Like always, great points mentioned, not to mention the video is well edited.
Really liked the that you mentioned family aspect, never really thought about that strand in the context of this film before, mind you its been around 20 years since I last saw it. The characterisation and the character arcs are certainly almost hidden beneath the generic attributes to which this film was primarily made for.
One point that really resonated with me is when you pointed out the differences between this film and Grindhouse (i.e. Planet Terror and Death Proof) I could not agree more with the point. In fact, this is what I personally think about the majority of Tarantino's work. IMO, the man has yet to top his debut feature.
Reservoir Dogs, despite its low budget, showed an economy towards pacing in the fact there isn't anyting wasted in the film and within the space of 90-100 minutes we have development that is presented within a brisk pace. Pulp Fiction, despite its length, also does this whilst still expanding its pulp sensibilities.
It is with Jackie Brown that Tarantino starts to change, almost for the better IMO. What starts out as a homage to feminist blaxploitation, transcends into a tale of two mature characters who have disappointing pasts trying to navigate through a world that has rapidly changed... and also make some money on top of it 😉
With Jackie Brown, Tarantino demostrated that he can write (or adapt) characters with a rich arc, he showed that he was more than a genre loving motormouth. However IMO this will all end come Kill Bill, where he almost retreats back into being the genre loving fan, even more so than before. Shame he will stay there till 2019's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (despite Inglorious B'sterds having great acting turns from Chistoph Waltz and Michael Fassbender) For the next 17 years, all I got from Tarantino's films were the fact that why wasn't I watching the original films he was apeing (I know they are different setting, but I'd rather watch Baby Cart in The Land of Demons than Vol.1 or 2)
In fact this video proved ever more how in the three decades since Dogs, QT has become an industry. From Dusk Till Dawn is a Robert Rodriguez film, and we are talking about QT, just because he is one of the main actors and he also produced it.

Nice breakdown of Tarantino and I have to say that I agree. Kill Bill and the films that followed were so dense in their homage that the stories and characters got lost in the surface. Inglorious Basterds renewer my interest in as it felt more stripped down and the writing was tighter. What stood out most when I rewatched FDTD was that once you know what to expect the characters stand out a lot more as you said, Harvey Keitel’s performance in particular is very poignant and a nice twist on his previous Tarantino characters. Thanks again for you great comment. 👍

Great film such an incredible melding of genre. Hilarious, violent and brilliant homage throughout. Again excellent analysis and lovely overview of the 90's indie boom.

Thanks Nick, it was a fun movie to revisit and made me realise the wide variety of movies from the 90s. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Thanks a lot. It’s a nice chance to rediscover some movies as you said. It had been a good while since I watched this one and it definitely took me back to a certain era of cinema going and filmmaking. 👍

My girlfriend and I left the theater after 15 minutes. Hated it and. still haven't finished watching it. LOL. Some people love it tho, and. that's all that matters

It always left an impression on me and I loved the melding of genres. In some ways it hasn’t aged well and chances are it would never be made now as it would probably be offensive in regards to its depictions of women etc. But it captures a time in the 90s where mainstream movies were becoming quite unique and idiosyncratic as they absorbed the voice of their creators who had come from indie film. A lot of directors now seem to lose their voice when they take on a studio assignment such as a marvel/Disney film, the result is usually quite generic and could have been directed by anyone.

@@MovieBirthdays Agree. Thats a topic I will talk about in my next video. I think most of the new young directors only care about money and fame. We seem to be in a creative wasteland atm.

@@classiccinema9490 I’m hoping that’s not the case. If I’m honest, I find it harder to discover new films or directors, things just seem to appear on streaming services without any attention or sense of event. It all feels very disposable, I’m always asking for recommendations for new films but very little gets suggested.

@@MovieBirthdays Maybe we will get another influx of talent like the early 70s, with Lucas, Spielberg, DePalma, Scorcese, etc. Problem is lack of free thinking to be creative, so hard to predict what will happen.

Like I said, the editing on this is great and love the subject of neo-New Hollywood. If you take suggestions, I hope this year you do The French Connection. Right up your alley.

It was fun looking back at the 90s indie auteurs, I eventually want to make a video about the whole era in detail. Also, good news, The French Connection is on the list and coming soon. 👍
