The Amazon listing shows a picture of pressing down on the collar of the spikey things, creating an area to trap the edge of the board in.
Must be a bit misleading then. The spikey things are a solid lump of metal with a magnet on the bottom and a brass spike on the top. No moving parts that I can see. That would be quite cool thought.

Nice. I run a pcbite setup here and those magnetic arms would be a really nice addition to it.
Ah looks like they tried emulating the pcbite stuff with the spikey magnet things. Yeah nah the clampy pcbites are much better on that front.
Really love the clamp arm though, that would be perfect for holding a USB microscope for inspecting a board.
I had never heard of pcbite until you mentioned it. Very interesting! Yeah those pcb holders on your version look much better.
The arm is brilliant. Although I've replaced it with the Smallrig version which is just fantastic.
And I've already got a quick release plate attached to my microscope and it works so well. I'm really pleased with it.
If the plate is just metal, you could run your hot air gun for a while, heat it up to soldering temperatures, then place your board on which has has solder paste and components applied, then it would heat up the board from underneath while a small amount of heat is applied from the top, and this would reduce the heat stress on your components.
Sort of like a passive hotplate.
I'm sure that would work. I'm also sure I would burn myself on that 😆
Not sure how the rubber feet would cope with 300+ degrees...
Oh I am going to have to get this. I have one similar to the first one but it has a metal base. Like you said, you can't line anything up with them.
I've used it multiple times already. Have it hanging on a nail on the leg of the workbench.
The best thing so far is I've converted my microscope to one of those quick release plates. Now I can store that away from the bench but still have it up and running at a moments notice on the posable arm.

Nice, could do what a good set of helping hands, I just that cheap crappy one with a magnifying glass on it.
But that one with the metal arms you have is really good for the small stuff. I keep hoping I'll see one at car boot.
Maplin Special¿
The first one? I think that was from amazon. Last tool I bought from maplin was a terrible soldering iron.
Oops this was meant to be in reply to the person that said they had a cheap crappy one with a magnifying glass. Sounded like my one which was a Maplin special, the croc clips are on a short bar and only rotate up and down, and are super sharp and bitey - no rubber or silicone. The magnifier is pretty good though.

Probably a bit overpriced. But I'm still really impressed with how well it works.
I got a similar kit recently, to replace a helping hands setup with those same crappy blue arms. Yours has more of those little pointed things, but mine has a small PCB vice and a magnifier with an LED ring that's powered via USB
