Love how diverse you are in your musical tastes. As I always say, there are no bad genres in music only bad music in all genres... And the more you allow yourself to push yourself out of your comfort zone the more great music you’ll find!
Thank so much for your modesty, knowledge and Passion!

Wonderful selections and great to get your perspective on music of your homeland. Beautiful music and some of my most favorite albums you've shown. Neu and Can are the pinnacle but I'm also a huge fan of Harmonia, Ash Ra Tempel, Cluster, the Roedelius solo works and a few more obscure ones like Gunter Schickert and Kalacakra. Wonderful video!

Thanks to Bureau B and Grönland Records (and others) I was able to get many of the rare releases i great quality. What is sad is that Kraftwerk will not repress the two traffic cone releases nor the Ralf & Florian album. I’d really like to get some official remasters instead of the pirate pressing I have now.

Great video. A band from this time that is always left out when considering such considerations is TRIUMVIRAT. They did great Prog Rock in the vein of Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Her albums "Illusions on a double dimple" and "Spartacus" are outstanding. We could make a lot more videos to go with 🇩🇪extraordinary music from the 70s. Thanks for that. Grüße aus Hannover

Thanks for this video. I have only recently discovered Krautrock. While I had heard the term, I had not heard any before about a year ago, when my Roon radio started playing some Faust, and then some Can. I was gobsmacked. I can’t believe that I have missed it for so long as it really appeals to me. I am now building my Krautrock collection, starting with Can, Faust and Neu!

Looking forward to a future installment where you can discuss Faust and maybe some Ash Ra Temple and Harmonia. Pretty shocked at the prices of Faust on Vinyl - uncertain where to begin other than perhaps the 1st LP.

I can feel your pride while speaking about Krautrock. That time frame produced a real renaissance of German artistic creativity with all of those Krautrock groups. Michael Rother is a favorite. Julian Cope wrote a nice primer on Krautrock. Also, Wim Wenders, Warner Herzog and Fassbinder directed some of the most inventive independent films of the day, all had great soundtracks.

Great video, Michael! Krautrock has been the leading genre of what I have been seeking out the past several years. My collection is still somewhat small (a lot of reissues) but I love all of the bands your mentioned. Guru Guru Känguru and Wallenstein Mother Universe are very high on my want list. I'd love for you to continue on. I'm also interested in how some of these bands changed over time some going into more progressive rock some deeper into electronic, ambient, etc. In your opinion is there a cut off year where krautrock ends? I'd love to see more of your Krautrock collection.

Hello Michael. I wondered what you called Krautrock in Germany and now I know lol. I'm a huge fan of Manuel Gottsching especially the E2-E4 album. I actually discovered it first by hearing the remake by Sueno Latino in the late 1980's and later realized that was actually a cover version. Also yes I know schlager music, I don't know why but a lot of the LP's seem to end up in English charity shops. I will buy them and send you them all back if you want Michael lol!

If you compare the drum sound of Neu with that of Never Mind The Bollocks you will notice: Klaus Dinger was not only the Godfather Of Techno. And concerning this topic: Not only Mr. Bowie but generations of bands have loved and absorbed the sound and made all the Krautrock bands even more popular.

Germany has always had some fantastisc bands that had made a huge contribution to the world music scene. You are right to put that in that context. I got into it a long time ago after a show on Swiss television with some new german more electronic bands: i saw Rheingold who inpressed me extremely (They are somehow related to Kraftwerk), i also got that neue deutsche welle compilation. I only really got into Kraftwerk after seeing them
    I. Montreux like 15 years ago. The book by Julian cope opened my mind and When i did my fellowship in Boston a friend made me discover Tangerine Dream. Then i got into Neu! With that weird Neu4! I Think it was called on captain trip records. All the stuff is just great. All that Plank did was very special. I always look into german stuff When i go from switzerland to sweden. There is always some great stuff. I had some difficulty with can But guys like the krupps and einsturzende do great stuff and There is even more. Oh and There was x-mal deutschland: That was my first new wave concert in Geneva, they played after Pete SHELLEY of yhe buzzcocks and i lost quite a bit of hearing there. Simply great stuff. Also that e2-e4 by what’s his name is mind blowing. Keep up the great stuff!!!!!

Hi, I love your channel, this is my first time commenting on any of your videos, but I found you through Norman Mazlov. I enjoy most of the bands you mention in this video. A newer, and by newer I mean mid 1980s and beyond) krautrock band that I love is Pink Turns Blue, they had an amazing album called If Two Worlds Kiss released in 1987 then in the early 90s they became a bit more goth but have since returned more to the gritty krautrock sound that they started out with. Anyhow, if you haven't heard them, you should check them out.

Michael, as always thank you for sharing your music. To be honest, I purchased a copy of Neu! '75 because I was very curious about your thoughts concerning the song 'Hero' and its implications. First off, I've known about Neu! for years but never took the dive. I'm very glad I did. I now have to go and get more of their catalog so BIG thanks for that.
Second, although I understand the sharing of the word "hero" and the apparent irony of that concerning how huge David Bowie's version was but I think you're being a little too sensitive about the issue. When I first put the record on I was expecting a sustaining drone (like Bowie's) but instead I heard a great song titled 'Hero' by Neu! I don't think it really matters that Bowie chose 'Heroes' as his title. Again, if the music was more of a direct ripoff of Neu's I would be sympathetic to your resentment but, again, I think you may be just a little geographically sensitive.
    Keep sharing!

A very cool genre that goes much deeper than I initially thought. I've been a little reticent about using the term Krautrock as it sounds a bit dismissive. You were talking about Schlager. At least I live in America and spared from it but I heard a little and it's awful, the kind of stuff to find its way into the Eurovision Song Contest. While not exactly Krautrock, but the Scorpions wanted Frank Bornemann of Eloy to produce their second album Fly to the Rainbow because they were scared a producer known for Schlager was going to produce the album. Luckily Frank did produce the album but he wasn't credited due to label reasons (Eloy was on EMI/Harvest, Scorpions were on RCA).

Bowie always stole ideas and styles. He was a svengali of sorts.
