, in my opinion.
Nice video, but let me correct you; we did not take a neutral chance during the Napoleonic wars. We took part in the war alongside Britain, against after Napoleon unleashed his continetal blockade. It was in this war that we lost Finland in 1809 since Russia (which took it) was in an temporarly alliance with Napoleon. After that, we pulled us out but joined the war again in 1812. We took part in the battle of Leipzig and later took Norway from Denmark which was allied with Napoleon.
6:24 you say only Poland and Russia decided to take advantage and attack. It was Denmark-Norway as well. 3 Nations in total, how the hell do you miss that? Wiki: "The initial leaders of the anti-Swedish alliance were Peter I of Russia, Frederick IV of Denmark-Norway and Augustus II the Strong of Saxony-Poland-Lithuania. "
Russia alone crippled the Swedes in Poltava, and raids in Finland (Finnish war) and the attack on the Swedish capital completed the Swedish empire's demise. There was no such thing as Poland. The Denmark-Norway alliance only fought minor battles on their own or nearby territory
As a swede I feel like I should explain some things. 1. To call Karl X Gustav incompitent is not just as he completely destroyed Denmark by crossing the ice covered Öresund, bringing in Skåne and Halland to the kingdom. 2. The importance of Karl XI is often overlooked. He managed to integrate the counqered areas from Denmark very efficently during his reign and keeping the peace, allowing the reform of the swedish army making it a true force to be reckoned with. The army was made professional and allowed the army to be quickly mobilized in case of war aswell as keep the soldiers morale very high. This is how his son managed to have the army he had. 3. The early stages of the great northern war are some of the most famous battles in Swedish history. Denmark was indeed in the war and was swiftly defeated trough the territories in Saxony and signed an armastice within a week. The battle of Narva 10 000 swedish soldiers held off and defeated the russian army of 40 000. Karl XII could have won the war if he had not spent as much time trying to puppet Poland-Lithuania. He also became over confident and marched on Moscow while the russians applied the famous tactic that would beat Napoleon and Hitler. Using the winter and burning of villages. After Poltava he escaped to the Ottoman Empire to recieve aid and ended up staying for several years. As he came back to Sweden Denmark had rejoined the war and during a siege of a fortress in Norway he got shot when inspecting the trenches.
Well, in theory, during the Viking era it was the Swedes who ensured the slavic tribes became organised and caught up to modern ( at the time) society and paved the way for the russian empire. So without Sweden, no russia.
I feel like your vastly understating Charles the Twelfth’s ability. He was an amazing general and took down Poland(installing a vassal state) and challenged Peter the Great.
Another interesting and entertaining video. But I did see and hear a few inaccuracies in the video: - Charles the 12th died in Norway during a siege, not in battle. There are theories about it being a Swedish noble doing the deed either to gain power or to end the war. - Denmark was a cobeliggerent of The Great Northern war from the start but was quickly dealt with before they rejoined after the Battle of Poltava. - Sweden/Finland did not lose Viborg/Viipuri as shown on the map in the Karelian Isthmus. Finland held that town and area until after the winter war. - Sweden owning Wismar is not shown on the map. It was sold in 1803. - It was not Denmark who gained german lands during The Great Northern War but Hanover and Brandenburg-Prussia. - Also worthwhile to add is that Sweden got rights to collect a big part of the tolls from merchants travelling through the Polish-Lithuanian rivers leading into the baltic.
Its also sad that the tactics of the Carolean army was not mentioned at all. Sweden had huge successes during The Great Nothern War in battles almost always outnumbered two to one thanks to these tactics.
But one of Napoleon General , Jean Claude Bernadotte , was appointed by the swedes to become a king. You forgot to mention that. He is the founder of Bernadotte dynasty of Sweden and Norway, where as in Sweden they now still rule . I don't think Sweden was neutral in Napoleonic war, because Jean Bernadotte changed allegiance to northern alliance and he prepared the tactic to fight his former boss.
There's is a story called (1632) written by a man named Eric Flint where a American town called Grantville travels back in time to the 30 years war in Thuringia Germany, And in one of the chapters makes a military alliance with the swedish king Gustavus Adolphus
4:18 I believe this painting takes place in 1812, not 1618-48. I think this was supposed to be during the battle of borodino but Napoleon is missing in this painting.
