    Coming from a GS after 60 000 km of touring on all types of terrain, I find the T7 the best bike ever built. Its beauty is in its simplicity. You can tour on it, but you can also ride off-ride like a beast. No fear, 100% confidence. And that is all because of the bike, not my experience. I sorted the fuel challenge by fixing a 2l fuel canister on either side of the engine protection bars, inside a durable offroad crash bar bag. Now I ride with enough surety that I will not run out of fuel. The weight is nice and low so that it does not interfere with the dynamics and balance. BEST BIKE EVER BUILT!

      It is a well built bike with proven reliability. Smart move with the extra fuel down low. That will help the balance of the bike. I miss some of the creatures comforts from the GS though. Maybe it will grow on me.

    You will always learn a lot on a long trip. About yourself, the bike, and your gear. I have over 50k on my T7 and have no desire for another bike, it just works. There are improvements that can be made (especially suspension) but not many are truly needed.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agreed, but for the long road miles I find this bike to be a chore to ride. If I stayed offroad all the time this would be the perfect bike. It's nit picky but the return spring on the throttle seems heavy to me. Hour after hour on the road and my shoulder, wrist and elbow start getting fatigued, even with a throttle lock. You have certainly proven it is a capable long distance bike, just not sure it is for me. I sorted the suspension and it made a huge difference. Cheers.

    Try putting a larger sprocket up front. One more tooth did it for me. It drops the rpm’s 4 to 500 on the Hwy for a little better mileage and still has great power for anything off-road. Stock chain works fine with the change.

    Really glad you’re enjoying that bike. I remember commenting on your video where you said you were a little nonplussed by the whole thing. I had a feeling the more time you spend on it the more you would enjoy it. I have 25,000 on mine, and have done mostly off-road on it. I did beef up my suspension and put quite a few other of the standard upgrades to make it how I wanted but I think the bike is one of the best all around you could ever purchase and it’s also extremely reliable, which is a huge plus. Well done bro. Nice video.

      Thanks. In the video I dropped a hint that another bike has caught my eye. The T7 reliability is hard to beat, but with more long distance in a short period trips I really miss cruise control and tubeless tires. For now, I am going to wringe out the CP2.

    I have the white red T7 and put the Clear Acerbic Tank on, it's lighter than stock so the extra fuel sort of balances out a fair bit. When I filled it first time I marked it in 2Litre increments, Can get about 24 litres in it, and do 500km in a pinch. No fuel anxiety now as you can see exactly what range you have left, about 40 safe km per mark. Love the bike, only top heavy when rolling around garage and stopped in bad terrain. As you know once your rolling that all goes away and feels more stable and confidence inspiring than my old wr250r.

    • @advmatt

      @@advmattIf you do, I also bought the locking acerbic fuel cap, mainly because it has no breather hose, so your tank bag can sit on it. Bloody expensive upgrade here is AUS. $700 for the tank, $70 for the cap. Worth it so far, no mucking around with bladders, and if you're not going too far dont fill it up. 😁

    Thanks for the video! I know it's old and you already updated your springs. However, for those that do not want to update your springs, you can adjust the suspension. For me, I'm 190lbs, I did top forks 14 clicks left, bottom forks 8 clicks left, rear shock bottom 10 clicks left, rear shock top 11 clicks left. Start by click all the way to the right, go slow and do not click passed the last click. Stock setting are in the owners manual if you want to reset. It made a world of difference for me. Did the Switzerland trail in CO both stock (bailed cause suspension too soft) and with the above adjustments. Owned the trail with np with the adjustments.

    Brake did a great bit on suspension options for the T7 (Expensive vs Mid-Range vs Cheap Suspension Mods | The T7 Project EP #003). While you are in there you might consider both the spring and piston update from K-Tech (one of the three options mentioned in that bit). The range is actually pretty good, but the giant reserve so many of these bikes run ends up giving you range anxiety.

    Good review or the bike, I had a 2021 that I rode across the USA twice last year, and the back roads of AZ. I sold it for a Vstrom but I regretted it and just picked up a 2022 same as yours with the Yamaha racks and boxes. Fuel range was my biggest issue, and plan to put an Acerbis 6 gallon tank in natural color on the bike, I like the blue tank but hate the limited range more. Tubeless was next so I will go the Barttubeless on the rear and leave the easier to change tube tire on front. My Vstrom1050 has cruise, but I rarely use it, a throttle lock works fine for me. Cruise is Meh, to me, I'm not a cruise control dependent rider. A 16 tooth countershaft sprocket will get you better mileage on the highway by bringing down the RPM and does not hut the low-end performance that much. I will be riding my new T-ray across the USA again this year and love the comfort and lay out. Never had a linkage issue, a lot of MX bike I have owned have the linkage as the lowest point, it gets hit now and then but never an issue. Thanks for the report.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You have put a lot a miles on your T7s. That's impressive. For me it was the 450+ mile days I was riding on this bike that wore me out on it. I get one week a month to go wherever I can. I choose to get out of the cold which meant a few really long days. It was exhausting and my right arm and shoulder felt tensed up all day. I admire riders like yourself that ride huge miles on this bike. I was thinking of dropping the rear sprocket a couple of teeth instead of the front, if I can find one. After more offroad riding the stock gearing seems off to me, first seems to short and second seems to tall. On rocky roads that I wanted to roll slowly through first had too much bite and I had to use the clutch a lot in second, so hopefully a gear adjustment will help. Enjoy the new bike. The CP2 engine is amazing. Cheers.

