This is a great reference video, Joe! Outstanding. I will be referring to it a lot for the next few days. I was checking out a Carr Bel-Ray yesterday and I couldn't quite put a finger on what made that amp sound a certain way. It was the Fane 25 that was taking the mid range down a little lower than I'm used to from a Celestion Greenback, that classic British sound. The Bel-Ray had this unique, as you said, open sound, and a growl from the low wattage. The notes were clearer. This video has shown me the direct shift with the back to back comparisons! Thanks! All the speakers sound great. The Fane does have its own character. I would like to put one in a 1x12 cab and use it alone when I want that sound. You're right about the Gold and the F30 - they sound almost the same.
I bought an A30 on Joe's recommendation for a AC15 style combo amp, and it is MEGA. One of the best sounding speakers I've heard. It smoothed out any ice pick highs, while keeping that wonderful chime. I'd buy this speaker again and again. There's a distributor in the USA who you can find on Reverb.
To my ears The A30 sounded crisper and more defined with a bit more top end than the Alnico Gold. The Fane is the easy winner to me although their combined output was very surprising. I'm not sure how you would rate something like that. The F30 to G12H was much the same but the always expected Celestion mid bump earns it's keep in this one. The Celestion G12H won in this case. Note * The G12H30 has been my longest running favorite Celestion followed closely by my current favorite Celestion the Creamback G12H-75. In the last comparison both the F25 and the Greenback sounded like great '60s classic rockers with the Fane F25 easily winning with the Telecaster but basically tying with the Celestion on the humbucker equipped instruments. I'd love to hear the F25 mounted in a Fender Tweed. To me the Fane F25 sounded more '50s American than '60s British. Lastly .... your comments on pairing brands resulting in something better reminded me of Paul Kossoff pairing a Marshall full stack with an Orange full stack and the guitar tone he provided to "Free". Sometimes the unexpected is the winner.
I found in nearly every case when heard alone I liked the slightly clearer top end of the Fanes, but every single time I liked the pair best of all. And although I just realized I might sound like I'm just going along with your findings,, I hpnestly came to my own conclusions and they came immediately, Paired together was 3d magic!
Great video as always Joe - you always seem to do the comparisons and experiments that I spend a lot of time thinking about but never actually doing them myself! I liked the Fanes better every time. I think when I get around to getting my '64 AC30TB restored I'm gonna be putting A30s in it rather than celestion alnicos...
I really wanted an A30 for my Fender Custom Deluxe Reverb, but being in Canada was unable to get one without spending an absolute premium in import fees etc. I picked up an Alnico Gold, as I am very familiar with this speaker and it is one of my favorites. That is now in my Fender Combo now and I am very happy with it. If I can find a Fane A30 I will absolutely pick it up as I prefer it's top end for lower wattage amps.
Great comparison! I am looking to see if a Fane F25 would improve the tightness of the bottom end, that the stock G12M25 lacks, on my Z Wreck Jr., and the extra top end will help it to cut through the bands mix also.
If they'd like to lend me some, I'd gladly try them out! But I'm much more of a British guy when it comes to amps & speakers, so probably won't be buying too many myself! I have tried a couple before though - there are demos on this channel somewhere!
How would you say the F25 compares to the much more common 25W Chinese Greenback? I just recently got a Vox AC15C1 that might be a good candidate; I love Fanes and generally prefer ceramic speakers over alnico. In this video I definitely prefer the F25 to the Greenback as it's way more clear, balanced, and articulate, but the 25W Chinese Greenbacks do sound quite different than these 20W UK Heritage versions. Love all your videos and Fane content btw; you inspired me to get a pair of F70's for my Hiwatt clone, and now they're my favorite speakers of all time!
I've not compared the F25 to the Chinese G'Back directly - but the Heritage GB was a fair bit thicker and less fizzy than the Chinese. So if I were to _guess_ I'd say the F25 would be similar in comparison: thicker and less fizzy than the Chinese GB, which would be a lot more nasal but a bit darker up top. But that's a guess without doing a direct comparison! Really glad you're into the Fane speakers...they're killer things! 🙂
i have a 1975 ac 30 (dallas arbiter, no rectifier tube, september 75 celstions.. ) - never could get a u2 ish chime out of it. maybe the A 30 could help....
Personally I'd go for the Alnico - but both would work well; depends if you're wanting a more classic chime sound, or a more punchy mid-focussed sound. 🙂
Couldn't agree more! I respect that they tried something different, but it sounds _very_ different to what most people will gravitate towards Alnico speakers for.

Thanks Johan...big fan of your channel! :-)

Amazing to hear!! Yep, the A30 is one of my all-time favourites - it's now in my main demo cab paired with the Gold, and it sounds wonderful!!
Alot of work went into this vid. Thanks Joe
Speaker comparisons are some of the most interesting, most watched videos....but they are _such_ a pain to make!! 😂
Really enjoyed this video, as always, Joe. Thanks again for all the entertainment you've provided during 2022.
Thanks Steve - much appreciated! :-)
This is AWESOME work! Well done Joe!
Incredibly helpful. Thanks for making solid shootouts
Well done. I too am a devotee of Fane transducers. The Fanes in this demonstration had better note separation, without losing body, or bite.
Brilliant work again! But please do one with the gold, the cream alnico and the A30 and A60 😊

Love the A60/30 best speaker I played :)

Glad it was a useful video! The A30 is _such_ an amazing speaker - I'm using it full-time paired with the Gold now!
I feel like the A30 and Celestion Greenback 25 would work great together.

As a fellow canuck, you can probably get Fanes cheaper through Avatar than you can directly from Fane. Cheers.
Great comparison, I very much enjoy your videos, thanks!

Let's hear some Jensens! Thanks these videos are so helpful tryin to decide what to buy.

F25 may be my choice for a future 1x12 cab. It is pretty much the sound of rock.
Absolutely is!!
Top 3 for me: Alnico Goldback is my favourite, followed by A30, then F30.
I'd like to hear the A60 vs A30 ? And the F70 vs F30.
You can hear them all side by side here :-) th-cam.com/video/BBh--plPOvo/w-d-xo.html

Hey, Joe will a Fane F25 work well in a Cornell Romany 12? Or do you suggest an A30 Alnico??
Personally I'd go for the Alnico - but both would work well; depends if you're wanting a more classic chime sound, or a more punchy mid-focussed sound. 🙂
Fane (fane) makes a man take things over
Fane (fane) lets him lose hard to swallow
Fane (fane) puts you there where things are hollow
Fane (fane)
Aha epic!
I wish there was a Celestion G12M at 100dB.
The A30 sounds like what the Celestion Ruby should have sounded like.
Couldn't agree more! I respect that they tried something different, but it sounds _very_ different to what most people will gravitate towards Alnico speakers for.
How is the A30 compared to the A60?
You can hear both together in this vid: th-cam.com/video/BBh--plPOvo/w-d-xo.html
(But the A30 is brighter and 'bitier')
@Joe Perkins thanks Joe! Happy new year!
Gold and a30 are very similar!!!
I had to watch this in mirror cuz lefty guitars give me nightmares.. 🎸😮😆🤘🏼✌🏼
Fane olitered the Celestion speakers.
Preferred the Celestion in each iteration. Give me warmth and girth over clarity every time.
