  • The liquid limit (LL) It is defined as the percentage moisture content at which a soil changes with decreasing wetness from liquid to plastic consistency or with increasing wetness from plastic to liquid consistency. It is the water content at which a soil changes from plastic to liquid behavior.The plastic limit (PL) is the water content, in percent, at which a soil can no longer be deformed by rolling into 3 diameter threads without crumbling. In other words, it is the percentage moisture content at which a soil changes with decreasing wetness from the plastic to the semi- solid consistency or with increasing wetness from the semi-solid to the plastic consistency.

      Liquidity index. LI=(W-PL)/(LL-PL) where W is the natural water content.

      As per IS 2720 Part 5 , The specimens shall be of such consistency that the number of drops required to ~close the groove shall be not less than 15 or more than 35 and the points on the flow curve are evenly distributed in this range. The test should proceed from the drier ( more drops ) to the wetter ( less drops ) condition of the soil. The test may also be conducted from the wetter to the drier condition provided drying is achieved by kneading the wet soil and not by adding.
