More Fun Making It 2

Second channel to the @morefunmakingit main channel.
Here you will find all the stuff I'm too embarrassed to share on channel 1.
DO NOT expect fancy editing or complicated plotlines. I will do the bare minimum on this channel as the main channel is where all my efforts are sucked away. Ew.

I have a bunch of computers to repair. Before I can get started its a good idea to go through and triage them to give a broad picture of how much work each one needs. In this episode there are 4x 48k ZX Spectrums with various faults. There will be a series of episodes covering all the machines in the pile. Replacement Hakko FR301 Arrives in the Workshop. But Does it Work?
Rees have me one of his Famicoms. I hope he was more gentle with you.
Loving the shelves in the background!
Im really please with how theyve turned out. At the moment just a load of random machines up there. Will sort something better to look at out soon
I bought one of Rees' Famicoms. I promise I wasn't the bad experience!
I bet you were a nightmare! :D
Yeeeeeet
So satisfying :D
Tengo el mismo modelo, le falta el soporte teclado y tiene oantalla negra🤔😥
Cant help you with the black screen but the keyboard supports are available on Thingiverse to 3d print
Maybe you've come across this tip before.. Submerging in IPA and letting the board drip dry is a great way to help dry things out after submerging boards in water, brilliant to stop water getting trapped in places where they may not dry out as quickly as you would like them to (chip sockets etc). Obviously there's a fire risk of a big bloody tub of IPA in the house along with the fumes, on top of this it can be difficult to see the flame when it's burning so maybe best to do outside 😁😁 Loving the series, keep 'em coming!
I didnt mention it in the video, but before I blasted it with compressed air I hosed it down with IPA :D
Never seen a shortboard C64.
Hi, Lee. Got a suggestion for the first machine. It looks like bit errors in the color RAM. You lucked out here. In later models, the color RAM was integrated into the super PLA. On that 250469 you've got, it's still a discrete 2114 at U19. I'd try replacing that. Good luck with the rest of the pile!
Diagnostics shows Color RAM OK. Isn't this VIC-2?
@@watchmakerful It could be, but I don't think the color RAM tests are any more reliable than the system RAM tests, especially when detecting subtle bit errors. The color RAM is easier to replace and, obviously, far less expensive than a VIC-II, so I'd go there first.
Cheers Todd. The two that I have not fixed will be going back on the bench at the end of the series. I might just add those on in this channel or if they are interesting make a main channel video. Making notes!
Pleasure meeting you too (and Rees) :)
as soon as you said all the main chips are socketed. my brain said: it'll be the memory then
It looked like at the very end you tried the board without the test cart, but with no ROMs or CIAs. No wonder about the black screen. But of course that thing has probably more issues anyway, and it wouldn't have made a difference... (Or maybe the cart was inserted off camera?) Not like I haven't made this very mistake a few times already, hence why I noticed it. :)
Wow! Your repairs are so fast I had to watch your video twice!! :) Thanks for sharing
Have you tried Birt's case repair kits? (Hey Birt/Soigeneris) just 3D printed "bits" but they cover all of the common problems like case clips (all case variants), and screw posts
I suspect the VIC Chip
Always wondered about rubbers - do we call them rubbers because you rub the paper (or, in this case, edge connector fingers) with them, or because they're purportedly made out of rubber? 🤔
It's odd that in the US, it means something soooooo very different....
So, here are my thoughts on machine #4: First, when you did the final test after returning the CPU to the board, you didn't appear to have the dead test cartridge installed. Without that and without the CIAs or ROMs, black screen was no surprise. The next thing I'd suggest checking is if your GAL PLA is working. I've had more than one of those where one of the GALs programs fine, but then craps out when installed in a C64. This can happen immediately or only after the GAL PLA has been sitting around unused for a while. Just as a sanity check, pop it into your working 64 to make sure it's still good. If that's not it, I'd try swapping out the VIC-II. I've run into one machine where the clock was good and I was getting a black screen with the white line, which makes you think the VIC-II is working, just like you are, but the addressing was being screwed up by the VIC-II and since you did see some questionable signals on at least one of the multiplexers, I'd say that's a possibility. Again, just as a sanity check, I'd go ahead and test the 7805 and 7812 regulator outputs, just to be safe.
More of a sepectrum guy here but could it be a bad Vic????
I concur
I've been away & have only just caught up with this. Feeling a little spoiled now 😀 Thank you Lee
Internally shouting "it's still switched on!!!"! 😅 What are you using to capture the C64 video output?
Dont Panic! I will send you a link to the device on Discord.
@@morefunmakingit2Shades of Hitchikers!
Well its another one saved, shame it took so many chips to bring it back tho
Nice to see you fixing some C64's again. I enjoy these repairs the most, what with the C64 being my main computer back in the 80's 👍
Got some interesting ones coming up!
What complete idiot would send you working machines 😂😂
Welcome back to the daily grind Mr Benchley. ;)
Cheers!
Has there ever been any MSX computers on your bench, Lee?
I have a Toshiba. But sadly it is in fully working condition!
Lee... you are a fix-o-matric repair-monster. You had me going "Woah! a +3, wooah! a +2a, woooaah! a Toastrack, etc., etc." craving every single one of those, even though I've already got some of them. But what's even more childish than that, is that the ones I do have are just sitting on a shelf collecting dust. Because the machine I go to for quenching my Speccy-nostalgia thirst is obviously the ZX Next. Well, simply because it's easier to hook up and much more convenient to use. But more importantly since I had to get myself one and also "did the time" waiting for it, then I'd bloody hell better also use it, am I right? - So, what's with still craving a +3? - yeah, it's got a really cool yet rather silly ol' 3" disc drive (by todays standards). And if I got one, I'd properly swap the drive for a Gotek, before more or less permanently also assigning the poor old thing to dust collection duty... Humans!?! - we're just such weird animals.
I cant argue with a single word! :D
Hooray! It's Lee and a pile of broken computers!!
My thoughts exactly, been missing these.
Good to have some "Normality" Lee, looking forward to your next streams, keep up the excellent work. 😃👍
Much appreciated
Get a warm vectrex like buzz inside seeing some MFMI fixing 👍👍👍

Old School would be the pinball machine Lee built way back when - "More Fun MAKING it", rather than "More Fun FIXING It"...
Very much want to do something like that next year!
Glad to hear you're well :) Amazing work! I'll watch out for the Game Gear 😁
I will make sure I give you an early look at it :D
Its an incredibly job you've done pulling all this together. Never has the retro community been so enthusiastic to help buy and house donkeys.
Ah Lee love you videos sorry haven’t replied recently. Lost my job in January. Got a new one in April but taken some time to bounce back and be able to catch up. Your content is amazing.
Hey Curtis! Sorry to hear the road has been a bit bumpy. Hope all is well now. Good to hear from you!
Congrats on the incredible result, Lee. Looking forward to seeing that CPC restoration.
Coming soon!
It was an amazing effort from you Lee. You are a super star for doing it

I have both and the Hakko is the far superior de solder gun I am a believer in you get what you pay for the Hakko is expensive but works really well
Lee, you look done. Definitey should take a hiatus next year and clear your decks, both physically and metaphorically.
The ebay posting/packing is always the least fun part. Hopefully you can push on through that, and get your gaming without guilt reward (is that even possible as an adult?!). Satisfactory does look good/addictive. #playmorein24

As I have just discovered, this is what usually leads to a Sinclair Interface 1 (and Microdrives) not being recognised by a Spectrum. Changed the Z80 and bingo! 👍🏽