So I am a Swede and in this comment I will put timestamps in the video for corrections and more explanation c: 0:50 Partially controlled Sweden, Norway, and parts of Denmark. No direct control. Buut basically nothing back in time was direct control sooo... yeah. 1:15 To pronounced Vasa, think of it as the English word Vase. 2:20 Also known as Gustavus Adolphus II. Basically no one in Sweden calls him The Great. 2:40 Good joke but next time take a moment to find a Swedish driver's licence for extra fun. 3:25 I like to add to the text that the colonies in Africa and America were not long-lived due to Sweden's financial power compared to the Dutch and Brittish. 4:10 Now do not quote me on this but I think the doctrine Gustavus made was used all over Europe. I am not 100% on that though so if anyone knows better let me know. 4:40 Small note; There's speculation that the way Gustavus died was because an enemy soldier came up to the wounded king and asked him who he was. He answered that he was the King and the soldier shot him dead. That's the story at least. 5:10 Nice touch to make Christina cross-eyed. I am not sure if this was the intention but she was a Catholic. 6:20 Denmark was in that war. They joined but got their butt kicked at once by Karl but no including them is doing the Danes an injustice especially since later in the video you mention Denmark took land. 6:50 There's no speculation how Karl died. He was in a trench and not on a horse. He died leaning over the edge of a trench and said "Don't worry men, I am fine" or something like that. It was a shot from a pistol. Nobody to this day knows if it was a shot from an enemy or friend since the bullet wound is on the side and the bullet itself was probably a button from his coat, which was a piece of clothing he tore up on a daily basis. Conclusion. Good video. A Some misshaps here and there but to be honest no one is perfect and I think it was a great summary of the Swedish Empire.
Let me comment on your comments; It's Gustav II Adolph, or just Gustavus Aldolphus Charles was shot by a Norwegian soldier during the siege of Fredriksten, every other interpretation is pure unfounded speculation. In the words of a Swedish historian, "Charles the XII had been at war for more than a decade, and his luck had simply run out." In other words; if you stick your head above the parapet, you will get shot at some point
Interesting. Well done as usually Armchair Historian. I´m Swedish myself. When it comes to the 30 years war it was not as much a religious war at it has usually been described, because the goal for Sweden, and it´s ally, the predominantly catholic France, was to decrease the power of the Austrian emperor. Christina and Karl X Gustav was not totally incompetent. Actually Karl X Gustav increased the Swedish teritory, a lot, and in his days the Swedish empire was the largest it has ever been. In the video Karl XII is portrayed as having been killed in battle when he was on horseback, and hit in his chest. Actually he was standing in a trench, when being hit by a bullet in his head. It is true that the great Swedish empire ended with the great northern war 1700-1721, but at least Sweden was on the winning side against Napoleon in 1814, together with Russia, Prussia, Austria, Britain and others. However, as You mentioned, Finlad was lost to Russia. This was because in the year 1807 Russia temporarily switched side in the European conflict and supported Napoleon until war broke out again between Russia and Napoleon in 1812. It was a little like the Molotov Ribbentrop-pact when the Soviet Union supported Hitler in 1939-41. In 1808 Russia invaded Finland - like the Soviet Union did in 1939, so history partly repeated it self.
Minor Inconvenience which was just the animation but oh well I'm nerdy like this: Charles XII didn't die on a horse. On November 30th, 1718. the sky was dark. Fires on the edges of fort Fredriksten (now Halden) illuminate the town. The king rears up above the trench for the last time. a quiet thud hit the trench. The king lay there lifeless, with a projectile entering and exiting right through his head. Nobody knows who shot him to this day.
6:54 There's one issue with that statement. He was killed fighting *Norwegians* Don't get me wrong, Norway *was* in a personal union with Denmark from 1380 to 1814. But we where *not* a part of the Danish *kingdom* but rather a separate kingdom with the same monarch for most of our time under Denmark. We came under Danish controll in 1380 and till 1661 we remained a different realm with different laws, a different goverment etc, etc. Our separate "riskråd" ("The Council of the Realm"/"The Council of the State"/"Privy Council") wasn't abolished till 1536, and when Denmark-Norway implemented laws to become a absolute monarchy in 1660 we didn't start signing those laws into place in Norway till 1661. After 1660 (and among other things in 1718 when he was killed in Norway) we *where* a different ethnic group and different culture and while technically integrated the process was less then perfect to put it that way... Or in other words, in peoples minds Norway where still a seperate realm/entity even if it *technically* was integrated into the Danish Kingdom in 1660. So most people here would probably strongly oppose the idea that he was killed by Danes when he was in fact killed by a mostly Norwegian garrison of Fredriksten fortress. We where still a different *people*. That said, our shared king was essentially worshiped almost religiously so actually *leaving* the union was unthinkable for most of us.
You kinda skipped over the fact that "Queen" Kristina, the daughter of King Gustav II, abdicated and became a catholic and fled to Italy were she became a saint, here some of us see her as a traitor
Plus no one knows who killed King Karl XII, he was shot in the head while entrenched by the fort of Halden in 1718, theories are that swedish generals or soldiers shot him because they were tired of the war, and the man didn't spend much of his time as a ruler of Sweden in the country
Not very accurate at point where Gustav inherited 3 wars. Highlight of russia - at that time russia did not include the great duchy of lithuania, but in your map it was absorbing the whole baltic region. Seemed like you've rush it. Lovin the vids otherwise. Robertas
