      Godfrey Jemand mate you remind me of one of my homies, loves to spread vile over people, places, and things that have not raised a finger to hurt him? Don’t take yourself too seriously mate, it will give you anxiety, not to mention it will raise your assholeness levels.. what helps my homie that I’ll suggest to you is when you feel like this, buy a pizza, pepsi, and watch some anime or whatever floats your boat (I think he has an affiliate link, if he does I’ll post later) and above all after his new-found wisdom he shared a mantra with me “life is tough but it’s tougher if you’re stupid” cheers mate.

    15:28 Pure magic. You walked, you saw, you snapped, and you even shot it backhanded. The resultant shot, that serendipitous composition, that tiny moment stopped in time is just absolute magic. I love how much fun you make it look. This style of blissfully haphazard shooting is the reason I've been shooting with the GR for years over any other camera out there.

  • @mrbrakelol
    @mrbrakelol 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Great video, I appreciate the effort you put into it. I really hope they fix the issue you mentioned about the "lag" with auto ISO exposure, that's a deal breaker for me. I love on camera flash but could probably live without it... but not that auto ISO lag.
    Also, something that isn't a secret for anyone but I just LOVE the Ricoh colours! So good, especially positive film simulation... funny how it's so much better than Fuji colours that people rant and rave about.
    I'm assuming the lower battery performance is due to the image stabilization? Can you turn it off to conserve battery?

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think they can fix the Auto ISO snap focus issue with Firmware. I'm pressing Ricoh to consider fixing that. Yeah, the colors are super nice on the GR III! After being used to see the fuji film simulation for a long time, the GR III colors look refreshingly natural and more pleasing in my eyes. Unfortunately turning off the image stabilazation does not help the battery life (in theory), because the sensor still needs to be held in place. I will test it some day to be sure it really doesn't affect battery life.

      @@davidrothwell7906 I know how to shoot manual, but aperture priority with auto iso is basically necessary for 95% of the way I shoot. I have manual film cameras but some cameras and situations require FAST "point and shoot" functionality, especially in street where things can be seen and missed in a split second with varying exposures.

    Danke sehr aufmerksam for the thorough review. I like that you were many photographers testing out the same camera and you chose the perfect situation to push the camera to the max and also test yourselves in adopting to the new camera. That's a lot of collective knowledge and I'm more confident transitioning from the RGRII to the III after watching this. I'm a bit bummed out about the weather sealing and also the inbuilt flash but the alternative one you have is way more useful. The battery time does have me worried but since you were doing lots of test shots, going in and out of the menus etc then it must have drained much quicker. If it's on a normal day then the battery should last until evening or at least that's what I hope🤞🏿🙏🏿

    Hello Samuel. Do you always shoot at 1600 ISO? I found your 100% zooms in quite soft. I had the same concern when I shot with a Fuji X100F. Hi Samuel, thank you for your impressions. I have some questions for you if you could please answer at your leisure.
    #1 Can the main function button on the back be set for scrolling Snap distances just as holding the Macro button down. I’d prefer to isolate the button versus mistakenly engaging Macro by mistake which I’m sure we’ve all done many times. If as I stated is possible do the distance markings show without interference of a pop up screen as annoyingly the GRD IV does? I always felt Snap implementation was the best on the GRD III.
    #2 Are all 4 buttons within the wheel programmable? Also the WiFI button on the left?
    #3 Do we still have the option of working silent and are we still able to work with the screen blacked out via the display button?
    #4 I usually shoot in Manual but if using another setting and Exposure is Locked as well as a fixed/set ISO - will Snap still jump as you stated in your video?
    Yes colors are looking better. I always had unpleasant surprises with purple,pink,orange,magenta & Especially Reds.
    Thank you again for any help with my questions. T.C.
    #

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      #1 Unfortunately that is not possible. You can however use the Fn button to change snap focus distance without using the macro button and the dial. But that's not what you mean I assume.
      #2 Only the left and right button.
      #3 Yes!
      4# Yes, Snap focus will still jump to the prefocused distance.
      You're welcome! :)

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      the auto ISO snap focus issue only happens like 2-3 times of 10 shots. It still sucks when you miss a shot because of that but I think it's not hard to adjust and keep the camera up before shooting. Also I am positive (or just hopeful) that they will fix that with a firmware update.

    The lack of a viewfinder is dealbreaker for many photographers. They often prefer to see "through the lens" rather than to view the image on a flat screen. And the external Ricoh viewfinder doesn't seem to be a good substitute.

  • @Maikacir
    @Maikacir 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great first impression Samuel!
    As a non-street photographer, I would love if you could maybe test it in other settings? Especially how the lens functions when shooting portraits (I don't care about studio-lighting etc, I'm more intersted in seeing how much peoples faces get distorted from the 28mm focal length).
    I'm looking to buy an everyday-carry camera, so I'm debating either getting the GR ii, the fuji 27mm pancake-lens for my x-t10, or a compact 1" sensor camera like the Panasonic Lumix LX15. I'm looking most fondly at the Ricoh, but I don't know if I can work with the focal length - I'm unsure if it produces too distorted images for my liking.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can definitely do that in my full review. 28mm is a nice focal length for environmental portraits. For headshots the distortion will be unflattering mostly. But for upper body portraits it can work well. You could practise by using your phone for example (they mostly have a focal length of 28mm).

