- I rode the standard MT-10 a few weeks ago and absolutely loved the bike. So naturally I needed to test the SP model.
Join me for a ride around on this fantastic machine and I will let you know all about it and if I think its worth the extra money over the standard version.

Chopsy your a mind reader… I was praying that you were going to test this bike… Brilliant!!!
Great enthusiasm Chopsy! The ergo's are definitely more 'roady' than the other nakeds but rotate the bar risers 180 degrees and it does feel a bit more sporty. I've bought aftermarket risers which are 10mm lower than standard which helps even more. If you want more sporty still, lower the front/raise the fork legs in the yolks... As for the brakes, the pads can be changed to EBC HH or similar for more initial bite . Coming from the BMW S1000R, it was pretty much the first thing to address... The pads definitely help. They do sound good but even a small can and disconnecting the exhaust valve cables (locking the valve open) makes it even better, without going super loud with a decat... Looking forward to the Tuono comparison vid :)
I don’t know why you’ve done it, and neither do we. But thank you for showing this in MPH instead of KMPH. The states thank you very much.
Because he’s in the uk. They use miles per hour
What a machine. Love the SP. That suspension is just amazing for the extra cash. Definitely one to consider for your next bike Chopsy. Great review as always 👍🏻
Great vid again sir, also it was good to see how fast the tiny stones flick off your tyre 4:30 👍👍👍
Yes Chops, everyone should experience the MT-10 SP, I Love mine. Looks like you were having fun even with the traffic. Quick shifter and blipper work a treat on the road but I think you may find the blipper a bit slow to respond on track. It's definitely set up for road use and not banging down the box on track.
Great review again Chops, can't wait for the Superduke & MT10 comparison.
Awesome video! Had my 10 for 3years and almost 50000kms. Zero issues, best bike I've ever had. I sorted both the seating position and lighter front end by getting a kit that lowered the handlebars by ~5cm, it did wonders to my feeling on the bike. Thinking about getting the new SP cos of the updated electronics, up and down QS (only have up now) and Ohlins suspension. Just chuck an exhaust system on it, heated grips, some crash protectors from R&G and call it a day for at least the next 10 years.
You sorted the seating position by lowering the handlebars around 5 cm, but how did that make the front end lighter ? And also how did you lower the handle bars ? There is no way to lower them that I could find except to change out for another handlebar or did you lower it in some kind of way with how it is mounted to the suspension ? I have heard someone else mention that before but It was not something that Yamaha could help me with at my dealer and it sounded kind of complicated.
I would get the new standard MT-10 if it was not so damn ugly and I could lower the bars or something to get a more sporty riding position because it is just to straight up as it is and the riding position does not fit a sportbike or even a sport touring bike in my opinion. The front is way worse than the first gen bike. I just can not get around how ugly the front lights look. The first gen was not a beaut but at least it looked better and more brutal, and brutal was never beautiful . Anyways except the Öhlins suspension you get the same electronics and up/down quickshifter on the standard bike so that would suffice for me.
And add some track / road brake pads from SBS 😎🏁🏁
@@mathias6423other way around, he was putting more weight over the front.
Love the engine of the MT10 it's a real peach. The only reason I didn't get one was purely based on the way it looks but that's just my personal opinion, and the other reason was fuel range at the time, but I know yamaha have now addressed this issue . Definitely a hooligan machine.....what a blast.
Great review again Chops 😊👍
Brilliant review chopsy of the Yamaha sp,have the standard one this years love it
About three weeks ago Yamaha was over at Edwards Motorsports Council, Bluffs, Iowa demo day I Road the Yamaha MT 10 SP amazing. I got so many motorcycles now, but I still want one of those as 64 years old. I still get that big, adrenaline rush out of the horsepower
Great review, think you nailed it 👍🏼
You can always put on a lower bar If needed.
Thankfully this Gen 2 model (2022+) comes with titanium headers, so all you need is a link pipe and a nice silencer and you have a full titanium system. Get it flashed or dynoed and you won’t believe how much better the bike is. Euro 5 is an abomination but easily fixed on this bike.
Apparently the akra header pipes have a different shape and h-pipe location to make more power, but it's probably marginal... so changing link pipe is probably enough for most people.
