240mph speeds , multiple chassis and engines , packed grandstands , legendary drivers , titles going to down to the wire. f1 had more money and eyeballs but this was the greatest racing in the world . who would have thought within a few short years the exodus of teams , manufacturers and fans would have finished in cart bankruptcy
@@huguesmartel4798 Probably would look a bit like the Indycar of Today to some degree, they probably would of shifted to Turbo V6s, maybe even Hybrids to follow the trends of other open wheel series. Assuming there may have been more manufactures, maybe it would be like a mix between F1 and modern Indycar
Really difficult to say. In 1999 TCGR struggled a little bit with the Reynard Honda (just look how poor Jimmy Vasser performed in 1999 compared with previous seasons where he was always in the mix for the wins and top championship finishes) and I don't think Montoya didn't get the credit he really deserved for the campaign. Also, Honda engine in 2000 had a tougher opposition from Ford and Toyota. Except for the grenade they used in De Ferran's car for qualifying in Fontana, for the most part of the season they were behind of Ford and Toyota in top horsepower and their advantage was mainly to the superior driveability and consumption. Penske performance in 2000 and 2001 came from the fact they used their expertise and resources to upgrade Reynard chassis to the point where basically only the monocoque was original. That said, I think if TCGR would have kept the Reynard Honda package, Montoya probably would have fought for the title without the reliability issues and lack of performances on road courses he had to face while driving the Lola Toyota, but top overall performance could have been inferior.
R.I.P. Gil de Ferran (1967-2023) 💔😥

Never been the same
No kidding...sad my kids will never know the racing, the speed, and the roar of the fire breathing turbo v8s!
at the time, that was surely the best series. wonder how CART would look like today if the split with IRLdidn't happen

1:29:48 This whole conversation about aerodynamics is why I loved Page/Johnstone/Gerald. So insightful.
One of the best races EVER!!
Gil de Ferran, the greatest Brazilian champion after Ayrton Senna’s era.
The average speeds in the RACE were in the low 230s…and they still went three wide. Amazing.
Race starts at 11:54
One year after Greg Moore
Exactly.
You can see all the recently installed tarmac at the exit of turn 2 :(
one of the best of the best guys I ever had the pleasure of meeting
Imagine chip ganassi could have stayed with Honda .

Gil de Ferran pole position, winner
Sad to see the stands so empty after just 1 year ago they were jam packed...
On day one the stands were very packed. Day two was never going to be packed since it was Monday.
Ah yeah I didn’t remember it was rain delay 😊

This is actually Sergio Perez! At that time, Sergio's father, Antonio Perez, was Adrian Fernandez's manager.
Of course they couldn’t just call him Juan Montoya in nascar lol
