Excellent video! I just did this starting exactly 1 week ago. First few days I did for 2-3 hours each night. Just walked around the house with sticks and every possible moment kept it going. Some observations 1) This really points out how weak your weak hand is. I discovered my left hand coordination was far inferior to my right and I'm certain this has hurt my single stroke rolls over the years 2) This also points out that there is subtle movement and pressure required in the thumb and forefinger to bring the stick back. Without relying on the rebound of the drum, the stick can just stay in close to the palm of your hand instead of returning to position. This was particularly prevalent in my weak hand, where as my dominant just did this naturally 3) Returning to the practice pad and implementing it with the same technique is challenging, even if you get good at it without the practice pad. But I plan to persevere as this is obviously crucial 4) After the 1 week mark, my weak hand is light years better than when I first started So I can't do it yet, but the progress I've made in 1 week is huge and I definitely plan to continue. Keep up the excellent vids! Want more :) If you ever take requests, I would love a followup to this video that shows how to take this to the next level and apply it to fast 32 note double stroke rolls (not buzz rolls, but rather full strikes). Thanks again!

@@stephanihab my advice when you start learning drums is practice coordination and drum rudiments. When playing drum set each limb is doing something different. @@tmaddrummer haha awesome 100%
My broken dash trim and vents can attest to this.
@@FoolTheViking haha I feel you on that 100%
@@FoolTheViking avoid the big fill when not on the throne to watch out for ur funny bone tho. I hit mine so bad twice within a few weeks of eachother that i wore elbow pads for a few months cause i was so paranoid. It always happened at the end of the roll with the final cymbal crash, so of course it was hilarious to everyone else. Couldnt feel my fingers for weeks. U know why they call it a funny bone?
Cause its name is humorous.
tried to play drums for decades...this is first time ewer someone like you show me the real technique.!!! thank you so much!!
You’re welcome. Yes this technique was taught to me during my high school years by Myles Overton III from the Army Band. 💯❤️🥁
I subscribed 2 years ago but lost you , your site popped up today..writing it all down now your site that is
Most drummers never explain it like this. You explained it with such detail and yet so simple and straight forward. There's nothing more cooler than a female drummer who actually really knows her way around the drums. I got my daughter playing the drums I know your video is going to incourage her more. Thank You!!!
Thought it was important to maintain a gap between your thumb and the side of your index finger, enough room to be able to slide a drum stick into that space, am I wrong?
That's true, keeping a little space so the stick can freely move, but you can still maintain control.
I love how you keep repeating the teaching, it is very helpful. Thank you for elaborating and continuing to teach.
You are so welcome!
"A week to a month" - translation 1-3 years for me.
I have taken drum lessons for what seems like forever and no one has taught me to hold the sticks correctly. That is, not until I found this video!!!!
Thank you thank you thank you! And God bless!!! 🥰
Your is so cute 🥰🥁🥁🥁
Thanks! #gratitudeshake
I LOVE YOU!!!!!! This has helped me so much! I will watch this over and over again to assist my practice. I wish I had your long slender fingers; your hands are absolutely beautiful. God sent you to do this!! and I thank you.
I'm just hitting flams all the time :(
Flams are good too =)
Yes flams are good too but if this is not what you want to do it's irritating...So maybe start slowly, really slowly if necessary, and (slowly again)increase the speed, don't rush. You can do it! You will do it!! Repetition fixes everything.
:-)
@@fredtrax4574 It fixes everything as long as you're repeating it correctly.
@@farshimelt YES obviously, this why I told him to start slowly, to avoid flams, R L R L R L R L R L R L R L R L R L R L R L RLRLRLRLRLR....slowly....capiche?
I resumed playing drums during the lockdown after a 38-year hiatus, and my wrists just aren't as supple as they were in my 20s when I stopped. I am always looking for hacks to minimize reliance on my wrists. This is a wonderful alternative. Thanks so much for posting it.
Watched a lot of vids on YT since I started just a year ago, but this is the first time I have seen that exercise with the stick inverted. It's brilliant.
I’ve been consuming A LOT of technique videos and this may be the best. The forearm practice is brilliant!
I've been playing drums for many years and I thought I had good stick control and technique.....I was wrong. This woman is by far the best when it comes to control and technique. Totally impressed.
Truly MAGICAL & HYPNOTIC!! I'm saving this video & passing it on to my 13 yo son (he's 2½yrs into Percussion in Middle School Band class. I really don't think they focus on technique. If so, then he'd be playing his electric set at home. He can play by ear, so that's fantastic.
More than 30 years in drumming... First time someone showed me that finger grip in detail... Wonderful teacher. Kisses and Baitabraço!