Had mine done by Sam west in stoke on Trent. Decat and a dyno, 165bhp at the rear wheel
Just bought one and love it. In my opinion you would be mad to buy the base model instead of the SP. Steel braided lines is almost reason enough, then toss in the belly pan, paint job, semi auto suspension and it’s a no-brainer. You mentioned that pre-load cannot be set. You probably just meant it cannot be set electronically but obviously it can be set manually the old fashioned way.
Tmax 560 tech max, Tracer 9 GT+ and MT-10 Sp, all I need in this life 😀
Fantastic review Chopsy. Pure fun and definitely putting a smile on your face. Like you say, old school streetfighter, like back in the 90’s. Fairing off, a pair of MX bars and away you go👍👍
By the way, what happened to the review of the KTMsmt ?
Started watching yesterday and now disappeared?
Keep the reviews coming. 👍
It will be back soon sorry 👍
Worth it IMO. I have one and with a few taps i can go from chill to spirited riding.
Finally you're testing the bike I've bought! I've changed the brake pads, and I can say the brake feel is waaaaay better now, also on track. So for less than €100 you can bring them up to "European standards". Easily bought with the money you save by not using the front tyre on the gas hahaha
Yamaha do themselves a huge disservice with the way they present the brakes on their bikes from the factory. It's reasonably easily improved but they feel so wooden next to the competition when you go for that test ride.
Couldn’t agree more. A set of Brembo SR pads or similar, some good quality brake fluid (I use Motul RBF600 or 700) and a good bleed, and then there is nothing at all wrong with the brake setup on this bike.
@@MrDeepseadweller ah yes, I forgot to mention the RBF 600 as well, thanks!
Great review, great bike
I wish the SP came in the CYAN STORM colours as well. I love the cyan coloured wheels and the flash on the tank.
Hi just had mine decatted and remapped sounds and performs even better than factory brilliant bike.
I always enjoy when your voice changes when you say "roll the into
Gotta get me one of these. Need to part with my beloved Thunderace however and thats gonna be heartbreaking but this bike....yum!!!
Looks like the Beachside Cafe nr Weymouth? Looking forward to this next vid Chopsy oh and another great review mate.
Yes think it is called that 👍
Another great review.
Need to get out on o e soon as.
It's a toss up between this or an S1000XR as my next tourer.
Nice review chopsy…that’s the only bike I’d chop my gen1 XR in for. I binned my MT10 whilst hooning in the Pyrenees a few years ago and to this day I have not ridden a bike to match it for all round hoonability.
I’ve been waiting for this chopsy!!! Mt09sp next?
Will try and sort it 👍
As someone who wants a Streetfighter V4s but can't afford one, this MT10 is probably going to be my next bike. I've had my fun on my 636, but the seating position just sucks for the road
I’m feeling the same way with my zx6r. It’s such a good bike, but my back doesn’t like it anymore
You’ll cry less if you crash it on track and it’s so reliable too. I don’t think you’re missing out.
I rode an SDR and MT10 back to back a few weeks ago and much preferred the Yamaha. The Yamaha is so much more comfortable for me. And I love the way it builds into the power as you rev it out compared to the immediacy of power on the superduke. The unbeatable bottom end of the SDR is quite something else to experience, but you really feel it start to fall off through the mid range and falls really flat into the top end. Now I know that's just the nature of a big V and I'm not complaining. I just prefer the way the CP4 builds and delivers the juice. Even though it's a bit slower than the KTM it's still a bucket load more power than anybody *needs* on the street and it still has a strong bottom end to get ya going. Mt10 is the easy pick for me. I'll have a new MT10SP in my garage the day my current bike gets scooped up by its next owner. Oh and the SDR had been my dream bike for some years before I rode it. Funny how that worked out 😂
Im the same way the KTM is my dream bike but after reading your comment probably just stick with my 10 Ive done alot of work with my MT dont know if I want to go through tgat again with SDR i guess there was a reason I wanted the MT-10 to begin with besides I love the way the Yamaha looks
I agree I prefer the MT-10 as well even If I think the top end on the Super duke is still insane for a V-twin and does not fall flat
I always find my dream bikes after testriding them, not by look alone, the look is not the most important thing. However the new MT-10 is just too damn ugly in the front I do not know what Yamaha thought when they put that headlight on so that bike I could never buy.
