    The Porsche Cayman will surpass your ideas about value. That flat 6 Porsche engine, exhaust , tight gearbox and a mid engine known for it's excellent stability will be revered as an all time classic Porsche.

    154k on my 06 Cayman S now, IPD plenum, GT3 throttle body, Topspeed Pro1 headers, Topgear exhaust, STX coilovers, FVD tune, and a short shifter. I used to be the but it’s not a 911 guy when I had my E92 M3, got the chance to drive a cayman base with my buddy in my M3 behind me on some twisty roads and realized, oh it’s not a 911, and that’s the point. What really sold me on it was the fact that the M3 could not even remotely keep up in the corners. He’d almost catch me on the straight and then I’d lose him next corner (he’s a good driver). After that drive the M3 went up for sale and the Cayman S took its place. Owned it for 2 years and about 20k miles now and it’s a keeper.

    I love how much the SS 1LE is brought up in a lot of these comparisons. Just shows how great value that car is even compared to high end sports cars and not just some muscle car!

    I had a 2007 Cayman S. Fun car and I got it for $20,000 4 years ago before the prices went insane for everything, sold it 2 years ago for $30,000. Sold it because I wanted to upgrade to a 981 Boxster S-then since a 981 Spyder. If I were looking to get into a 987 Cayman again, I’d pay a bit more to get the 987.2. Better engine and zero IMS worries. Overall, though, the 981 platform is a superior product.

    The internet (by which I mean YOU and ZYGRENE) keeps showing me 987 Caymans, S2000s, and FC RX7s. I can afford one of them, but only if I stell my NC Miata which I love so dearly. It's excruciating because I want them all!

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Can't go wrong with any of those, including your NC! Light weight, NA RWD manual cars won't be around much longer.

      As a guy who just went from a 987.1 Cayman S (w/Sport Chrono) down to an ND1 Miata (Club w/BBSnBrembos).. They're both rewarding, but the Miata allows me to do more not only to the Miata, but just in other aspects of life in general, lol. Modding a Cayman S is NOT cheap (Soul CBE is $2500.. You can do a LOT with that on a Miata, lol). But, mechanically, flawless. I had a great example though.. Was previously owned by a PCA Regional VP and no tell-tale signs of IMS or bore scoring problems (90k miles).. Sold it to a good friend of mine, so it's 'staying in the family'.. may buy her back later.. But currently loving the ND1 (has more low end torque than the ND2, which I prefer.. cheaper too lol).

    Really love the Cayman, hard to decide for me between this and a C5 vette.

    • @nfancioni
      @nfancioni 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      C5 Vette for cheaper parts/maintenance, sound, and better straight line performance, Porsche for light weight, corner beast, quality, and the amazing driving experience.

    • @the850project4
      @the850project4 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      C5s feel decent, coming from a Miata it definitely feels very large compared and like it's more loose. I wonder what the C5 would feel like with mods to compare.

    • @hMint
      @hMint 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nfancioni a very close friend of mine once owned a 987.2 cayman S, he said no car he’d owned comes close to how it handled with it being mid engine. I didn’t know him back when he owned it tho so I couldn’t get a ride in it 😅. Now I just gotta find a friend who owns a C5 to fill in the blanks.
      But you’re right, I love how the C5 is cheaper to maintain and I’m a huge sucker for V8s. At the same time the handling of the Cayman really gets to me and plus the flat 6 behind me might just make a sound comparable to a V8

    • @Matt77346
      @Matt77346 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I've owned both those cars, a 2003 C5 Z06 and a 2012 987.2 Cayman S. No comparison, I'm taking the Cayman every time. The 987 easily trumps the C5 in steering feel, seats, suspension, shifter feel, mid engine balance/handling, build quality, and sense of speed. I was actually disappointed in the C5 but I came from a 997.1 S, so maybe the bar was a bit high.

    • @the850project4
      @the850project4 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Matt77346 good comparison! I've been considering a C6Z but seeing this made me jump down a 24hr research rabbit hole. I'd love to buy a GT4 but that's a solid 5-10 years off for me so a 987.2S could be a good stepping stone car.

    Hey, I've never driven a manual, but have been watching manual driving tutorials. I was just wondering if it is a bad thing to downshift to first, and if so, why was it ok to do so in this car?

    • @Robert-un3cf
      @Robert-un3cf 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can sometimes do it as long as you're at low speed, but depends on the car. Can't do it in a car with a short first gear

      Hey! This is my car. That's a Porsche PCCM+ unit. It is OEM from Porsche and sold as an upgrade to modernize the 987/997 interior. You can order it from any Porsche dealership or from Suncoast. I got the first unit in CA (and likely the entire USA) back in Jan 2023 from Porsche San Diego.

    Those gears are taller than Shaq O'neal

  • @mrporsche4236
    @mrporsche4236 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The biggest problem with 99% of porsches including this is the gearbox. The gears are just way too tall. Porsche do not listen to its customers. A close ratio gearbox is night and day difference and make it enjoyable on the street.

    • @Matt77346
      @Matt77346 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I've had a LOT of cars and the Cayman gearing is a bit long, but it is FAR from being an actual "problem". Really, its just something to nit pick on a car that is almost technically perfect. Same with the steering rack. The slightly slower ratio increases resolution and gives you better precision. This is going to be more helpful for the majority of non-competitive and novice drivers vs. using a super quick rack which can easily cause over corrections. Porsche knows exactly what they are doing.