      Twice as much and nearly twice as often as many other bikes in the class. I miss the days of $350 valve checks (and that was not that long ago). A few other gripes like fork shims smashed to bits after 600 miles of easy to moderate ADV riding, the shifter side pivot bolt snapping readily, and some reports of scorched cams (it will be interesting to see what mine look like this year). If I do that I might as well add the McCruise while I am at it. I have another week long trip next week to Big Bend NP so I will get some more saddle time to learn the bike. I really like the CP2 engine. Its a ripper. Cheers.

    Interesting how each of our perceptions are different. I owned a T7 for about 5000 miles and thought it was the worst bike I have ever owned in the wind. I mean from a cross wind perspective. I would get a sudden gust of wind that would blow me so hard it felt dangerous. I have had 8 other ADV bikes, and even my light WR250R and CRF300L Rally do not catch wind like this bike. I was also fine with the suspension and fuel range. To each his own experience . . . . Cheers for your thoughts,

      The impression of a bike is very subjective. Coming off of a KTM 390 Adventure the road manners on this bike are much better, nothing like the R1200GS I owned but better. I am not in love with this bike, it has some warts for sure. I might hit the 5000 mile plateau as well.

    a missing cruise control is just a bit of inconvenience but not a bad thing, drive by wire has absolute not the same feedback like cable operated throttle. You are the first person who is complaining about the locked linkage, but I guess thats your bash plate you fitted. Have fun with the T7

    • @advmatt

      I am surprised no one has busted a linkage with a rock flipping up or smashing into a log crossing. I don't ride crazy stuff and get rocks flipped up and caught underneath the bash plate frequent enough it's a concern. Throttle by wire does feel different than cable. The T7 throttle return spring is heavy and after eight to 10 hours in the saddle my right arm is killing me. I have to rethink how I travel on this bike. I don't think I am capable of riding big miles day after day on this bike like have done on others to get to cool back country locations.

    Purchased a new 24 T7 a couple weeks ago. So far, here my good, bad, and ugly... Bad would be the stock tires. I dont have a lot of confidence in the front bite on loose gravel with the scorpions. Also wish it had the 6.2 fuel tank from the factory. My bike is black, i am on the fence about purchasing the larger tank. I also wish the gas cap was attached. I dont like that it comes all the way off the tank. The only ugly so far is the ABS. I wish you could turn it off and leave it off. The fact that it all turns back on every time you re-start the bike is dangerous. I believe if someone was not thinking about it, they could get in real trouble off-road. Other then that I really like everything about it so far. Question, what bags did you go with and why? I am looking at the Tusk Highland X2's or the Giant Loop Coyote. Interested in your thoughts.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Scorpion tires are awful anytime you get off of pavement. On pavement they are great, but not off. I have left the ABS on a few times and I have not had a run away situation, yet, like I experienced on my F800GS, but I do understand where you are coming from. As for bags, I built my own DIY setup. I will leave a link for the video. I really liked how they worked on this trip. I only paid about $225 for the entire setup so I can't expect a whole lot out of it. One of the saddlebags starting coming apart at the seam and Rhinowalk will not respond to me for warranty. Overall, I am really pleased with how my DIY setup worked. Good video.. don't know about many of the issues.. under sprung is week one, week two but certainly never ignored before going loaded on any trip!! And it should be but yet another message that manufacturers are not listening to.. American riders are 180-220lbs and some gear and stock suspension on most bikes is for a 160 pound person..all of the bikes are dishonest and set up for 90-10 and the 10% off road is dirt roads and nothing technical.. the fuel range is an issue on this bike and others.. and Yamaha is the only answer, they only made 4 colors and a metal tank w a gallon+ more at $450-600 bucks wouldn't make sense . the tanks that are backwards engineered usually are decent but Yamaha could make something much easier and better than anyone else. Cruise control issue is solved on latest model I think.. but bikes simplicity was part of it's appeal.. bigger windshield, heated grips, cruise control, better LCD, lowering linkage, and additional fuel capacity keep pushing the price and horsepower needs and they are already building the 900cc triple that was super good seller on the road.. have a feeling that the 900 is going to be popular also.. the T7 sort of made Yamaha stop at the lower bores and they still should make a WR450 or 500..in my opinion.. but the entire sector is becoming saturated!!! CFMoto,Kove and some others all 800-400cc

    The engine on the T7 is exceptionally robust and will accommodate everyone’s riding style, but common sense dictates with the business of fuel economy, riding high up the rev range is unnecessary if you want to cover distance, unless of course the desire is to mimic the Dakar, which of course is pointless. All the reports of the original T7 point out the soft suspension, if intending to travel fully loaded and you know beforehand the suspension isn’t geared for that, isn’t that a fault of the owner rather than the bike.
    Rear linkage …. These bikes have been abused by their owners off-road in all conditions, including rocky terrain yet this happens to be the only video commenting negatively. Is this a case of creating a crisis out of a simple one off drama or simply making a video for the sake of maintaining the income stream.
    Nothing new, exciting or interesting came out of this 11.35 minute video that hasn’t been covered literally hundreds of times already. If you intend to cover major distances, solo, fully laden you must expect to modify the bike, especially one that is built for simplicity, at a price leaving scope for the rider to adapt the machine to suit the job expected of it. The business of cruise control is a personal preference not a fault or “bad” element of the bike.