Nice that you are doing a video about Sweden! But I think it is missing some parts and it is a bit misleading. In this video it seems like Charles the twelfth was some random king that lost some land, in reality he was the greatest warrior king in Swedish history(Poltava is all the way in Ukraine, pretty far from Sweden, he did a hell of a war). Plus in the picture 6:56 it looks like he was killed by some sort of sword in chest, in reality he was shot in the head, who shot him is something that still today historians are debating,
So the question is, what makes a great king and who is the better king? Gustav II Adolf, the father of the modern military, who created the Swedish Empire, or Carl XIV Johan, who ushered in the two centuries of neutrality and peace (who was also a great general who also crushed Denmark once and for all, and brought Norway into a Union, something no other Swedish king was able to accomplish). So which is better, peace or glory? I think it is actually pretty neat that the Swedes had both, and Karl X and Karl XII to boot. Something for everyone.
He was a gambler who could have turned the country either into a great power or into a pile of burning ruins and have all lands taken over by foreign powers. I could admire his boldness and courage, but at the same time I do think that he was reckless and irresponsible with the country that he inherited by chance.
Great video to follow up the video on Peter The Great. I do feel however that Charles XII didn't receive enough coverage as he should of done. Like Gustavus Adolphus, Charles XII was an excellent tactician, being able to win against his opponents whilst outnumbered sometimes as much as 1-4 on many occasions such as at the Battle of Narva(1-3/4), and the Battle of Holowczyn(1-2). The reason why Sweden lost the Great Northern War is hotly debated, but it certainly wasn't because of Charles XII's tactics. The video i feel sweeps Charles XII under the rug as being this inexperienced child which he certainly wasn't, at least as far as his tactics are concerned. Overall though this is a good video that gives a basic view of the rise and fall of the Swedish Empire. Great work!
Charles XII wasn't present at the battle of Fraustadt, the swedish at that battle was commanded by Carl Gustav Rehnskiöld, in fact there are multiple swedish generals during the war that won battles against much larger armies even without Charles XII commanding personally.
One thing I am pretty certain is wrong was Karl's death. He didn't die in battle he died during the siege of a Danish fortress I forgot the name of while observing the Danish lines at night. A stray bullet killed him and nobody knows if it was a Dane who got a lucky shot or a Swede who wanted the war to end.
@@kstreet7438 That's not true, the reason they don't give detailed descriptions in an early stage of the investigation is because they don't want to influence witnesses. Have you ever reported a crime to the Swedish police? They ask you upfront for ethnic characteristics because they, unlike your claim, are more interested in actually finding the suspect than appeasing the cultural marxists. Also, have you read their reports on sexual crimes(googla "lägesrapport över sexuell brottslighet" eller någonting sådant, rapporten finns tillgänglig som pdf) and they're quite forthcoming in it. Also, the reason why they don't say afghan or middle eastern in relation to an outdoor rape is because we all already know that. You, me, the police and everyone else already jump to that conclusion anyway.
You missed one thing when Vasa took the churches the real treasure was not its gold but the clergy. With them he got the administrators who could read, and they had together every Sweden in thier books who could be taxed and was forced to attend church every Sunday. And the Swedes who is kollektive and not individuals just shrugged their shoulders and said sure we will be protestants with no civil war. With the clergy Vasa had control of the information, his own radio/tv at that time. The clergy could just say, the king needs more money so he can fight the danish Satan, and the Swedes would just go "Okey that sounds fine"
"Incompetence and Inneffectiveness" of Charles the 10th? say what? Also for Kristina this is somewhat of a stretch, she might have been ineffective but hardly incompetent. Also (6:27) It was not only Russia and Poland but also Saxony and Denmark that declared war on Sweden in the great northern war.
Kristina is seen by some Swedes as a traitor. Because of this, many were triggered when they announced that Kristina was going to lead Sweden in Civ 6. She was not necessarily incompetent, but she also did nothing notable in terms of combat. The only notable thing about her was that she knew how to read, which was uncommon for queens at the time. But that is easily outweighed by the facts that she abdicated her throne when she was like 26, converted to Catholicism when her father, Gustavus Aldolphus, died defending Protestantism, and eventually moved to Rome.
@@greninjamastergabe6452 A traitor? i think you are mixing 17th century swedish opinion with modern, today she is just a historical character like many others. Most of the comments concerning her aptitude and ampleness as a placeholder seems to be coming from foreigners such as yourself. And no, she did little notable (herself) in terms of combat compared to her father, like most kings. " The only notable thing about her was that she knew how to read, which was uncommon for queens at the time" - Dude, this is the 1600-hundreds not the freakin bronze-age! of course all queens learned how to read and write.

