    On this day in 1887, six-year-old Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan have a communication breakthrough when she learns the word "water".

    Helen did a lot more than help handicapped people. She was a member of the Anti-Imperialist league, and spoke out publicly against the u.s. entering WWI. This was a very brave and dangerous thing to do. Eugene Debs got ten years in prison for the same thing. She was also a socialist and true friend of the labor movement- also dangerous back then.
    She was one of the very best progressives of her day, and would be still if she was alive.

      Those weren't her own beliefs though, they were her teachers. Her teacher just used Helen Keller to spread her own political beliefs. Helen Keller had no ideology, no beliefs, no thoughts, nothing, because she was BLIND and DEAF.

    Not only conquers 1 but THREE "disabilities " that would have displaced a person of her time 1. Of being deaf, 2. Of being blind, 3. Of being a WOMAN in want of an education! Amazing times, amazing woman.

    Even though she was blind and deaf her eyes seem so bright and full of life in these photos, and there is no color in these photos. Big eyes.

    This is one reason why vaccines are so important. If a pregnant woman gets measles, her baby may be blind and/or deaf. Please get vaccinated against all the awful illnesses e.g. measles German measles, diphtheria, polio, tetanus etc. Your doctor will tell you what to get vaccinated against. Helen Keller was well looked after but many deaf and blind people may have much more wretched lives because we are not so interested in them.

    Doesnt explain how a blind person could learn braille. Dont mean to offend but this doesnt explain how

    • @naraufiqa
      @naraufiqa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Braille let you know the word by *touching* , not hearing, or seeing. She learnt how to spell words by touching the dots. Well, you can't hear dots. You can see dots but its by moving your finger through the dots you will be able to spell it. Well if she can see she doesn't have to use the braille i guess, just use the books instead.

    Hellen Keller’s entire story is complete bs. I mean seriously, a women who was blind and deaf was able to do all that, yet somehow in the last 120+ years not a single other blind and deaf person has reached a level even close to Hellen Keller. Isn’t it convenient that every single one of her political beliefs and views lined up perfectly with her teacher’s, Anne Sullivan. Anne Sullivan also spoke for her, at a completely normal speaking pace while Hellen apparently signaled every letter out by touching Anne’s hands. You might hate to hear it, but everything Hellen Keller ever “said” was just Anne’s own words, that she pretended were Hellen’s. Think about it.

      She also learned verbal speech, as a quick search would reveal. There are videos of her speaking her own words, although they are sometimes unclear since she never heard a single word.

    • @tracesprite6078
      @tracesprite6078 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Helen did speak herself. It's not surprising that they had similar views because they spent so much time together. Helen was also able to type on her Braille typewriter. Helen may have been extraordinarily intelligent. Other blind and deaf people may also reach some level of competence but, as always, we select one person for special attention and then ignore most others. Probably the best thing to come from these TH-cams would be for us to ask our politicians what is being done for those born blind and deaf. Are we providing them with good education and support? Also we should encourage the use of the measles vaccines as pregnant women who get measles can give birth to blind and/or deaf babies.
