Do you know the ghatams are made with so much effort like the clay for each instrument also travels some distance. It is collected from five or six pounds, dried for a day and then mixed with fine sand from the vaigai river.then graphite and lead are added to improve the tone. The clay is then stamped on for six hours and kept aside for two days. When it is stronger, it is ready to be cast into a pot. They sit in front of electric wheel, pats a lump of clay and places it on the center. As it turns, they quickly draws up the clay and shapes it with hands. When ready, a raw clay pot weighs a whopping sixteen kilograms. It is then handed to another person for finishing by beating it's sides. For the next couple of weeks, the ghatams is dried in the shade and then warmed for four hours under a fierce sun. Finally, yellow and red polishes are applied to the pot that it is then fired in kiln for twelve hours. It sheds means looses half of weight when baked. The result is eight kilograms of the clay that makes beautiful music It takes six or more years to learn this superb art The tricky part is tempering the ghatams to improve the tone, whacking the sides with their right hand. With their left hand they rotate a round stone inside the pot.thats to see that the wall does not collapse. Their hands hurt all the time.their pain shoots down from their exhausted shoulders to their finger tips. But a minute later, they pick up the wood and stone and adjusts the pot on their lap. The beating resumes. In manamadurai, meenakshi is fondly called the potter who got awards. A large gilt framed photograph shows meenakshi receiving the award from president of India. It turns out from the prestigious sangeet natac akademi. The akademi booklet lauds meenakshi's skill in making quality ghatams.it adds that hundreds of ghatams made by her travelled with performers all over the world. The pots now tend to be as players prefer them lighter, smaller, more elegant. They're easier to carry about, but ramesh her son points out. Manamadurai ghatams are still heaviest variety

Pot, not a vase :) The musical one is built to be an instrument.
In my opinion, no instrument compares to the Ghatam. The clay(Earth) mixed with Water and forged in Fire. The sound revrebates through the Air in the instrument. Thus you have a confluence of these elements(Earth+Water+Fire+Air), the very building blocks of the universe.
@@HardeepSingh-pu3pe Whoa whoa easy now. We Indians play/listen to rap, rock, metal and western pop too. Whats wrong if others pick up Indian music? Nothing wrong in it. It'll just become more popular.
Greetings, are you familiar with how the artist changed the pitch of the "Ghatams" that were on the side? Is this part of the molding/pottery stage or has water been added to the vessel?
My 3 months old baby stops crying listening to this audio. Thank you so much
