Beck uses the same f shape for his g chord just down one step. You can hear him sliding up and down on the recording. It a,so really helps you learn that thumb f chord .

Just came across this. Thanks for the lesson. Another thought for the thumb over top issue is to skip it all together, play the baby f7, and use the third fret f in its place- so you'd pluck the strings in this order: d, g, d, b, e, d, g

As for that thumb-blistering Fmaj7, if like me you don't have an ogre-size hand, keep the thumb on the low E, and don't finger the A string. 3rd finger on D string, 2nd on G, 1st on B as normal. Not fingering the A string makes it easier, sounds like the arpeggio doesn't use the A string anyway.

If you bar the chorus you can tune the high e down a 1/2 step and then you don’t have to use the thumb-F chord.
sure but then you have a wacky Eb note that will make your C chords a Cm
Ryan Lendt yeah, I see that now, I was just doing the verse like that but it doesn’t work in the chorus. If I tune up the low E it seems to work if I play the G chord differently and play a different bass note on the E chord. Just trying to figure out how to not use my thumb because it hurts my wrist

Beck plays this with a capo on the second fret live. Wonder if you can avoid the uncomfortable F7 that way? Dude has a monster thumb, though
without looking into it... he must be in a different key because F with capo 2 would be Eb - not convenient in any universe
@@RyanLendt I can tell you know a lot about theory so why I asked you on it. I can pull F7 off alright but it doesn’t mean I like it lol. One way to avoid the barre is pointer finger on low E, middle finger on B, ring on G, pinky on A. That’s how I get the clearest sound on it every time, but it’s an uncomfortable hand shape and if you’re playing fluid, you can’t realistically use your pointer finger for the C chord or the last chord that I don’t know if it’s a G without the G or what to call it? Lol

I don't play the F on the low E string because it wears me out with so many repetitions. I start plucking the Fmaj7 with the F at the 3rd fret of the D string and I think it sounds quite a bit better than playing a standard F chord. Everything else I believe I do the same as shown here.