      I agree that it's 899€ is alot. But a x-t30 and a 23mm f2, fantastic combo, its about double in size. They just don't compaire. I'll wait a while, until there are more real life experience video's. For now i stll use my nikon apsc coolpix A.

    I love my GR, it’s battered, and has been used to almost death, but it’s the best camera I’ve ever owned, it’s far more than just a street photography camera, I’ve used it in all environments, landscapes, long exposure, multiple exposures, underwater ( in a waterproof case) My only gripe, was that the macro wasn’t very macro! now they’ve improved this, and added a touchscreen, and made the camera faster, and smaller! I will definitely purchase this at some point, probably when it drops in price a little. But I have no reservations about the GR or it’s system, it’s the best I’ve experienced, and the less you have to think, the more you can just focus on getting the shot

      True! My old GR was also not only a street cam. It was basically documenting everything in my life.

    Nice! I've been looking forward to this video. There are two things I'm wondering about: 1. The new lens: how does it compare to the extraordinary previous version in the GR i & ii? 2. You talked about snap focus not working in certain situations because of auto ISO. Was that not a problem on the GRii? Does it have something to do with the lack of TAv mode? Thanks!

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will do some side by side comparison with the older GR's in a future video. Then I can tell how the new lens compares to the old one. It does already feel very sharp and comparable to the GR II. Snap focus wasn't working because of the camera needing to expose the scene first. It did not always happen but maybe 2-3 times of 10 shots. The GRII would just take the shot even though the exposure might not be right yet. I think we will see ricoh fixing that with a firmware update. TAv mode is not necessary anymore because you can now use AUTO ISO in any mode.

    The RAW pictures look noticeably better than the JPEGs; colours looked more natural in RAW compared to the overly pale profile of the JPEGs. I’m a purist when it comes to post-processing (i.e. I absolutely abhor ANY post-processing) so images that are excellent straight out of the camera are what I treasure. Thanks for your video.

    Thanks for the review, best on TH-cam so far. There are still a few things that are not clear to me though: 1. How is the video quality vs the GR II? Can you share what the bitrate is? 2. How is the autofocus speed now? although they have the Hybrid system, it seems that it still hunts? Does it do better in low light than before? 3. How is the Face detect AF? The old one could detect faces, but it missed actually focusing on them most of the time. Does it do better now? 4. How is the C-AF in video? Is it usable? Thanks again.

    Fantastic review. I had the Gr1v and then first (slow GRD) and now the Fuji X100F. I really miss the high contrast sharp BW shots. How does the new ricoh compare to the fuji x100f? AF wise?

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      X100F beats the GR III when it comes to AF. The GR III has problems finding focus in dark areas. The Fuji locks focus confidently even in really low light situations. In bright sunlight, both cameras are almost equally fast.

    Took delivery and am getting used to cam. Touch screen does enable touch to 1. Af select; 2. Af select and focus; and, 3. Af select plus focus plus shoot. Shoot alone not an option, but don’t see why you would want that setting. Cam does get warm.

    • @SamuelStreetlife

      Touch to shoot would be the fastest way to shoot with the touch screen. I don't need the autofocus if I can pre-focus.

    I'm still not really excited yet. I paid 300€ for my mint condition Ricoh GR and it's not that far away from the GR III. The AF doesn't seem to be much improved, though C-AF seems to be much better. The IQ is almost on par from what I have seen so far. Only improvement is the increased cropping potential. Maybe high ISO performance is improved too.
    Touchscreen is nice, especially because of its responsiveness. But they could have implemented it in a more innovative way, like Touch-to-shoot-w/o AF or Touch-to-Snap or anything else that would have been useful for the streets.
    Overall the GR III is now a more versatile camera, but doesn't bring any advantages for street photography over the GR II.
    ... by the way, really nice hands-on review.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For the touch screen I see potential in adding some features via firmware updates but for the rest I am with you. The GR version I is a steal for 300€!

      This review didn't touch on or demonstrate any lowlight focusing which would be the largest area of improvement with the phase-detection addition. Great review but I do wish we'd seen a bit of use in more dim, indoor areas.

    Hi, Sam. Do you know if the Ricoh DB-110 battery is indeed the same as the Olympus LI-90B/LI-92B? If so, this would save lots of people's money since the GR3 consumes power quite quickly. I checked eBay for third-party LI-90B compatible batteries and they are very cheap. A charger with TWO batteries typically sells for about $18 (USD). Please discuss this in your upcoming Q&A Live on 3/31/2019 @ 11AM EST. Thank you.

    Great vid Samuel! hopefully you can keep the pace of releasing new stuff hehe.
    I already pre-ordered this camera, it's my first GR and it's going to be my only camera for a long while as street photography is my passion. According to your review, the only aspect that left me a bit hesitant is the exposure "bug". Is this the kind of thing that can be solved with new firmware?
    Keep up the good work ;)

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! The exposure bug only occurs during snap focus mode and with auto exposure. It happens maybe 2-3 times of 10 shots. And the scene you are photographing has to have a very different exposure to whatever the camera was pointing at before. So when you know this it is not a big issue. BUT, a missed shot is a missed shot... So, I hope they can fix that with a firmware update and I already told Ricoh about it so I hope they will work on it soon!