Yeah there was a battle between Sigismund and his uncle Charles 9th /Karl 9th
Nimroc
That is true. Even though the king took the heavy decisions as he became more experienced. (he also is said to be the last king to fight in the frontlines)

Fun fact:
During the later stage of the Great Northern War, thousands of swedish soldier surrendered and were held in Russian POW camps until the war ended.
Another fun fact:
After Poltava a couple of hundred swedish soldiers deserted and ended up in Hungary and by that time Hungary was in a war that was called ''Rákóczi's War of Independence'', it was a part of the '' Spanish Succession'' most of these Swedish soldiers conscripted as mercenaries.

"The initial leaders of the anti-Swedish alliance were Peter I of Russia, Frederick IV of Denmark-Norway and Augustus II the Strong of Saxony-Poland-Lithuania. "
Russia alone crippled the Swedes in Poltava, and raids in Finland (Finnish war) and the attack on the Swedish capital completed the Swedish empire's demise. There was no such thing as Poland. The Denmark-Norway alliance only fought minor battles on their own or nearby territory
5:10 gj giving the successors derpy eyes. lmao...

Another interesting and entertaining video. But I did see and hear a few inaccuracies in the video:
- Charles the 12th died in Norway during a siege, not in battle.
Fun fact: The queen Kristina said that women are unable to rule.

4:10
Now do not quote me on this but I think the doctrine Gustavus made was used all over Europe. I am not 100% on that though so if anyone knows better let me know.
4:40
Small note; There's speculation that the way Gustavus died was because an enemy soldier came up to the wounded king and asked him who he was. He answered that he was the King and the soldier shot him dead. That's the story at least.
5:10
Nice touch to make Christina cross-eyed. I am not sure if this was the intention but she was a Catholic.
6:20
Denmark was in that war. They joined but got their butt kicked at once by Karl but no including them is doing the Danes an injustice especially since later in the video you mention Denmark took land.
6:50
There's no speculation how Karl died.
Let me comment on your comments;
It's Gustav II Adolph, or just Gustavus Aldolphus
Charles was shot by a Norwegian soldier during the siege of Fredriksten, every other interpretation is pure unfounded speculation.