@mathias6423 well it's all relative. Maybe flat is the wrong descriptor but it's noticeably softer pulling the higher you rev it. As fast as it is, for me it's a very dissatisfying way to climb through the gears. Looks are subjective, I have actually owned a gen 1 mt10 and thought it was hideous, but I didn't care because I don't have to look at it when I ride. I did grow to like it but I think the gen 2 does look a bit better. Both gens and all gens of the sdr are pretty polarizing in the looks department.
@kevincraig8257 hey I'm just some guy from the internet don't let me sway you. We all prefer different things and the SDR is still a fantastic bike. You absolutely gotta go ride one to find out for yourself what it's all about.
@nwmotog I do appreciate other peoples thoughts because I have to travel quite aways to even see these different bikes so depending on circumstances my mind is 90% or better made up over 400 miles to see the V4s and the same for the Factory had to travel 500 miles round trip just to get the MT-10 I bought it in December of 2020 and couldn't go pick it up until May of the following year rode it back home 250 miles I was 61 loved every mile of it. the KTM dealer here does have a 2023 EVO I figured it would have sold the minute it hit the floor but no maybe its the 20 grand price tag I dont know or maybe people around here dont really know what it is heard rumors of a 1300 maybe wait and check it out
Crash protection? Have Yamaha been talking to Kawasaki? 😉
😂
I was about to say the same thing 😅
They might have seen the ZX10R video..
GB Racing case protectors are in the Yamaha accessories now.
@@bryanhaynes8761 I think it went over your head.
Nice ride lovely countryside.
Love the mt10. Probably the most fun I’ve had on 2 wheels. Absolute hoot. The SP looks absolutely superb
Couldn't agree more!
Full system sounds the nuts.
At the time I bought my standard MT10 there was a deal on at there was a £4k difference. Since then I've seen the SP offered for £2k under their regular price. That might of tempted me at the time but I'm more than happy with my standard bike. The fully adjustable suspension is pretty good once you spend some time setting it up. It's such a great bike and for me captures the essence of biking when you ride it. It might not ooze the desirability of its European competition but it's no lesser bike when it comes to riding fun and is probably a better ownership experience financially.
@@Inquisitivemind97 Well LCR believes the big red Italian brand is now one of the most reliable and I don't doubt him. They've had a reliability boost from their German connection so I can believe it. Can't necessarily say the same for the other Europeans but generally they're all pretty good these days.
That's a thing of the past. Most modern European bikes are well reliable now.@@Inquisitivemind97
The 2017 Blade was the first with EC2 Ohlins as far as I know and the same configuration options as this
I agree with what you say about the chassis, they do like to wheelie, but they feel safe and controlled doing it, whereas the Super Duke feels more dangerous, to me at least, although I love that bike too.
Great bike the mt 10. Got a 2019 mt 10 would like the sp but yamaha only do one colour wich is a shame. Got the ice flou at moment. Good review.
I'm running a fulll system on mine and it does sound absolutely glorious
Enjoy! I bet it does!
It's a great machine but the MT lineup is just nauseating to look at for me. Great review as always Chops, keep it up.
Pyramid Plastics do a matching infill panel to go over the frame, looks a lot better.
I bought one of these last year. I'm 6' 3" tall & find the handlebars a bit too close to my chest (I doubt riders under 6' would feel the same). I fitted the optional Gilles risers to move the bars forward & down a little but the issue persists. I suppose it should be no surprise given the bike is derived from the R1 & has a relatively short wheelbase. This aspect of the bike doesn't ruin the ride but it does affect my confidence through the bends.
4 finger clutch; 2 finger brake. Is the clutch pull tough or is that your preference? Thanks for the videos!! Cheers!
Why oh why don't Yamaha produce an XSR1000. It's an obvious thing to do. Many people do not like the looks of the MT10. They do it on their smaller models so why not the 1000. It is just daft and they are loosing sales because of it.
If only it didn't look so ugly!! Can they not do a retro Yammy racing colour scheme?
If only the Triumph Speed Triple RS had the latest Öhlins electronic suspension and the electronics package from that bike... It would be perfect.
