    Excellent analysis. I consider Johan and Chris Horner (chesterfield/knucklehead😉) the two best cycling commentators - with maybe Bruyneel having the edge, because of his sources, and his 'inside baseball' analysis 👍

    If you look closer, Abrahamsen didn’t just gain 20 kg; he also grew a couple of inches. This wasn’t simply an intentional transformation from a lean climber by adding muscle. It was due to delayed puberty caused by dietary restrictions and intense training. He was essentially trapped in a middle schooler’s body and only developed his natural adult body shape by removing some restrictions and letting nature finish its job. You can't just start feeding a grown-up climber like Bardet, add 20 kg, and suddenly make him a Roubaix contender-it doesn’t work like that.

    Also a comment about the stage with the gravel sectors, Road racing has a time cut. If you don't make it to the finish within the time your TDF is over. Gravel races and the logistics of getting bike changes and assistance could turn this upside down. What if the same rider has multiple issues? How are they going to work it out so no rider gets tossed out of the race? I see a lot of equipment failures possibly if weather conditions are bad. And we know there is going to be crashes. It is just unnecessary to put gravel sections in the TDF.

    i agree and disagree with johan on many things but i think his point is way off on the gravel stage. the tour de france is bike racing, not only road racing. for many years, mainly in mountains the roads were not even paved, “gravel like” if you will. also makes the tour more complete, needing the skills to survive/race a parkour like this makes a worthy test in a race that’s supposed to represent the biggest test in the sport

    Hey Johan, 99.7% of the people that watch this podcast are fans watching it on TV. And if they are anything like me, they like things like the gravel sections added to the Tour. Since I'm not working on any team, I really don't care how much more challenging it is for any of them. In fact, I like it better if it's harder and more challenging for the teams. I makes it that much more interesting to watch. And let's face it, anything they can do to make the non-mountain stages more compelling is a better watch for me, the guy sitting at home watching on TV.

    @guylaub8505 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    Its the first time I hear Johan give a bad take which is really surprising (maybe it's just because he hates EF manager ;) )
    The EF Tactic was pretty obvious. They knew they didn't have a chance to win the stage with such a small breakaway of only 3 people with 5-6 sprint teams chasing them. When the lead went up to 2 minutes and they were only 3 they intentionally dropped from Abrahamson, because they wanted more people in the breakaway. They didn't want to waste energy just "to be in the breakaway", they aren't competing for the polka dot jersey but for a stage win. With a strong and big breakaway they might've had a chance today. Abrahamson on his part didn't want more people in the breakaway because all he cares about are the polka dot jersey points so he didn't mind to pull hard.
    When the 2 EF guys dropped from Abrahamson (intentionally) Bettiol and Healy were pulling hard on the climb to close the gap and encourage more teams like IPT or Trek who didn't have a sprinter to join the breakaway. In order to make a bigger breakaway with a better chance to win. I was actually surprised no other team tried to join the breakaway at that part.
    In my opinion, EF did they right call, they tried to go on a breakaway with a big group. When they saw it didn't work they adjusted and tried to make the breakaway bigger and then they made the right call to call the guys from the breakaway back in order to not waste energy on a breakaway that didn't have a chance.
    The only bad call that might hurt them was that they pulled too early for the breakaway in the flat/descent instead of waiting for the climb which might've cause a bigger breakaway in the first place.

      @guylaub8505 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@PazLeBon That's hypothetical, with 3 guys in the breakaway the Peloton wouldn't give the breakaway 6 minutes. The reasons they gave Abrahamson so much time is so no one else joins the breakaway and it's easier to manage. They calculate pretty easy how to catch a breakaway if there are few riders, when the breakaway is big then it becomes hard to manage time.
      The goal is to always catch the breakaway around 10-20km to prevent further attacks.
