    You need this blade: www.hisglassworks.com/shop/hus...
    and any 10" tile cutting saw.
    This video teaches you how to cut any type of bottle with a table saw. You can easily cut square bottles or specialty liquor bottles with this simple glass cutting method!

    Caitlin, Great video!When doing round bottles, You can also spin the bottle against the blade without going all the way through. This will create a score and prevent any cracking, chipping or fissuring near the end of the cutting process.

    As a woodworker who has glasses themselves, I love that you have a shield on the side of them for cutting materials. For those who dont have the sheilds available companies sell special safety glasses to go over normal glasses to offer an extra layer of protection. Stay safe! And thank you for posting this video!

    The video content doesn't cover the saw blade and the link is broken. For anyone trying to figure out the blade, she is using a Husqvarna Superlok Glass+ Fine Diamond Blade. The size of blade needs to match the saw. She has a big saw, so she is using a 10" blade.

    Hi Caitlyn!! I have been at this for a while now trying to find the best method for the smoothest cut edge to cut down my sanding time. I recently rented a tile saw from Home Depot, and I unfortunately did have some shatter. I used the blade that came with which was a diamond blade, however I am considering trying it again but purchasing the same blade you used. I couldn't really see the edges of your bottle clearly but was there much shatter or chipping?

    • @CaitlinOBigelow1
      @CaitlinOBigelow1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Angie, You could use any type of wet saw but you need to have a specialized blade that's made for this kind of thing. Without that blade you'll have shattering and chipping. A few of my bottles have very minor chipping but can usually be smoothed out with emory cloth or a dremmel tool. Good luck!!

    Hi Caitlin.
    I have a few questions for you. I have the same set up as you, saw and blade. My first question regards the blade. Once i start the cut the blade turns red like it's very hot. Is this normal? My second question is about the cut. I'm finding as I'm about to finish, the bottle will chip off at the end. Is there a trick to why this is happening? I haven't been able to cut a single bottle without it cracking. Hope you are able to send me some insight!
    Thanks, Taylor

    • @CaitlinOBigelow1
      @CaitlinOBigelow1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Taylor, make sure water is ALWAYS running on the blade. If water isnt constantly running the blade will become too hot. The final little bit is most prone to chip, because the glass is very weak. Thin bottles (like beer) are more prone to chipping, where I've found wine bottles to be much easier. Just go slow and steady and keep a firm grip at the end. Good luck! You can also visit my website www.DIYwithCaitlin.com Cheers - C.

      Caitlin,
      Thanks for the feed back. We have finally perfected cutting the bottles! Your website has been a great deal of help to us.
      We've got two more questions, if you are able to help us.
      1.) After we cut the bottles we want to use them for drinking glasses. Do you have any suggestions for sanding the edges down smoothly?
      2.) We're also cutting wine and other liquor bottles and want to preserve the labels. Any thoughts on how to achieve this? The water from the saw ruins them.
      Thanks again for all of your insight and help!

      @@CaitlinOBigelow1 Hi, After watching this video a few years ago realizing it's the best, i got a cheap wet tile saw from Harbor Freight & Tools and spent about $90 on a diamond blade. Tried a few beer bottles and the cuts went great right till the end, the last little bit was causing them to shatter via the vibrations. Learned about it after the fact from mikegigi.com "A tile saw many not work on thinner glass bottles if it is too coarse and sets up shattering vibrations."
      I see in the video you cut 3 bottles with eqipment that looks like it costs $1000, $333 per bottle. I'm out $200 and have zero cut bottles to show for it. Mike's webby is "Everything you ever wanted to know about glass bottles." He has a great example of how to build your own bottle neck twisting kiln like the ones the Carnies used in times gone buy. Anyway, the builds on the wooden crates are going great, no power sawing.