Awww... I am happy this was helpful. Cheers ❤️💯🥁
@@camiloops.official I'm already practicing your tip. I wish you the Best. Kisses and Baitabraço!
This is by far the best instruction on the single stroke roll. VERY VERY clear.
This is great stuff. The clearest explanation of finger technique EVER. Bless
Glad it was helpful! Bless you too!!!
She is 100% right on. I lost my right index finger in a table saw accident, but with the grace of God I had this technique and I still have my speed. Great video!! Thanks for sharing. You are a natural teacher.
Wow that's an amazing story. I'm super impressed you kept up your craft. Thanks for the compliments!
You're very good.... Totally following you from the Kingdom of Eswatini, Southern Africa.
You deserve over million followers!!!
This was the best finger control in drumming I've ever seen on TH-cam. Thank you.
This is spectacularly displayed! I don't know how many drum videos I have watched but its a lot. This is the first one where someone actually shows up close the underside of the hand to show how the fingers play their part. Simplicity is amazing
Wow thanks! Im so happy it was useful to you!!
52 years old & getting back into drumming as a passionate hobby. My fingers suck, but this video is making them better by the minute, cuz I know what they're SUPPOSED TO BE doing. Thanks for posting this! ✊🏿❤🔥🥁
That’s awesome!!!! I am so happy you’re drumming again and I’m happy this video was helpful. Have fun! God Bless 💯❤️🥁
Absolutely fantastic teaching. I have never come out of a training video so clear on what to do and how to feel a stick move. Now all I need to do is get better. Thanks.
Been drumming since 1993. Watched Dennis Chambers did something like this in 96 and didn’t get it until I watched this video. Thank you so much. Liked and subscribed ❤
Hi! Watching from Japan! I have played my drums and stop playing for almost 20years. And started to miss playing drums. So this lesson really help me catch up what I have missed.
Thank you!❤
Finally an in depth tutorial that most lessons just skip over. Thank you Thank you
Thank you so much for showing me your technique. You actually show exactly whats going on. I love the tip you threw in there as well about practicing on your fore arms. Im forever grateful ❤
I saw this video a year ago and couldn't stop thinking about how relaxed you are when playing the finger technique. I gotta get this! Thanks for posting! I will let you know how it goes!
Reversing the stick is old school and I spent many many days doing that when I was in school and that was a long time ago. I’m glad to see that you are teaching this. Thanks and Blessings!
Your the best teacher hands down.
Thanks so much 💯❤️
I am so glad I have discovered your tutorials! I have had had female students in the past and wish I’d had the luxury of 1st, the internet and 2nd YOU as an expert. I’ve have a saying, “If you’re going to goof off, make it pay off.” This exercise away from the pad or kit epitomizes such an activity. I could rave about you for much longer but will resist. Know this: You are the real deal and I am glad to have found your tutorials. Continued success and above all, I wish you Peace!
Superb video instruction! Other drummers who create instructional videos should take note that you continually are demonstrating technique while you explain verbally. Young lady, you get an A+!!!!
Why haven't I seen these techniques before - so valuable - for players of all levels. I'm excited about practicing again, thank you thank you!
wow, the best drum teacher on TH-cam. Merci mon ami from Toronto, Ontario.
Thank you, the techniques are getting clearer and clearer now. When I try them, I will certainly get back to you.
Yes you're the first ever drummer who show how the fingers work's in detail
It's soooooo much helpful 🙌
thanks i'm a 64 year old man and just started to watch drum videos and i learned a lot of things from your video that i never knew before. i do not own any drums yet just got sticks and messing around to see if i would like drums or not just useing the sticks and practice pad.
This video is gold. I watched so many videos on how to use my fingers instead of my wrists. And for some reason this really explanation really clicked. Thank you 🙏
75 years old always played traditional grip. Thanks for the tips, they work.
Ive Been playing for 30 + years and this is the first time I’ve Really understood how to Master these type of exercises to improve my fills and technique. Thank You.👍🥁👍
A FANTASTIC, Modern Rudimental lesson! Your inverted sticking technique - using the bottom of your forearms as natural feedback, and feel - can greatly aid in developing muscle memory much faster imo. This is a brilliant idea! *MASSIVE* Gratitude and Respect to you! Cheers!
Bingo! Spot on. So many demonstrating stick control miss the opportunity to speak to this very technique, of using the fingers and focus practice to this. As you said. It will happen just stick with it. Thank you.
One of the best instructional drumming videos I’ve ever seen….thanks for this!
This is absolutely brilliant! Like others, I have been playing most of my 70-odd years and this is the first and only time I have seen this explained clearly and understandably. You are a born teacher.