Chops could you post the suspension set up you used would be useful for anyone with an SP
Like a lot of people I didn’t go for one due to the way it looks. Opted for the CB1000
Chopsy you need to start trying to get some slightly modified, tuned, exhaust, rearsets blah blah vs the Standard SP. That would be cool.
If Yamaha made an adventure sport version of the MT-10 to compete with the 1290 SAS and S1000XR with more update to date features and tech... I'd be there.
Great review chops as always seems a great bike but I just can’t get into the look of it not something I would look back at on the pub car park or in the garage 😢 just my opinion Pete
Good vid as always, thanks.
As a track bike, can the semi auto suspension be switched off to keep a setting?
Yes, it has 3 auto modes and 3 manual modes. In the manual modes it will not adjust your preset settings.
@@MrDeepseadweller Ok, thanks 👍
You dont get brembo M4 monoblock calipers? But you get Öhlins suspention?
hope u ride the mt 09 sp soon too.
Chopsy, got a chance to saw your videos regarding ktm super duke 1290, my question is which do you prefer this mt10 or super duke?
Great hooligan bike 😁
re: crash protection
Maybe Yamaha watched the ZX10 video 😂
It'd be good if they did a Tracer version like they do with the 07 and 09
Nice bike. 👍
I have the previous generation MT10 SP and its absolutely brilliant i traded my Superduke R in for one. Its a do everything bike from touring in comfort to scratching up the A and B roads. I put a ProRace end can on mine and the sound is to die for. In my opinion a much better built bike than the gen 2 Superduke and that Yamaha reliability is reassuring. Be interesting comparison the latest versions of each one looking forward to it.
Funny i also did that about 3 years ago.
I got The 2022 mt10 sp now.
Suspension is better on the new.
More stable and predictible.
I also like The new look better 😊
Waaait hol up.
The shock preload on this is manually adjustable? You've got to get in there with two spanners to change lock nuts, or what?
Apparently, a lot of MT-10 owners, run them in 'B-mode'.
It gives a less snatchy throtle?!
IMO, MT-10 and Aprilia RSV-4, are the best sounding bikes, on the road!
Just my opinions 😊
I didn't find it snatchy at all even in A mode, just nice and direct
I don't know if I've picked you up wrong, but you get the same electronic package on the base bike, also the base bike also has a brembo master cylinder (shows how much notice you took 😅) at the time I got my base version (cyan storm) Yamaha were chucking in £1000 of free kit 👍 as for sound, I've just bought a Leo Vince decat pipe, and will be getting it reflashed, it makes a difference when this is done, both for sound and performance, check out, Moore mafia in the states, one more thing, the headers and end can on both mt10's are titanium, so really you don't need to go down the full system route, just dump the cat box and reflash...
Problem for us EU users is that we can't delete the cat anymore without risking a major fine and the possibility the police takes our bike. Also there are a lot of area's where we can't ride with an open exhaust anymore (on a social level it isn't acceptable anymore and because of noise more and more roads gets closed for motorcycles)
There are two Leo Vince mid pipes, one for the gen 1 and one for the gen 2. Don't suppose you have a part number?
The bike would be a thrill to ride but my drivers license would be taken away from me for having to much fun , Thanks Chops
If I couldn't have my two bikes (Tuono V4 Factory + S1000R Sport) I'd have this as my one bike, as it does a bit of what both those bikes offer...
I had one chops. Brilliant bike, a bit heavy on fuel.. If you go easy on the right hand fuel economy is ok.
bad mouths say mt10 is coming from empty tank 😅
All things considered, the mt10 is my ideal bike, but I can’t seem to love it like a Speed RS. I’d love to see a comparison between those two!
I honestly thought Triumph dropped the ball with the new 1200 Speed. The suspension is too stiff and the electronics let it down badly. No doubt it would beat most of the competition on track. As a road bike, I feel it’s not ideally suited. Great looking bike though
If the MT10 only had good looks (the R1 looks killer and the MT10 is the retarded little brother). If triumph gave the Speed RS electronic suspension and a more complicated electronic package (separate traction control and wheelie control for example) I would buy one.
Pull your finger out and do a comparison between the SDR Evo and Tuono factory!