There's one issue with that statement.
He was killed fighting *Norwegians*
Don't get me wrong, Norway *was* in a personal union with Denmark from 1380 to 1814.

Plus no one knows who killed King Karl XII, he was shot in the head while entrenched by the fort of Halden in 1718, theories are that swedish generals or soldiers shot him because they were tired of the war, and the man didn't spend much of his time as a ruler of Sweden in the country
Last time I was this early Communism was a good thing
So I was never here
Joseph Krakowski poor meme 2/10
Joseph Krakowski u can do better than that, communism was only idea and no country actually communist

Oricand no country was ever communist ya know
Oricand Marx imaged something different from what happened in the east
So that’s what the Great Northern War was about. Learn something new every day. Love your channel.

Armchair: ... The incompetence of Christina...
Civ 6: hoho looks what great Emperor I found leading the Swedes
Iceland and the other islands above Scotland was actually owned by Norway not Denmark
Settled by Norwegians mostly, and part of the Kingdom of Norway from 1261 to 1814
Thank you, great video as always.
Not very accurate at point where Gustav inherited 3 wars. Highlight of russia - at that time russia did not include the great duchy of lithuania, but in your map it was absorbing the whole baltic region. Seemed like you've rush it. Lovin the vids otherwise.

Plus in the picture 6:56 it looks like he was killed by some sort of sword in chest, in reality he was shot in the head, who shot him is something that still today historians are debating,
Denmark formed an empire around 900-1000 hundreds ...
I was thinking the same too.. The Valdemar and Knud times as well ad the union
An even greater empire
You will find no result for a, "danish empire", if you Google after it.
And now all you have is Nicklas Bendtner and diabetes so cry me a river danskjävlar
And Sweden has IKEA, a "feminist foreign policy" and the highest Scandinavian rate of violent crime due to political incompetence. Good job ;)
Nicely done!
Maybe you could do a video on Denmark aswell?
So the question is, what makes a great king and who is the better king? Gustav II Adolf, the father of the modern military, who created the Swedish Empire, or Carl XIV Johan, who ushered in the two centuries of neutrality and peace (who was also a great general who also crushed Denmark once and for all, and brought Norway into a Union, something no other Swedish king was able to accomplish). So which is better, peace or glory? I think it is actually pretty neat that the Swedes had both, and Karl X and Karl XII to boot. Something for everyone.

Extra History did a great series on Charles and the Great North War
THE NORTH WILL RISE AGAIN!!!
@MenschGebliebenerWilly67 Have fun being a nazi in 2018
I wouldn’t call Charles X a bad king, he’s the one that gave us Scania among a lot of the other southern Swedish regions.
He was a gambler who could have turned the country either into a great power or into a pile of burning ruins and have all lands taken over by foreign powers.
I could admire his boldness and courage, but at the same time I do think that he was reckless and irresponsible with the country that he inherited by chance.

I wish my channel became an empire... Great work with the videos man! Keep it up!
I'm sorry but this feels to shallow and superficial.
It's an eight minute video, to be used as a basic introduction to the subject!

Ah yes, you're right. Battle of Helsingborg is another good example of that, Narva and Holowyzcyn still apply however.
The Swedish Empire is now stronger than ever. Allah wills it *raises finger*. The Swedish Holy Muslim Empire will prevail the infides.
Oh how Sweden has fallen.
aboyhasnoname that's not what I mean. In Sweden cops can't give descriptions of the suspect in fear of being racist
aboyhasnoname also all the rapes being ignored. It's sad how those liberals act. Like 4 Africans raped a 13yo girl they had charges dropped.
www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/swedish-police-are-not-allowed-to-give-descriptions-of-alleged-criminals-so-as-not-to-sound-racist-a6810311.html%3famp
And look at sweden nowadays
Wolves devolved into poodles?
@@samuelwaymon yeah but I don't know if that's an analogy or a question

@@samuelwaymon yeah that's mostly what I mean

Think she was 28 when she abdicated, not 26.