    • @paulomontufar6896
      @paulomontufar6896 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A blade thats made for cutting through glass will make a nice clean cut however, if youre using an older blade, run the tile saw blade through a pumice stone. This helps with keeping the blade sharp and it wont chip the bottle.. Also in the past I have put masking tape around the bottle where the cut is going to be made to avoid chipping the edges..

    • @CaitlinOBigelow1
      @CaitlinOBigelow1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt - most likely. As you get into some of the bigger handles there isn't always enough clearance to send the bottle all the way through. I've experimented with turning the bottle to get the full cut but it's harder to line it up perfectly.

    Gave this method a shot with a tabletop 7" tile cutter and a brand new 7" Husky tile blade and the results were not clean. Cut a small Jagermeister bottle and a few Sam Adams and a Woodchuck bottle's and all exhibited chipping all around the cut. Is it a requirement for a higher RPM cutter or larger blade to cut glass? The motor on my unit is 3/4 hp. I'm wondering if the chipping is a result of cutting very thin glass? Has anyone else experienced lots of chipping on their cuts using this method?

    do you do anything to sand the edges down?

    • @CaitlinOBigelow1
      @CaitlinOBigelow1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can use emery cloth to sand the edges which can be quite sharp!

      CaitlinOBigelow would you recommend a portable table saw? I saw 7" portable wet tile saws going for less than $100 but the model you own seems to be over $1k... a little out of my price range to work on some fun projects with bottles.

      Frederick Hall Jr. Hi Frederick, The nice thing about a 10" saw is that you can cut larger bottles. A 7" should be fine for wine and beer bottles though. The saw I'm using cost about $250 at Harbor Freight. You need to make sure you use a diamond blade though and those can be a little pricey (~$90-120).

      CaitlinOBigelow Thank you for the info! Just to let you know your replies did go to good use...I actually went out and bout the same 10" saw at Harbor Freight. I found the Husqvarna 10" Superlok Glass+ which is made to cut glass tile. That seems like the closest match. Thank you!

      Cut bottles can be recycled into all sorts of cool things like candles, sconces, vases, tumblers, and drinking glasses!

    Do you have any suggestions for smoothing the cut? I've been using a palm sander and not happy with the results.

      Hi Dean, try using your shop's DMT file, red, for fine grit.

      I watched your demo again of cutting a square bottle. I am so envious, it looked so easy! I'm using a 7" Kobalt tile saw and a lower end glass blade. I can see upgrading to a 10" saw would make cutting any size or shape easier. Thanks for your suggestion.

    A couple hundred bucks will get you a tile saw like this at Harbor Freight. BTW, see it in action in Taos, NM. TH-cam, "Garbage Warriors." They build Earthships. 7,000 cut bottles in one build!

    Hey Caitlin,
    This one is a great video as you've given all info. I've using the basic scoring method till now, & I think its time for an upgrade now. I'm thinking of replicating the same as yours. I wanted to check if yours is the same saw as the one in the link below. The cutting depth is about 3 1/2 inches in this one right? Is this sufficient for big bottles as well?

    I'd use mesh gloves and not turn it off the way you did-

    • @sandranallely6914
      @sandranallely6914 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      As an experienced user, I find no fault. I've done this plenty times (tile and glass) and I've never needed mesh gloves, they're completely unnecessary in my personal experience, but if it makes you feel safer, do it. Though I don't advocate you test it, tile cutting blades won't cut your fingers with light pressure, you'd need to really ram your fingers in there to cut them. I haven't had a bottle break, but they have chipped and that's really the only reason you'd want leather or rubber gloves. Also, the running water is cold, and after prolonged use your hands get really cold, so it's a doubly good idea to wear rubber gloves.

      +Sandra Nallely Glad to connect with a fellow bottle cutter! :) It's true, your hands do get cold! Do you cut bottle to sell or just for hobby...or something else entirely?

What is the name of this machine and where did it come from?". Kool. The machine is sold by Harbor Freight Tools in the USA. The name can be found at the end of the clip, Chicago something brand.