What was the seat like Chopsy? I had the 2017 model and the standard seat was naff. I upgraded to the comfort seat in the end.
Yeah it's a bit thin, so comfort seat needed
I have the 2019 standard with cat delete block offs tail tidy flash will be putting a deposit on the 2024 SP trade in is like giving the bike away so Im going to keep the 2019 standard maybe sell it maybe not ill keep them both maybe my wife will ride it from time to time giving her MT-07 a rest for thr money Yamaha builds the right bike for the right price
Yamaha must have seen your track incident on the ZX-10R😕
Be interested in your opinion on both as had my Gen 3 Superduke for 3 years, and the 10 SP could be an option if I don’t keep it.
You're downgrading to a Yamaha
@@countbrapcula-espana 😂 Don’t know yet, I’ve never owned an inline 4 as hate the sound of them, but the CP4 sounds a lot better.
I may just keep the Superduke as it’s a great bike, and do some upgrades.
What happened to the last video. It was deleted ? Was enjoying it.
Will be back soon sorry 👍
Mannnnn I miss my MT-10!!!!! 😢
Just go a for a professional CPU tune to remap the fuelling (ideally with a sports air filter and a full performance exhaust system fitted first) - it will be like day and night!
Also, upgrade the brake pads to „track / road“ and you are good to go!
Can the new MT10 be mapped? I heard it wasn't possible yet because of euro5 reasons.

Anyone here has any review on the engine heat? is it unbearable for long distance ride on a 2023 MT10 SP? I'm trying to get feedbacks on the heat issue before trying to get one as most of the time it will be use at city riding, any help is appreciated.
Not my type of bike but it does sound fantastic, I’d have the SP.😉
Does anyone know if it has quick shift and auto blip?
If you sliced me open at the middle it would read YAMAHA. currently on my second KTM, gonna buy a Rocket 3 next but I still hanker for an R1
Great review chopsy,
The MT10 has what you ride bikes for,
do you find the bike a little small for a 6ft 2er ?
No seems good, plus its big so don't look silly on it
Good bike but that dash needs a serious over haul to bring it into 2023 (same with r1).
A face only a mother could love 😂
Sorry I was born with it 😄👍
Larger screen and a prettier font and a more sporty rear (just put the R1 rear on it Yamaha) and I would consider it. How it looks now, despite it being a really good bike, I wouldn't put it in my garage. I need a bike to look really good because that's also part of the owning a bike experience.
Sounds like a nice modification project! I've seen bikes with this done
The least attractive big naked, and I'm usually a Yamaha man. I'm sure the engine is as good as you say. Good riding position. Too much for me probably. I'll stick to my 390 Duke. Haha!
Great review. Your enthusiasm comes through. Nick J
Does make you wonder.. if this bike is fine with 162bhp or so, then why do we need M1000R’s and Streetfighter’s pushing out 200? It’s a lot of extra money for power you can’t realistically access or use (especially considering most of us don’t do track days).
Because there are still a lot of consumers out there that like to know they have that extra ceiling of power and can afford it.
I do agree, the way it makes it power you don't really need more
How is the gas consumption?
Not too bad! Didn't seem thirsty really
👍🏻When is the R1250RS / Mandello comparison happening please?
Different class bikes really but have seen comparison done already MotoGuzzi V100 Mandello won
@@jake88cilol, not by Chopsey.. he’s done only separate reviews, no comparison yet.
maybe the R, not the Rs? or you’re thinking Mandello has full fairings and it’s competing against the RS?
@@jake88ci Different class? The Mandello is billed as sports tourer as is R1250RS…
@@MarianChicu I disagree….the R has even less of a fairing, the RS is the comparable to the Mandello. In Chopsey’s RS video in Spain he said he’d do a Mandello / RS comparison video in any case…
Putting you on the spot Chopsie, this or M1000R? Both derived from fully faired sports bikes. 🙂
I’ll bet on the M 😁
Pretty sure John’s gonna pick that one as he does also track days.. and by the reviews the M is a bit better suited for track.
Hmm the M1000R is plain crazy and incredible.. Tough choice but currently just really enjoying the MT10, can't even put my finger on why I love it so much..
